You sign possibly the worst contract in the league, manage to trade it away, and still #### it up.

You never go full Oiler!

James Neal is no good.

The Edmonton Oilers are no good.

best part of this was remembering how Oiler fans were crowing about Neal last year

Not a fan of Lucic's contract, but he's a team first guy that will work even if he isn't scoring or being featured

Some Oilers fan said in the comments of the Sportsnet article that this proves that the Oilers have more depth than the Flames and that Lucic must be one of the Flames’ better players. lol, ok.

Sportsnet comments are a complete cancer.

Nah, the best part of this was that Neal put up enough meaningless October goals to send the Flames a third round pick, and then completely dogged it. It was the worst possible outcome for the Oilers.

Which of course makes it extra delicious!

Who had that stat? It was like since February last year Lucic has 28 points to Neals 17 or something

This is probably a better way to look at it:

James Neal has 37 points as an Oiler.
Milan Lucic has 32 points as a Flame.

However. When Lucic scored his first point as a Flame... Neal already had 10 in Edmonton.

Let’s see how good their depth performs without McDavid and Leon

Since 1 Jan 2020:

James Neal: 4G 8 pts
Milan Lucic: 9G 25 pts

Neal buyout next summer is...

$1,916,667 For 4 years (until 2024/25) on top of paying Lucic $750,000 until 2022/23.

If the Flames bough out Neal in 2019 they would have that $1.916 cap hit until 2026/27.

Draisatl’s deal is up after 2024/25 and McDavid has one more year on his contact.

They are paying over $4.5 million for no one to play for them this year on the cap.

Next year it won’t really change if they buy Neal out.

I remember Stauffer yammering on about how buying out Sekera made sense for cap flexibility after the new US tv deal to jump up the cap.

Welp... whatever the cap goes up by... they pretty much blew it on Neal.

And the worst part is: paying $1.9M for 4 years plus $750k for 2 years to have Neal off the team, is WAY better than paying $6.5M for 2 more years to keep him around

As a person that despised the trade I now have to admit that Lucic is the more serviceable player at this time in their careers.
