Agreed. I have concerns with Ward but hope that it's just a new coach thing and he is ironing out all the kinks in this first quarter of the season then the team goes on a heater heading into the playoffs.

Sure. It's not trollish if you genuinely don't understand why Flames fans on a Flames-centric message board would watch a Flames game, but that's some hell of a "different opinion."
Watching Flames games is literally the most basic part of being a fan. And you genuinely don't understand it?
Now you're just being silly.

Well, I thought that game was great. The Flames are playing against a desperate Canucks team right now. So anyone expecting the Flames to just roll over the Canucks is out of touch. The Flames walked away with Ws in 2 of 3 games and are 8-6-1 on the season. The Flames really suffered from losses in a few close games they should've won. If the Flames were 10-4-1, we'd all be jumping up and down.
The Flames looked half asleep in game 2 against the Canucks. They've also suffered from a horrible schedule, with huge breaks followed by a bunch games all crammed together. That will even out over the season.
The Flames have iced a much more complete team than they have in a long while. The keys to their success will be increased depth scoring from Tkachuk and the defence. If the Flames can find a way to get Valimaki, Hanifin, Giordano, and Tkachuk contributing higher quality offence, they will be a very solid team.
A lot of people here are really exaggerating how close this team is to being successful.

Markstrom looked ANGRY at times tonite and THAT needs to be addressed A Phucking SAP.
If this team won't play better in front of Markstrom they better God dwmned well defend him because if he gets injured were forked.
Already he's been subjected to so many shots....the team has abandoned him.
We're talking about a League MVP consideration, Vezina candidate FFS.
Time to wake up. Edward's and Co.....time for a sports Psychologist, new coach.....HELL....please just put Gelinas in as coach, Conny as asst Gm and coach.

Not a great game, but the second period and back half of the first was good. Still annoying to give up a shorty to tie the game...I don't like any team that's as bad as this one is at letting teams with an empty net score on you...while you can't score on the empty net.
I think the whole Canadian Division really is a collection of 6 teams who would be between the 14 to 22nd best teams in the entire league...plus Ottawa.
Toronto is off to a hot start, but who know's if they'll keep it up. Montreal is a bit like the Flames in that they have depth, but I think they have even less high end scoring than the Flames do. Winnipeg at this point is one game better than Calgary so the two teams are pretty close. Edmonton has high end scoring and lacks everything else. Vancouver at this point is in a pretty bad hole that climbing out is going to be pretty tough as they also lack useful depth. I actually expect now that they're pretty much dead that Ottawa will probably be play close to 500 now since they have no pressure and all their opponents do.
This is probably a bad year to be in line to get a good draft pick because there is a lack of data on the draft eligible players this year. If they were not willing to tear things down in the summer and chart a new course...than they might as well empty every bullet they have trying to make this group work. The one thing they have in their favor is that they only have three contracts after this year that have more than two years of term for guys over 30, and they might drop one in the expansion draft. All three of Tanev, Markstrom, and Backlund are still useful players, and Markstrom for me would still rate as a top performer in his position group. So cap wise the team has a lot of future flexibility. What they don't want to do is hand out some bad deals to current core guys that drag on for another 5-6 years at painful numbers...like say San Jose.

I think Toronto would be a top 10 team if it was a regular season. I hate the Leafs as much as anyone but they have solid overall talent from the net out. Montreal would probably in the late teens and IMO Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa would all be in the 20's. It's a collection of really mediocre teams with a single really good team. This new division setup is actually advantageous for most of the Canadian teams as four are going to make it in a year where probably one or two Canadian teams make it in a regular scheduled season.

This entire post is such nonsense. The Flames rank THIRD in the Division in shots allowed, and that is after having played the highest percentage of road games of all the Canadian teams. On home ice they have a +11 shot-differential in six games.

The issue, that even players have commented on, is the wild swings in their play (Lucic's Jekyll and Hyde comment). Of course, no team will win every game. Of course, some opponents will be desperate but I think people want to CGY to be aggressive - and if they lose, they go down swinging.
For me, I want to see aggressive play (disciplined and within the rules). I want to see them skating hard and competing. I don't like seeing 1-5 shot periods because that is indicative of passive play and just taking it from the opponent - You would like to see push back, some we're not going to get rolled over mentality.
I think in 13-14 CGY lost a lot of games but they gave it everything and fans were proud of their effort. 3hrs every game day just lay it all out (like it really means something to you) and let the chips fall where they may.
No one cares more about it than the players and coaches but when CGY shows what they can do, what effort/aggressivness/compete level they can put out there that's what one wants to see.

I think that had more to do with people being happy Feaster was gone, and that the Sutter years were pretty much done with. That team did play pretty hard most nights but no one expected them to be anything but the worst team in the league.
This team has a bit more talent, but they do seem to have that Gulutzen'esque hold back. They seem to hold back and think too much about where they should be or what they should be doing, rather than instinctively know it and execute it. Those years yielded 0 playoff wins...we'll see if Ward can improve on the two real playoff wins he has.

Win was great, especially to come from behind.
However, my eyes saw a lot of the game where the Flames were blocked in their own end not being able to get out. Can anyone provide a breakdown of how much time we spent in the Canucks end compared to our own end?
Outside of a few timely breaks where we scored, like with Lindholm, I never saw much concentrated and sustained pressure by the Flames in the Canucks end. Lucic's shift was great but I never saw enough of that.

I think this is all fans can ask for. That is the real product. You build a team and develop talent and teams have an arc they're on. But this is the minimum fans want for buying tickets, buying merchandise, for buying in etc.
The DNA in 14-15 was hard work. That should be a permanent part of the identity. Management talks about what they look for in drafting etc and compete is high on the list. High IQ, skill, compete, character, hard work. Those last 3 should not be mercurial- streaky. Put that on display every game and make the statement "This is what we're about."

Some people get entertainment from being an armchair gm. It's a little like day dreaming about winning the lottery. It's fun to imagine yourself in exceptional positions.
As long as you are not making yourself unhappy by stressing over things you are not in control of it's totally harmless.

Have you watched the last 3 games? The Flames are lucky to have won 2/3 and have been outplayed by a large margin for the majority of each game. They are barely outperforming what was supposedly a doormat team on the verge of complete implosion coming into the series.
At this point this team cannot even afford to play Rittich tomorrow night as the only margin they have is all pro level goaltending coming from Markstrom.

Right, and going into a GT to tell people they are stupid for watching the game is the former.

Heck I put $20 on the Flames to win at 1.76-1, so winning $35.20 made me extra happy on top of the Flames' win.
Winning is better than losing. Always.

Also wanted to mentioned that Flames have been doing a good job on Petterson. Through 5 games, they have held him to a couple of assists.

Something is off with him overall this season.
13 points in 18 games which isn't bad but he just isn't as dynamic or dangerous.

Each and every one, and I would not say the Flames were "lucky" to have won the two they did. I think the last three games have featured an utterly disparate team playing on home ice against a team still finding their footing while stuck in the same hotel room for four straight days, and playing without their #2 centre for two of the three.
Think about it like this: The Flames destroyed the Canucks on home ice, and also managed to walk away with 4/6 points in Vancouver against a team that was playing to save their season.

Surely you have been watching this game long enough to know that any team can win on any night. The worst team in the Division erased a FIVE GOAL deficit to beat the top team yesterday. The Canucks were not going to lose every game this year, and with their backs against the wall it should come as no surprise that they played the games of their lives over the course of the past week. The Canucks are so bad that although playing at their absolute, desperate best, they cannot even manage to eke out better than three points on home ice.
