The Flames will, when the alternative is to set him free.

I doubt he just gets the 1 year qualifier. I think the Flames will negotiate a long-term extension at less than $9M AAV.

I think he takes the one year qualifier to set himself up for much better leverage after that. I doubt he lets the Flames buy out a number of UFA years unless the price is outrageous.

His dad is his agent isn’t he. Have to say he did an awesome job negotiating his own deals to maximize max $ so I’m thinking tre will be challenged a bit on next contract

Tkachuk should not be traded. Period. Thank god you have no decision making authority. He is our future captain. Just stop.

People say this, but aside from being hyper-emotional at times, what says “captain” to you?

Tkachuk is way overrated on these boards. I don’t see a top line player when I watch him. In fact, if he’s your best player you’re in trouble. I like Tkachuk, however he’s not what he’s built up to be.

Does any one want to see us play Matthew on another club because of some gripes with how he's handled a bit of adversity? Or on another Canadian club?
I sure as hell don't.
Shut your damn traps and appreciate the fact that he's ours, because there are 30 other teams that would gladly take him and his problems on.
Talk about blowing #### out of proportion. He's not in any clique or group? How the #### would you know?

Don Meehan.
Likely the best agent in the game. Very fair to both his client and teams. Same guy repped Iginla among hundreds of others.

He hasn’t had the hottest start but he’s a top liner on most teams. He’s a 70-80 point player.
He also adds so many elements to the game that other 70-80 point players do not.
This forum is way to quick to like and then dislike players. He’s been the best Flames player for 3 years with the most heart.

Yeah its amazing.
Guy is experiencing a 2 week downturn/adversity in his game after 4 solid to spectacular seasons at age 23....and people are down on him. Trade him? Jeezuz christ.
People suck.

Not sure he was ever overrated.
I only ever remember him being referred to as a bold young up and comer, but never as a very good GM in any analysis.

If he drops the ball offensively because of Doughty/Muzzin type incidents getting in his head then that will just make him more affordable come negotiation time. I'll take that any day considering he will get over it at some point and will be great in the big picture.

Agreed.
All this future captain BS smacks of Oilerism. Honestly, he's a great player and an emotional force on a team that needs some emotion, but I prefer my Captains not be pre-ordained or anointed.
Let's let him earn it the old-fashioned way.

Would you pay him $9M for what he brings to the table?

Meh, super fun opinion to have when he's slumping. Most people are able to look past that and see the whole body of work which shows pretty definitively that he is in fact a beast.
The statement of "if he's your best player, you're in trouble" is also meaningless without context. What if he's one of 4 players hovering around the ppg mark, all with different skill sets? What if beyond that you have one of the best third line centres in the league and another winger that is dominating the league in terms of play driving? What if your D is rock solid 1-6 and you currently are sporting one of the top defensive pairs in the league? What if your actual best player is your vezina candidate goalie? Are you in trouble? Nope

Tkachuk is a fantastic player. Highly intelligent - like top of the charts intelligent, highly skilled - I think he's probably second behind Gaudreau but it's very close with other players. He is also a passionate player. If people say this disqualifies him from being captain, I think that is silly. He's a young guy and although highly advanced in terms of maturity - like most NHL players, he is going to continue to mature. Unquestionably a top line player.
He's also a confident guy and I think that rubs off on team mates. I think other players would follow him so why not captain material?
There are other good options on the team and I think people disqualify certain guys because they have their own favourites. It's kind a silly debate as they are all good options and that's a good thing to have. Probably speaks to qualities the teams looks for when adding players to the team.
It's so funny how people are so reactionary to ebbs and flows as if one day a player is good and the next they totally suck and don't belong in the league. Literally no ability to put things in perspective just react like a cat chasing a light. Imagine trying to run a team or business if decision makers are so erratic.

Let me be clear - I like Chucky a lot. He brings certain elements that no one else does and he’s very talented. When he’s on he’s a game changer. But I also hear from some insiders that he’s not exactly respected around the league (whereas Gio is). And he certainly doesn’t have officials’ ear, which is part of being captain.
All that said, I’ve always been of the view that the players should choose captains (subject to a veto by the coaching staff which should be cautiously exercised). So the question is whether the team thinks he’s a leader or not. So that’s why I ask the question. What demonstrates that he’s a leader on the team? Aside from, say, Backlund, or if you want to go younger, Monahan or Rasmus?
