It's a lenox about ~5 years old. Not quite sure exactly which of all these numbers is the model number.

Not sure why you keep feeling it necessary to highlight youre intentionally defrauding a company. Just say you borrowed some space heaters and drive on. No one is impressed.

I don't think it's fraud. I can't tell you how many times I planned to "borrow" something from Canadian Tire and then was too lazy to return it. I think they know that, and that's why they have the policy in the first place.

Ducay- definitely not trying to brag or anything. As posted above, it was mentioned in the very first response. I'd gladly pay a restocking fee as it was well worth it, but I don't think that will be the case.
Anyways, the wife, baby and toddler were kept warm.

Anyways, quick update, from the time the repair guy booted it back up with the new pressure switch to the time I got home with the insulation, it had already crapped out again. He's swinging by one more time tonight to boot it up and to hopefully see if the insulation will do the trick. Wish us luck through the night!

From what you have said I would think your motor is fine. It should last 20 years and I believe you indicated furnace is around 5 years old. That it fires up and does run for at least a little bit before failing again makes me first want to check if your air intake is icing up. Old pressure switch may have been ok it was doing it’s job just like new switch. Put some heat from space heater on line coming into house from outside to pre-heat the air. If there are any metal screens (prevent mice from coming into house) or air filters you can access check these too as they could filling with ice as furnace runs. Put space heater on these areas too.
Hope this helps and the insulation you added does the trick.

Another thing is if you have a humidifier attached to furnace I would lower humidity level in this minus 30 weather. With problems you have been having don’t have it set any higher than 10% or shut it off altogether. Humidify your kids room with portable humidifier only. This humidity might be contributing to the icing.

You would think that would be the first thing the HVAC tech would check. (Air intake)
This happened to me 2 years ago during a minus 40 cold snap. Basically set up space heaters everywhere and it held heat until i got parts in. Mine was the Variable speed Motor cap.But before that it was one of the temp limit switches. So many electronics now on these High efficiency Furnaces.
Good luck!

Yes he should have checked it and hopefully he did. Depends how much experience this repair guy has. He can get focused on overthinking it and forget the simple stuff. Hopefully jroc and family are warm tonight and throughout the cold snap.

With so many stories I've heard of these new furnaces failing so fast I wish I could take my old one with me when I move.

I agree with Ducay that it's not a cool move at all to do this.
Canadian Tire will take them back because they DGAF. What happens is the supplier of the heaters to Canadian Tire will have to ship them back to their company - at their own expense - and eat the loss. Gone are the days where Canadian Tire will put some scotch tape on the box and sell it to the next guy...they just pass the loss onto the supplier.
It's very unethical...maybe consider keeping the heaters or selling them on Kijiji at a loss. Without a shred of doubt, you're deliberately screwing somebody over and taking food off their table by stealing time with their product then sticking them with costs over and above the cost of the actual unit (freight, administrative and warehousing costs) when you're done using it.

With the exception of new builds, every new furnace out there replaced an old one that failed.

Sure, but over a 40 year period, one has gotten 25+ years before starting the loop of regular repairs on a new.

That's not true. Plenty of perfectly fine furnaces are being replaced under this program.
https://energyexperts.ca/government-...e-energy-plan/
Even the company that serviced my furnace this fall was pushing it.

Not mine, my 50 year old one was still functioning just fine. But I replaced it back when we had mega rebates. My friend replaced his working one when he added A/C, as the furnace was 30 years old and it made sense to do it then. So it happens.

Screw you guys!
Okay, fine. Some furnaces are replaced before they fail. I stand corrected.

Fair enough.
I've spent several years in retail. Are you saying they don't take the return, turn around, and sell it as an 'open box' item anymore?

Come on. The guys kids were freezing. It's not unethical to buy and return something in those circumstances. It's not like he's running a side hustle buying and returning space heaters. If he is, then you have a point.
I think Canadian Tire has some wiggle room in their margins when they are consistently able to sell stuff at 75% off. Or do you voluntarily pay full price for socket wrenches because of tHe SuPpLiErsS
