They could use some skill though. No one else is really working out on that line. If Backlund is out that means Bennett is most likely playing center on the 3rd line. If Backlund isn't going to miss many or any games, then I wouldn't bother with Galchenyuk. If he is then Galchenyuk is an improvement from Simon or Leivo offensively.

If Backs is out for any length of time Galchenyuk could be claimed. His salary is negligible and he can play games. All in all, zero risk, minimal reward potential though, the guy has flat out fallen off a cliff. Likely due to confidence.

I dont know, it's not a crazy desire I have to see the Flames claim him, but he could be someone they look at.

Worst case he doesn't pan out and goes on waivers. Ez peazy.

A big pass, that won't help the Flames its more of what they already have (i.e. soft forwards who are very inconsistent).

Flames need to generate a trade and move a forward from their core.

However it won't happen during the season.

It should of happened last off-season.

And he’s 31 now. That was a hell of a contract.

If Backlund is out for a bit, I'd pick up Galchenyuk. He can step right in since he won't need quarantine. He still has some skill and has shown to be a 20/30 goal scorer before. Maybe something clicks here as unlikely as that is.

I’m actually up for this. He’s as likely to fit in as any other current spare part.

This is a super low risk play for the Flames.

I believe this only works if Backlund is on LTIR, correct? I would think that if he is going to be out for significant time we would have known by now. It has been oddly quiet.

With Ryan being on LTIR for at least 2 more weeks, it would give Treliving some time to sort out the cap issues.

I believe they have a skate scheduled for today at 3:30pm MT and it's expected we'll know more at that time if Backlund is out there or not.

Claiming Galchenyuk does make sense if Backlund is expected to miss enough to go on LTIR. If he comes in and fits in well, they'll have to make some decisions once Backlund and Ryan are healthy. It would also open the door to trading Bennett without bringing back a roster player. If he doesn't fit in, they can put him back on waivers and let Carolina have him.

Since he's in Canada and cleared quarantine, they wouldn't need to wait 2 weeks for him to play like they would with a trade.

I am not so sure Carolina would claim Galchenyuk back. Keeping him in Canada to avoid a potential 14 day quarantine suggests they want another team to claim him by making it more attractive for a Canadian team to put in a claim.

I actually like Galchenyuk. He could be a good addition. It is a shame that he has had a couple crappy seasons but if he can return to the level he was at with Montreal he could be a good addition.

I just look at it as the ultimate low risk move, especially with injuries.

And he's got a great pp one-timer from the RW

As a third line player I'd give Galchenyuk a go (salary I have no idea what his hit would be worth). He's better than some of the many guys we have pushing for the role.

I don’t care how long Backlund is out for , Galchenyuk is not the answer. This guy won’t be in the NHL next year. Rather keep Bennett at 3rd line center and call up a youngster. Granted it doesn’t sound like Backlund will be out for long.
