This isn’t the first Bennett trade request. I think if he can find some momentum with the 13/23 he won’t be going anywhere. He’s Treliving’s first draft pick. If they can work this out I think Brad has zero concern for what the media discusses.
It also confirms what noobs the there stooges are in the afternoon at the FAN960. “We will never see Sam Bennett in a Flames jersey again.”

Derek Ryan is listed as LTIR on cap friendly, that would free up some space for bringing in more cap in a Bennett trade correct?

This is the kind of thing you’d do trying to stave off elimination in the playoffs. In the first quarter of a regular season that isn’t even a normal regular season? With a game in Ottawa just two days later? SIX MINUTES?!
It’s the lever you pull when you look down the bench and see only Stryper tribute band members and Jim Rose Circus rejects. Nothing illustrates the Oilers better. That and that they didn’t score and lost anyway.

Perhaps without the Ryan injury Sam Bennett never dresses for the Flames again, but we'll never know. If Bennett doesn't move it will probably be because the GM looks in the mirror, and has a growth moment himself. Bennett's public request is a statement that the GM has failed in attempting to bolster his chosen core with veteran components. Brouwer, Neal, Czarnak, and now perhaps Simon and Leivo are evidence of Treliving's affinity for predictable types, and history has suggested that this approach has produced nothing beyond mediocrity. Continuing down this path, with this core will result in more of the same. The circular conversations on this site and coaching carousel are supportive of this observation.
In respect to Sam Bennett, maybe he gets moved, but his public statement is something this team needs. From body language it has always appeared that Gaudreau and Monahan (particularly Gaudreau) do not feel comfortable playing with the predictable, unpredictability of Sam Bennett. What these guys need with them is a more random element, that forces them out of their comfort zone. The league understands that Monahan's game is not handling the puck, so they pressure the puck to Gaudreau and then commit multiple bodies to disrupt his possession at pressure points. With Bennett on their line, there is another element who can beat a player one on one with some speed and handle. While Bennett needs to refine his game as to when and where he can take on a defender, adding this dimension to that line will force defenses take a different approach to the line in the neutral zone. All three of these players will need to make adjustments, and the predictability it appears Gaudreau and Monahan crave, will largely evaporate, but the possession game they prefer has been shown to be easy to control at 5 on 5, because only one of that pair is capable of consistently beating a defender one on one with a puck on his tape.
We will see what transpires, but a change has been needed and maybe this event will facilitate this change. The Lindholm line is fine, a third line centered by Backlund always has the ability to be more than effective, and if the trio of Gaudreau, Monahan and Bennett can manage to mold their games to some form of, "chaotic cohesion," this could be a dangerous squad for a few years. Might be easier said then done, but I would hope the guys in the room agree that doing things their way hasn't been working well. If they are satisfied with the results over the past few years then this team has bigger issues than the dissatisfaction of Sam Bennett.....

The return for Bennett will probably be underwhelming. If it’s for a player like Engvail I rather keep Bennett until trade deadline. If we are out , trade him for a pick. If we are in, keep him for playoffs and let him go in expansion or trade for min at draft.

It's amazing how think this lineup could be if you take out guys like Ryan and Bennett. I don't think either one is around next year, and it does free up nearly 6 million in cap. Although Valimaki and Dube will take a big bite out of that. But the team will need to find better than minimum salary replacements for them if they want to be a playoff calibre team.

Not really. It gives them some wiggle room while Ryan is out, but he won't likely be out very long. When you're using LTIR, you don't accumulate the cap space for use later like you do with normal cap space. When the injured player returns, you need to become cap-compliant again.
Unless the player will be out for the rest of the season, you can't really bank on LTIR to acquire new players.

I remain baffled by how enamored people are with the Winnipeg Jets right now. Their record is good, and they just won 2/3 against the Flames, and I think that all plays into it. But Winnipeg has started with an incredibly favorable schedule: 8/11 games at home; one trip to Ontario; 2/3 road games in Ottawa.
Don't be fooled by what's going on right now: Montreal and Toronto look like they are a clear top-two, but the Jets are very much in the same mix with Calgary and Edmonton.

They’ve also put this record together mostly without the services of Patrik Laine or Pierre Luc Dubois. The potential of Sheifele, Dubois, Stastny up the middle for 50 minutes sounds frightening. They basically have a team built like the Flames right now but better. One timers from everywhere, more playmakers, fantastic role players, Vezina winning goaltender, good coaching, excellent GM, outstanding scouting. Really, their only weakness might be on defense, but they’re defending well by committee and Morrissey is legit.
I’m not saying the Flames couldn’t beat them in a playoff series again, but compared to last summer, it would be infinity more difficult.

Bennett + 2nd rounder for Mantha?? I know he’s a left hand shot but he likes playing RW and has the size that could be a great addition to the Johnny Monahan line. Interesting target no doubt.

Mantha lacks intensity sometimes, particularly in his own zone, perhaps that’s one reason he was scratched. When he’s on, though, he’s huge and mean, and drives the net. If we could grab him for a disgruntled Bennett, I would be delighted.

Anthony Mantha makes 5.7 M
Have to throw in Stajan or Brouwer to make it work
