Loubo is a frikking hockey encyclopedia. I was like everyone else at first. His cadence and voice..... I had trouble with it. But he grew on me and I was and I am a huge fan of the guy now. When he went through that huge health scare, I felt compelled to donate a 100 bucks to his go fund me. A lot of these guys aren’t rolling in it like people think.
But it wasn’t unlike the Rob Kerr experiment. Unbelievable mind and knowledge, but the presentation lacked. PBP and colour requires the complete package. Jack of all trades, master of none. It’s impossible to expect every one to possess all the traits, especially when you start drilling down to the regional broadcasts, but there is so many people that could do a better job than Cassie, especially on a national broadcast. She has the gig of gigs, and it seems so cliched and mailed in.
“Gutsy Performance.”
What does that even mean?
Why do you use it to describe 50% of performances?
Isn’t it more suited to a Gold Favorite Speed Skater that managed to pull out a bronze despite a pulled hamstring?
It’s something to say, when you can’t think of anything to say.
Anyway. I am officially done with this topic. It just boiled over for me last night. And for the record, besides the Gadreau call, I think the PBP was excellent.
Putting Loubo on PBP is like asking a winger to play centre. He ended up falling back on cliches and had some pretty strange turns of phrase. The role is far more demanding than analyst and he just didn't have the skillset - he's better as a support player. I was one of his biggest critics when he did the PBP, but I do enjoy him in an analyst role.
Cassie's in the exact same boat IMO. She usually pretty good when on a panel or intermission segment where she has time to prepare, but she ends up falling back on cliches when she has to come up with interesting, on-the-fly analysis for a full broadcast.
Hrudey's not much better but he's more affable than either so he gets away with it.

He is counting on it. He makes a lot of high-risk plays. One day someone is going to lay him out.
And they'll bitch and they'll moan, but thats the defender's job.
The day will come when he spools up at centre ice and flies full speed into an unyielding opponent. Its not going to be pretty.
McDavid has talent. Lots of it. But he reminds me of a young Ovechkin. Kind of a one-trick pony. That didnt go so well for Ovechkin, but he spent the time and re-invented his game and now is one of the premier players in the League....well, the World. He will be one of the greatest players of all time by the time he hangs them up.
McDavid seems to have similar talents, but he also seems to have taken the 'Gulutzan' approach.
"If I keep doing the same thing over and over and over and over it will eventually work."
Gio is one of those guys that played so far beyond contract for so many years, that you can almost look at is as earned back pay for the last couple years of his deal. It’s basically the complete opposite of Phaneuf.
To me that has always been the amazing comparison. Two guys roughly the same age that came into the league in completely different scenarios. If anyone would have ever told you 10 years ago, where each player would be at 10 years later, you would have laughed in their face.

I cant argue with that. I agree.

Loubardias is the worst. I won't listen to the fan during games because he is so grating on my nerves.
I'm not the biggest fan of his colour work, but at other times he's one of my favourite analysts just because (as everyone says) he's a walking hockey encyclopaedia. If his middle name isn't Wiki, it should be.
That said, could he cut back about 80% on the rhetorical questions? Yes, he could.

I still like Lou but unfortunately can no longer really listen to his analysis on the Flames. I like him on color, in the moment, but pre and post game and in between games, I’ve stopped paying attention because he hasn’t said anything new in years.

Haha, nice. “You Knoooow who likes Loubo? Camronius does. Here’s a guy who gives it 200% every broadcast. He’s the first guy in the booth and the last guy out. That kind of dedication can’t be ignored.” ~Loubo voice.
Loubo is a personality and that’s what you’re supposed to have in these roles. Kelly is the same for me, they both have knowledge and personality.
Just like the CDC paste eater I’m sad to hear this board did the man a disservice.

Reason: Opportunity missed to mimic Loubo

The thing about Loubo is really a microcosm of the issues with TV media in general.
I didnt immediately like him. But he grew on me because whatever his idiosyncrasies the man knew what he was talking about and he called a good game.
It just took some time to warm up to him.
But in media time is currency and its not a notoriously patient medium. I think Loubo was a victim of that, and that to me suggests very short-sighted management.
If they'd stuck with him, I think they'd have found a real Gem. In the wake of the layoffs going on right now I hope he gets another shot because all in all, he was really good.
He has the knowledge and the talent. And if its just because he has a slightly annoying voice (initially) then I think that is very short-sighted.
You get used to his voice. The man is a treasure.

Man, I love reading the ATL. The hate that Oiler fans have for both Tkachuk and "Kneeordano" is hilarious. Just living rent free in their heads forever. Also looks like they have a new hatred for Lindholm as well now. I love it.
And it's cute that they call Gaudreau a cherry picker. I mean, have they ever actually watched their team's captain play? So funny.
The lack of self-awareness is one of the things I love most about Oilers fans... they are so ridiculous, I actually chuckle when I read it.
McDavid played 28 minutes, but almost a third of that was on the powerplay and virtually none on the PK. He gets the most cushy ice time possible.
It's got to bother some of the other players that outside of McD, Draisaitl, Barrie, RNH and Neal, you are probably not going to get substantial PP opportunities. Those players got between 6 and 8 minutes each, while JP got 2 minutes. The rest of the team got practically no chance to increase their production on the PP.

Loubo was not good as PBP. He’s perfect as a colour guy.
I liked him at PBP because it forced him to keep up with the play and keep his anecdotes and references to a minimum. I think he goes too far off a tangent as a colour guy sometimes.

I loved Loubo as PBP. In both roles.
I'm a fan of his, just because his investment in the game comes out in his voice and so it never feels like he's phoned it in, unlike a lot of these panel personalities. His "One word" phrases be damned!

I still use "doink" today when the puck goes off the post. I don't know why, it makes me giggle every time.
