Man Markstrom is just legit back there. I’ll admit I didn’t realize how good he was. Just so calm and in control. Sure is nice having him back there.

I’ll echo the thoughts on Gio. Easily his best game of the season. Great to see and hopefully a sign of things to come. Thought Mangiapane had a real slow start to the season, but he’s been just money the last 5-6 games. What a great player he’s becoming. Got an edge to him too which I love.

What’s up with Tkachuk? His whole season has been pretty underwhelming, but especially since the Muzzin incident. Not skating, just reaching on plays, lack of any second effort. I’m sure he’ll turn it around, but man something seems off. A bit concerning to say the least.

Yeah - Really enjoy the assistant coaches (especially Huska) comments. Just a whole lot better than regular commentary and Ward answering the media's questions (I like Ward - they should just ask him how he saw the game at the beginning and let a coach break it down).

The only ways in which Mangiapane and Bennett are at all comparable as players are in terms of handedness and age.

Mangiapane honestly could be looked at as a potential Selke candidate with how he's currently driving play, and no, I'm not joking.

Good to get the win. Not the greatest performance in the first 2 periods.

Markstrom, mangiapane stuck out as strong performers.

Tkachuk continues looking like hot garbage. One of the flames more useless forwards all season.

This isn't a knock on Ward because the team is rolling, but I'm ready to see them try:

Gaudreau Monahan Lindholm
Mangiapane Backlund Tkachuk
Lucic Bennett Dube
Simin/Nordstrom Froese Leivo

Tkachuk is struggling away from Backlund, Gaudreau/Monahan looking much better this season, Dube is getting low minutes.

Other than Lucic, I think this keeps guys who are succeeding in good spots and puts those struggling in better spots. Maybe Lindholm is an exception too but he might fill the net with Gaudreau and Monahan.

It's honestly hilarious to me how incredibly underrated Mangiapane continues to be by some fans.

The guy is out of this world defensively and produces at a first line rate at 5v5, yet some people only think he's "decent" value at his current contract.

Some people don't see talent even when they're witnessing it every other day. Rather, they focus on the names and draft position.

"Mangiapane? Yea, for a 6th round pick he's pretty good. Maybe a 2nd liner but probably a 3rd on a good team"

Like come on, there's a legit argument to be made that Mangiapane is a top 3 forward on the Flames at 5v5, if not the best. You really couldn't ask for a much better player at even strength.

The moment the Flames are able to negotiate with Mabgiapane next year, they need to get to work on locking him up long term.

Mangiapane is driving elite advanced metrics right now and has since the start of last year.

He’s easily been the best play driver on the Flames going back to the start of last season and whatever line he is on immediately sees a bump.

And he’s producing consistently too.

Since the start of last season he’s producing at 2.06 points per 60 at 5v5, that’s first on the team. Better than Gaudreau, better than Tkachuk, better than everyone. That also ranks him 74th in the NHL during this time.

Sam Bennett produces at 1.07 P/60 at 5v5 in that same time, so no it’s not that close.

He’s a legitimate 200ft player who makes his linemates better, and if he was getting PP1 ice time his production would probably look a lot more impressive.

People around the NHL are starting to notice too https://twitter.com/hockeystatscz/st...756704256?s=21

https://twitter.com/hbfanalytics/sta...656174085?s=21

According to those guys he’s the best play driver in the ENTIRE NHL this season so far.

Gio's post game comments are always so good.
He's very analytical, honest and methodical his breakdown factoring things we don't grasp from tv ie context. I was like oh they look asleep in the first but Gio explains why things unfold a certain way.

The Canucks drafted Juolevi which allowed us to draft Matthew Tkachuk.

The Canucks traded us a draft pick for Sven Baertschi which allowed us to draft Rasmus Andersson.

The Canucks let their MVP goaltender walk to free agency which allowed us to sign Jacob Markstrom.

The Canucks let Chris Tanev walk and replaced him with Travis Hamonic.

Jim Benning has done an excellent job building the Calgary Flames.

Mangiapane scored his first NHL goal on February 19, 2019. Since then, he has 27 goals and 48 points in 108 games.

Bennett has 11 goals and 18 points in the 78 games he's played since that same date.

When Mangiapane is on the ice, the Flames get 58.76% of all shot attempts at even strength. Among players with at least 100 minutes this year, that's 29th in the league and the best on the Flames by a decent amount.

Even better is the Flames' expected goals percentage when Mangiapane is on the ice at even strength: 68.30%, third in the entire NHL. By far the best on the Flames.

With Mangiapane on the ice, the Flames generate 16.5 high danger chances/60 and surrender just 7.29. His 69.35 high danger chance percentage is 13th in the entire NHL—once again, by far the best on the Flames.

When Mangiapane is on the ice, the Flames take offensive zone faceoffs 48.75% of the time. He's not being sheltered.

And his offense—which is already good—should be even better. The Flames are only shooting 6.19% with Mangiapane on the ice. Only Josh Leivo has a lower on-ice shooting percentage for the Flames.

Backlund often makes guys better but right now, Mangiapane is making him better. Backlund goes from a 72.12 expected goals percentage playing with Mangiapane to 49.82% without.

I stand by it—he should be under consideration for the Selke.

It's difficult to tell from tv but when they pan to bench it sometimes looks very quiet (no fans detracts). Lucic mentioned the team really fed off Rinaldo's energy last year so why not have him behind the bench? I'm sure taxi squad issues but if atmosphere is lacking, use that guy - put him in a suit and get the boys pumped up.
