They wouldnt be dealing with Burke....Hextall is the GM and has full autonomy on all players moves not involving Letang, Malkin or of course Sid.
That being said, obviously Hextall would ask BB about Bennett, if they are interested at all, and would then establish what he would consider fair price.
Being that Zucker is there and BT seems to have an affinity for him...that would be one target but the Flames would have to add a bunch to get that done.

Didn't Zucker already kill a deal to Calgary? He still has a 10 team no trade list and I bet the Flames are on that.
I think Kapanen probably makes sense for both teams. Flames finally get a responsible, big and speedy two way winger for Johnny and Mony and the Penguins get to reunite Bennett with Jankowski!

A thousand times this.
Logo on the front over the name on the back.
Every single time.
If Bennett, or any player, wants out and/or can be improved upon, then thats what should happen.
Seems to me that many posters on this site feel its far more important to be in the corner of the player over the needs of the team and I really dont understand that.

The Flames couldn't acquire Zucker unless the add on included significant cap going the other way. Besides, I am nearly certain that the Flames are on Zuckeer's NTC. After it was revealed he was almost a Flame in 2019 I recall it was reported that he had Calgary added to his no-trade list at the first opportunity.

Is that what happened? I really dont recall exactly what that whole screw up was about.

I re-watched the game this morning to make sure I wasn't missing something and my gut feel after the game that the line was neutered was validated. Monahan's line generated almost nothing last night. The stats line shows Monahan with a shot and Gaudreau with two. Sam Bennett had one. Is that what you really call that a good night? I have much higher expectations for the line that was carrying this team out of the gate. I expect that type of shot generation each period, not for a full game. For comparison sake, the centers on the other lines each had more shots than the entire line Bennett was on. Not a good night IMO. This is not a line that is designed to just spend time cycling the puck, this is a line that should be scoring goals. Since Bennett has been put on the line Monahan and Gaudreau each have three shots on goal, over two games. This is a good trend? Bennett may be playing with a little more jump, but when it drags down you two best offensive players to where their production is minimal, that's a mistake.
|
While I think you make some good arguments that lines production needs to be looked at with some more context.
For example, given that Johnny and Monny were having such a strong start to the year I would imagine other teams have taken notice and started to put more focus on defending them.
Earlier in the year I’m sure Tkachuk and Lindholm were getting more attention.
I think the fact I noticed the line create 1-2 high danger chances is a good sign even if the volume isn’t as high as earlier in the year.
All I’m saying is I want to see more before I’m making my mind up about it but so far I have noticed some progression and chemistry building, most notably between Benny and Johnny.
You may very well be right and Sam isn’t going to work out in the long term but I would like to see it stick for a while so we can at least close the book on the Bennett not getting enough opportunity argument.

A lot of fans are sentimental. There is nothing wrong with loving the players on your team.
There is a lot wrong with a sentimental GM, but a fan wanting a team to succeed with players they love is about as wholesome as it gets.

Brandon Tanev is a good player though. He'd be a good fit with Johnny and Mony too.
Pens would have to add something given Bennett's upside and Tanev's contract.
It's not a sexy return for Bennett, but Flames would be getting a good player.

No. I believe that at the time the trade was made the Flames were not on Zucker's NT list. It was only afterwards in summer 2019 that he added them, which is a big part of why Treliving's focus was set so firmly on Kadri, who unfortunately also had the Flames in his own NTC.

I don't mind giving Bennett another few games but I do agree with your analysis. His dumb cross-check in the third period last night could have easily turned the game around with a different result. I also don't think the line has generated much since Bennett has been put on it - but then again, that line hasn't really done much 5-5 for about 2 years now.
The way I see it, if Gaudreau and Monahan's production drops more than the increase in Bennet's production - then it's not worth it. This is equivalent to thinking Zack Kassian was a top line player when playing with McDavid.

Every time I read this, it's a good perspective check - and a good reason why we shouldn't sour so harshly on our own players.
Calgary just isn't a desirable market. We are underdogs because we are the Calgary Flames.

Not just the players. Team management must execute their mandate with one arm tied behind their backs. It is all that much more difficult building a competitive team in Calgary than it is in LA or Boston.

Jesus tapdancing Christ this thread makes me nuts.
To the haters....keep on hating.
But know this.
#23 and #13 have NEVER thrown this team on their backs and did anything worthy of anything in the playoffs.
God what a piissssssing contest this has been reading every post and all the negative negative negative BS .
This team isn't a team until they buy in 100%
I don't GAF who the coach is....and Ward isn't the guy .
I don't have the answers either so the condemnation, criticism and complaints and bitter hatred makes this place so ugly .
FML this place needs an enema.
Dear God if you wake up every morning and have to come here and post more venom and vile hatred because your life sucks and you hate everything .....please do us all a favor and stick a gun in your pie hole and pull said trigger .
Wow ....so tired of the rainbows , sunshine, four leaf clovers and pretentiousness of armchair Gms , coaches and mismanagers on here with all the M F ing answers .
End rant....glad I got that off my chest .....now I can go back to being an a hole.

I think Bennett himself looks way better on the Monahan line. I'm not sure Johnny or Monahan look any better (or worse). So unless there's someone who can improve the line, he stays.
note - I'm certain Dube would improve it, but he is also doing well on the Lindholm line.

I dont think Dube And Gaudreau will play together. That said I would love to see Bennett and Tkachuk play together.
Gaudreau Monahan Mangiapane
Bennett Lindholm Tkachuk
Lucic Backlund Dube

I hate that the league allowed such liberal application of NMCs and NTCs. It makes it harder for smaller markets to acquire players, and occasionally handcuffs teams from moving players. I wish there was a limit on how many a team could have on their roster to make them think harder on who should get one.
It's like the league said, here's a CBA with salary and term limits that helps smaller markets be competitive, but let's add one wrinkle to remind everyone that smaller markets still suck.
I get that it was a trade off to get the players to accept other features of the CBA, but it still grinds my gears.

I think Dube is perfect for that line: He is a puck carrying option, so less reliance on Gaudreau. He digs the puck well. He's fast. Fairly physical. He is decent defensively (more than Bennett). He has a good shot. He can take draws. basically, he's a smaller LH Lindholm, and we saw how that worked. He gives you what Bennett does but with a little higher IQ and defence, and less wildness.

I would not change up the lines from the last two games. The other lines are balanced and have some chemistry going. I would like to see a better player than Bennett with Monahan and Gaudreau, but until a trade happens Bennett is likely the guy for that role. A guy I would like to seem them give and extended audition is Leivo, but that would take some time for experimentation that I don't think this team has. So Bennett is there by default because I wouldn't mess up the other lines to accommodate a single player. Let's see how this plays out, but I'd keep looking for a deal where there's a better fit with Monahan and Gaudreau (Jost?).

Yep this is it.
This also assumes you're a fan of hockey, and not just having your tribev be successful. If you enjoy the actual game, then you enjoy watching the players that play the game and develop an attachment to those on your team.
Team first? Of course. But the players aren't interchangeable, faceless machines. They are actually why we like the game.
