Winning the Cup is not the measuring stick I should be using to judge success, hmmm. No wonder I've been so disappointed for the least 3 decades. Been doing it all wrong.

If winning a Cup is your measure, then you will live a life of disappointment. There are still eleven teams who have never done so. For all the frustration in Calgary, Philadelphia and Toronto have not won in more than forty years.
Yes. You have been doing it wrong.

Weird comparison. People are looking at more than one game or one season.

If winning the cup isn’t your measure of success, what the heck is?

A competitive team with the chance to win. The best team in the League doesn't always win a Championship. That requires an enormous amount of good fortune on top of everything else.

The best “teams” are definitely the teams winning cups. The teams that may have better players on paper but not win in the playoffs, weren’t the best team. They may be perceived as having the best individuals but they didn’t come together as a team. So, they weren’t the best.

Many of the best teams never win, and very often through no fault of their own.

SJ has the second most wins since 2000. Successful or not? Washington didn’t win a cup until 3 years ago, but I figure it was a successful team before then.

In my eyes no. Success to winning franchises means the cup and only the cup. When thats the goal, their may be some lean years but you don't go 30+ years without winning one. The Flames are the definition of mediocrity, from top to bottom.

It's funny how San Jose has been so successful when it comes to the regular season but never won the Cup.
Then L.A. wins two in three years without finishing higher than 3rd in their division.
I recall Daryll Sutter had a strategy where he said he divided the regular season into blocks of 7 games, and the goal was to always win at least 4 of the 7, as a way to prepare for the playoff mentality. You don't need to dominate, but you need to be able to raise your level when the pressure is on.
I am not sure if he passed that psychological technique on to the players, but it sure worked for him as a coach.

The only funny thing is that after watching that happen the Canucks went and made the EXACT SAME MISTAKE.
Stupid Canucks learning from the Stupid Flames.

Except that the Canucks thought they could rebuild even better than the Flames by signing a whole bunch of aging vets to overpriced deals. Now they're so cap-strapped that they've crippled their rebuild.
Eriksson (6m), Sutter (4.4m), Roussel (3m), Beagle (3m), Myers (6m).

Well, by that definition, then they are in good company along with most of the rest of the NHL.

So I guess the franchise should be content since what they are doing is similar to the rest of the league? That type of mentality is exactly why the Flames are where they are and have been for so long.
Forget the cup (even though that should be the only goal), list me the teams that have made it past the first round less times than the Flames in the last 30+ years? If you don't see a problem with how this organization operates, good on you.

I was going to sarcastically say what about the recent expansion teams. But the Golden Knights have been out of the first round the same amount of times in their 3 year history as us in the last 30, with more series wins.
