You need players like Backlund to win.
Look at any winning team, they have defensive stalwarts like Backlund.

So, who gets protected with the #7 forward slot?
Tkachuk
Lindholm
Monahan
Gaudreau
Dube
Mangiapane
The only way that both are exposed is if Lucic chooses not to waive his NMC. That happening is a bad thing.

He has had 10 plus years to win here but no success.
Time to move on.

This seems like a silly thing to say aiming to minimize Backlunds contribution. You can't just point to a game in the season where a player did very well and say their success was only because they put up those multi point games. So we should just ignore those games because some other games weren't as good? He has his ups and downs like basically every player. Like some said, Backs generally starts slow, and yes I also haven't been stoked on most of his play so far this year either, but he generally puts up consistent numbers y.o.y
By this standard you should also be pointing the finger at Tkachuk who also hasn't looked stellar to start the year either but had a multi point game the other week. Guess we should ignore that game since he has been so so for much of the others so far.

Taking a while to get to 5000

When it comes to the expansion draft we also have to think about where Calgary will be as a team come June. if its another early exit I suspect a retool will be on the table and a new GM making the decisions. They'll probably want cap space. I can see Backlund being exposed in that scenario.

The Flames are not getting that player in-season without moving a player from their current protection list. I don't see that happening.

Hopefully this helps ease some worries about this potential trade.

It's hard to imagine us qualifying Bennett (unless things actually click for the rest of the season), and he'd be nuts to sign a different deal here instead of seeking new pastures, so you don't protect him.
If SEA really wants Backlund, we could probably trade him for a bit more value than simply letting him get picked.

Bennett will be UFA by the time the expansion draft happens.
If the Flames trade him, it will be by TD day.

Bennett needs to be qualified at $2.75M. Based on production and performance there is no way he gets qualified at that, and that is how he becomes a UFA.

yeah as mentioned, in order for him to be on the Flames roster and able to be exposed is if he either gets qualified at 2.5M+ or if he signs a new contract with the club. Hard to see either one of those things happening unless he goes on a real heater the rest of the year....which is extremely unlikely.

I disagree. I think they qualify him, protect Backlund and let Seattle choose between Bennett, Lucic or a D.

Fair point. If he doesn't get qualified or traded they should still have Lucic as a forward that meets exposure requirements so nothing really forcing their hand to make further moves. I still think keeping Backlund would be more beneficial as next year he as a modified NTC with 10 teams from what I saw on cap friendly and he atleast has a level of value a lot of other teams may find desirable. I hope he stays with us for his career but I'd rather us take advantage of his value through a trade than see him exposed and taken for nothing.

You think they will qualify him at almost 3M a year? When he produces as a guy who can be gotten for less than 2?
Agree to disagree i suppose.
That would be remarkably asinine cap management IMO. Something BT isn't known for.
That being said, I cant see Bennett here to finish the season anyways.

Bennett would actually be worth more to Seattle if he is unqualified (assuming he accepted the qualifying offer). It would give them the opportunity to offer him a more suitable deal (smaller AAV, longer term). If they can't work out a deal, they could always qualify him themselves.
I think that because he makes more than $1 million, he only needs to be qualified at 100% his current base salary.
