So what leg does Sam have to stand on? A 12 point player asking for a trade. That's exactly why the malcontent is still on this team.
I realize playoff games are not worth as much as all important regular season points, but they had the same number of points if you include playoffs.

Honestly, I'm surprised nobody's concerned on this forum about Marky being overworked. Can anyone on here provide a logical argument over why he must be overworked? Doesn't make sense to me.

I feel bad for BSD. That's all.

I think it’s pretty obvious that when you remove emotion from it our team just isn’t playing well enough to win these close games without Markstrom

I'm going to guess players would get a lot more points playing with Sidney Crosby than playing with Tobias Reider.

Maybe I'm just crazy though.

It looks good on paper, but if you get into a special teams game you end up with some pretty strange utilization.

I could be wrong though ...

Assuming I'm right, then you have to go back to the top nine again, and that's where it gets sticky.

Lindholm, Tkachuk, Monahan, Gaudreau, Backlund, Mangiapane all have to be there ... that's 6

Dube, Lucic and Bennett are my next three if you can find a way to get them onto the the three lines and I think that's the challenge.

Tkachuk - Lindholm - X
Gaudreau - Monahan - X
Lucic - Backlund - Mangiapane

I'm all for trying Bennett with Tkachuk and Lindholm, I didn't like Dube there.

Then you have a fourth line that hopefully can all kill penalties. Nordstrom is already doing it, can Simon?

And Leivo is the forgotten man in this case (he's been a healthy scratch any way).
I don't know at 5v5 teams average about 44-48 minutes per game and really we've rolled 4 lines all of the last two seasons when Ryan has been healthy, so it's nothing new.

So far this year the Flames have averaged ~46 minutes at 5V5, with the top three centers playing:

Lindholm is playing 13:22 TOI/GP
Monahan is playing 12:50 TOI/GP
Backlund is playing 11:53 TOI/GP

Thats about 38 minutes of TOI between those three, which leaves 8 minutes for the 4th line.

So really if you want to balance it out that means one fewer shift per game for each of Lindholm, Monahan, Backlund to give the Bennett line more time.

Lindholm: 12:30 TOI/GP
Monahan: 12:00 TOI/GP
Backlund: 11:30 TOI/GP
Bennett: 10:00 TOI/GP

That's 46 minutes of TOI at 5v5 per game distributed between the four lines. As I mentioned it's one fewer shift through the rotation for Lindholm, Monahan, and Backlund on average vs what they are playing today.

And with this roster set up it's pretty easy to see how you could shorten the bench in the third when you need a goal.

You start with:

Tkachuk-Lindholm-?
Gaudreau-Monahan-?
Mangiapane - Lindholm - ?
Lucic- Bennett - Dube

Then if you want to get the top 9 more time you can shorten the bench and go with:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Mangiapane
Lucic - Bennett - Dube

And the three ?'s sit on the bench in the third.

I guess the Penguins better trade for Bennett ASAP then!

More like Sam Bennett would last no more than 1.5 games with Crosby before being dumped on Jankowskis wing.

How awesomely ironic would that be?

This was the dream articulated by Scottish-Canadian engineer Sandford Fleming and officially adopted by diplomats at the 1884 Prime Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C.: a world divided into 24 zones, each with a single mean time determined by astronomers at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

Sportsnet decided that so it allows for a complete doubleheader.

Nope

Nordstrom is 20th in xGA/60 shorthanded for NHL forwards (18 minutes or more to start the season, a good split to get four per team) at 4.74/60

Mangiapane is coming on though ... 31st at 4.99

Lindholm is 39th
Ryan is 40th

All good options if Ryan wasn't hurt.

Big gap down to Backlund 107th (8/60)

So if everyone was healthy you'd be switching out Nordstrom for Backlund but those numbers aren't pretty (almost double the impact allowed). Not an option with Ryan hurt anyway.

Luckily Froese has been excellent through four games as well but an even smaller sample size.

Well, playoff production counts for virtually nothing right now.

This xGF stuff and xGA stuff in small sample sizes is nothing to get hung up on

Hockey games are won and lost by counting actual goals

Fact is that Simon and Bennett both have been on the ice for 3 goals and 1 against with 13 and 23. Bennett scored two of his. Both ~50 mins +/- 10%. Simon hasn’t registered a point. I recall him provided him some decent traffic in front

Bennett played all of 9 minutes with Looch and Dube and it was an impact line with 2 GF and 0 GA

In 110 minutes, Lindholm Tkachuk and Dube have 5 GF 2 GA and CF of 46.6%. Okay but hardly dazzling

The reality is that the team has not played great 5 on 5, got a bunch of early season points from rock solid goaltending and an effective PP

I get the suggestions of 3 pairs plus the Bennett line, I also get the idea of putting your top 9 players in the top 9.

I don’t get the idea of Bennett as line 4 wing, unless Backlund is unlikely to go and it was just to see how he felt

Whatever.

Looking forward to a good game and big win. Johnny is going to hit that short angle shot over Holtby tonight.

GFG!
