Thank goodness they won that one. I hate losing so much.
My family just finished enjoying our breakfast sandwiches courtesy of our oiler fan neighbor that texted me right before the game last night wanting to bet something on it.
Yum.
oilers = no good
breakfast sammies = GOOD
Thanks Koskinen

This was pretty obvious last night, especially the “drive the lane, right of way” analysis during the intermission. I am glad these guys hold zero weight in the rule making for the NHL. If they got their way and hockey turns to basketball, so any team with 2 elite players and spare parts becomes a dynasty I am out.
I honestly think the networks want it back to the Gretzky years. Non contact on the elite player who racks up crazy points. The networks love it, and the player becomes the team just like the NBA. The refs can get in on the action to to make sure the right team wins. We can watch the same team win 4 years in a row, it would be amazing, and I won’t watch.

It's a dangerous play, player beware.
If McDavid wants to drive to the net at that speed, he should expect to be taken down, and it's going to be extremely dangerous for him. He was right to be upset yesterday, only because the call probably should have been 2 mins tripping on Tanev.
That being said, if Giordano face washed or roughed up the player that drive the net resulting in his goalie getting smoked, maybe it helps to deter McDavid to try that again.
The concept of physicality and intimidation is done in the NHL. It's a shame. It was the one thing that set hockey apart from all other pro team sports.

Yes, and Markstrom needs to be ready to ram his blocker down Mcdavids throat when he is coming in like that. He took the worst of that collision.

Did they say that on the broadcast because that’s actually one heck of a stat. I enjoy how Backlund seems to flip a switch against the Oil — hopefully it gives him some confidence and he can build on that momentum.

Of all the things I hope carry over from last night - it’s Backlund’s game. He has been so awful this season, but last night he was as good as he’s ever been. He was aggressive, smart and fast with the puck, and a complete 200 foot player. That’s the Backs we need.

Im a guy that really doesn't care about announcing enough to allow it to affect my viewing of the game occurring as it has zero actual bearing on whats actually happening on the ice. Last night though was without a doubt the worst "broadcast" i've experienced for a long long time. This is said having endured the babbling of Hrudey for years. He can be good at analysis but he is horrendous at color.
So no, being critical of Cassie is not necessarily sexist. She needs to be far better at her job.
|
Cassie provides more actual analysis than Hrudey. He mostly tells corny anecdotes and laughs at his own jokes. He has more style, less substance.

This was another Johnny game. Or more accurately, a Johnny 3rd period. There was no way they were losing that game. If the Oilers had scored again, Johnny would have created a 7th goal. He just decided to win.
Big win for the Blasty kits.

This is definitely true, she's almost always analysis. But she's also often either superficial or wrong. Which makes that analysis a drag on the broadcast. It's not like Ferraro, who adds information that the viewer probably hasn't considered. It's either obvious to anyone who has ever watched a hockey game, or... dubious.

This is probably accurate. Yet I don’t particularly like her and I like Hrudey, mainly because I like a team with rapport like he and Ball have. I think, as a colour analyst he provides “colour” more, where she provides “analysis”.
The complaints about Cassie are over the top and a lot seem contrived justifications, especially where they are the same things others do without comment. The one complaint I find accurate is that she seems to come prepared with a few things she expects to talk about and she ends up shoehorning them into the conversation.
I do find commentary to be the second oddest thing people complain about (I barely notice it). The first is picture quality because I swear I don’t see a difference.

The argument has always been, is the color commentator catering to new fans or us. I mean, we don't really notice it unless it's annoying.

I have not been impressed with Backs, Lucic or Mangiapane (last game he was better) so far this year.
Tonight they were great. So hard on the Oilers. Love it!
I’m going to be sad on a couple levels if/when Bennett gets moved.
1) he never developed into the modern era star his pedigree suggested.
2) although he hasn’t turned into the star I still love the guy. IDK why, but he just seems like a good guy. And such a warrior at times.

If your team winning depends heavily on the game not being decided 5 on 5, you're naturally going to look for penalties more. Leafs fans are the same.

Maybe it's not a Cassie specific problem, but I was damn near ready to turn the audio off last night. I don't watch the Oilers against other teams, but the near constant praise of the team and a certain player in particular is downright aggravating, especially when neither are even worth half the talk they generate.
I want to sit them down, tie them to a chair, and force them to listen to the game the next day, so maybe they can hear how pro-Oilers dumb they sound, and maybe start changing.
The announcers, when anyone else is playing anyone else, never seem to bother me. But on the rare times the Oilers are playing and I catch it, I just want to turn it off the announcers are falling over themselves so hard to suck up to the Oilers. It's ridiculous.

Considering that Ron Maclean stated on last night's broadcast that McDavid has the "right of way" if he gets a step on a defender, so "don't touch him", it's no surprise that the oilers fan base gets all worked up any time the opposition gets anywhere near him.
HNIC has been serving and chugging the oilers kool-aid for years.

Stupid oilers! Koskinen is bad. Glad the oil have him otherwise we might have been done after period 1.
Loved the lines yesterday aside from line 4. Barring injury, they should keep them this way. When Ryan comes back he should center our 4th with the new set of plugs we got in Simon/levio/Nordstrom or whoever they want to randomly pull up for a game. If we see any of these guys enter the top 9 outside of injury or a significant change in production I’ll start siding with those that say coaching is an issue.
Regarding our “top” line, it doesn’t matter who plays in spot 3. JG and Monahan are good enough on their own. It actually makes this the perfect spot for bennet. He can crash and bang a bit, take offensive starts and if he’s invisible that doesn’t go outside of what we see from JG and Mony as well. People harping that we didn’t see them for 40 mins doesn’t understand what they are. They are exactly that, and I thought they did their role perfectly. Slide by unnoticed, try not to be a liability, but hold a potent offensive strike that can be a dagger in games when it matters. That and maintain the PP. Their role was played perfectly yesterday imo.
Bennett needs the pressure off so he can simplify his game. The pressure was too big for him to be something he’s not, with higher skilled proven guys maybe he can focus on North-south crash and bang hockey and not try to force stupid toe-drags and reach-in out of position plays. Perhaps this creates room for JG and Mony to do their thing.
Mange and Dubes are going to dictate the success of this team. Their motors and compete are the highest on this team. If they continue to develop and are providing that complete game for lines “2 and 3” we’ll be a good team. I have no issue with lindholm/chucky aside from they’re a bit streaky, so I feel maybe mange and dubes hopefully balance that out some.
Roll these lines for the next 15-20 games please!
Re; Cassie. I do think she’s terrible. She was raving about JG’s defensive play and then goes on to show a clip where he turned over the puck in the defensive end. It’s stuff like that, that is executed so poorly on a regular basis that make me so opposed to her commentary. I am a big proponent for bigger roles for women in the game. You just have to point out the extreme contrast in love for Hextall that will tell you this isn’t an anti female thing. I personally just don’t think Cassie is good at her job and on-top of that, we get WAY too much of her. Perhaps if we had her involved a few times a year it would be palpable, but it seems like we get her every few games which is too much.
Ok last thought. I like hannifin, but am I alone in thinking his offensive instincts are really bad? Every time he shoots when a clear pass is available, or when it’s the right time to shoot but he fires it 10 feet wide I can’t help but notice. I hope this team is gearing up for Valimaki and Rass to be the PP drivers of the future.
Overall that was an entertaining BoA so not going to nitpick, I’d take another 9 of those this year
