Since Ryan and Kylington both passed through waivers, they have no value. Ryan likely has negative value.
So you likely need to give up some actual value.

As fun as it is to believe that when someone like, say, James Neal clears waivers, that's not what that means.
Alex Galechenyuk is a recent example.

Galechenyuk was not picked up on waivers but was moved when someone had to take two unwanted contracts in return.
A guy like Ryan has too much cap attached to be taken without cap going back in return. The new cap world under COVID.

I wish that NHL writers would pick up on the way MLB writers discuss a trade concerning propects, and add a rating for context. Even just saying that the NHL.com rating for Korshkov was #10 in the Leafs system and Warsofsky was #22 would mean a lot more than just listing them.
By the way, NHL.com is a horrible example. Maybe the Athletic or something comparable to Baseball America.

I was on the fence about a Hall signing last year.
But he takes a 1-year deal to sign with the Sabres.
I have no need for 30 year old Taylor Hall for 7+ years at this point.
If he’d signed with the Bruins or Vegas, that’d be one thing.
The Sabres.
Someone else can have him. He’s Slender Phil Kessel at this point. You can’t commit to players like that.

Well, only kinda. He played with Nick Bonino and Carl Hagelin for both those wins. Remember the HBK line?

Technically, he played with Nick Bonino for one of them and yet led that team in playoff scoring.

Matchups matter. There's no Crosby and Malkin for a Taylor Hall to feast behind on the Calgary Flames.
If people want to use Phil Kessel on the Penguins as a potential analog for Hall on the Flames then I just don't know what to say.

Well first of all they aren’t similar players at all in terms of commitment and two way play. Not like Hall is Backlund or anything. But Kessel is not a Hall comparison.

Hey, I wasn't the one who compared Hall to Kessel. I think Hall is a lot better at driving play on his own.

Yeah sorry, just used your post as a springboard.
Hall also puts up twice the hits, blocks, and takeaways.

I think Hall would be a very nice fit on the Gaudreau-Monahan line. A lot better than Bennett, Simon, Leivo etc.
A Bennett+ package would be pretty decent for Buffalo who basically gets to test drive Bennett for a free agent they signed in the offseason. Flames likely need to add a 1st which would be a steal for the Sabres when looking at it from an asset standpoint.

As someone else mentioned, a waiver cleared Galchenyuk actually has a little more value because he can be assigned directly to the taxi squad without fear of losing him.

Well, in the deal being discussed, a lot of cap goes the other way.

This is just not true. Players who pass through waivers are not claimed for a variety of reasons unrelated to their trade value. I am pretty sure that closer to the TD a player like Ryan would interest some teams as a depth acquisition in exchange for a low pick.

Just for fun, let's say
Granlund would be useful on the 2nd powerplay unit.
Haula is a good faceoff guy.
Ekholm was on Backlund's 2018 Team Sweden World Championship Team.
8.3 million out (Bennett, Hanifin, Kylington) and 9.25 coming in.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Dubé
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Granlund
Lucic - Backlund - Mangiapane
Nordström - Haula - Leivo
Ryan/Simon
Giordano - Välimäki
Ekholm - Andersson
Mackey - Tanev
Nesterov
Markström
Rittich
