Again, context. What exactly was he asked? I really don't know.
But if it was anything about why Bennett has been playing wing and center then the response seems entirely harmless.

Harmless sure. Nobody is getting hurt just more evidence the relationship is fractured. Deflecting criticism onto the player where often a strong leader will take public accountability. It’s his decision where Bennett plays, end of story. We don’t hear about other player’s requests and preferences when the coaches decisions are being questioned.

I haven’t seen any indication that Bennett dictated that final decision. Nor would I assume he did because a coach asked where he preferred to play... People are digging way too deep into this.

And there are more than enough things to complain about in Ward’s coaching. This isn’t one.

Absolutely. I find myself second guessing him and his decisions often (not that I'm an NHL-caliber coach or anything myself), I think there's lots there to have a healthy debate about. Some of the stuff I've read over the past 24 hours or so is really reaching for something that isn't there.

I feel like you don't need to be an NHL caliber coach to realize putting the Lucic line out late in a game when you need a goal is a terrible idea. Not sure why so many mediocre coaches don't understand when it's time to shorten the bench.

I don't think Treliving has a special place in his heart for Bennett, or Bennett would have started the season off on a higher line. Anyone who works in a large corporation knows that the people on the lower end are always willing to pucker up to their boss, so if Treliving had a sweet spot for Bennett, our boy Ward would have acted on it without a question. Certainly Bennett has sucked but put yourself in his shoes from last season.
1) He played great in the playoffs and should have been rewarded with some confidence coming into this season
2) Look at the guys who have been marched out ahead of him - Lucic, Simon, Mangiapane, Leivo, Ryan, Nesterov, Nordstrom. Arguably, Mangiapane has an edge over potential, but none of those guys have shown anything over Bennett, and if you and I were in the organization and kept getting the butt end, there would be a breaking point as well.
The chicken or the egg? It doesn't matter. Things have spiraled out of control and the blame is on both coaching and Bennett. Stubbornness from both sides hasn't helped.
Ward airing out personal discussions was frustration but as a leader it wasn't good and played out as unprofessional. Again, look at the mediocrity he keeps putting out there each night. Aside from Mangiapane, all those guys have no business on a championship roster, period.
And the bottom line is that's on Treliving, who is seemingly coming our smelling okay in all this.

Trust me, I'm with you on that one. He's made a few decisions like that this season that I wish he wouldn't.

Players are a different breed now but do you really think a guy like Sutter or Peters would ask, seriously, where Sam wants to play? It’s why Ward is popular with the players but there’s a fine line between being a players coach and letting the players run the asylum and eventually start to marginalize the coach’s authority.
The fact that Ward got that out in the public, not sure the motivation either. To be transparent? To take a shot at Bennett? To show he’s willing to bend over backwards for Bennett?
Anyways, Peters got more out of this core and more out of less talent, consistently over 82 games. No one said they loved him, but if players see a system that works the way the coach tells them it will work, and there is success on the ice, they’ll respect continue the buy in. If it’s a lot of hot air and the coach isn’t strong in his conviction, and or there is no consequences to not buying in, you get a Gulutzen train wreck again. Ward is trending that way too.

It's not just a Ward thing though. It's a common complaint from all fanbases about their coaches and it's baffling. Why do we understand but these paid professionals don't?

Or, maybe we all just think we understand, but in actual fact do not know what the hell we are doing.

I took it to be a sarcastic/ironic comment, highlighting the idea that Joe Fan thinks he is wise to hockey intricacy.

As I mentioned the other day, my sarcasm detector is broken as a result of the past two weeks.

I’m also not ruling out the possibility that I’m a better head coach than most nhl coaches. And cfl coaches. And nfl coaches. And mlb managers. Plus World Jrs, ncaa football, F1 team boss. You know what, let’s simplify, if it’s a sport I watch, even casually, I could coach it flawlessly.
Oh and head scout in all the above. And GM. Especially GM. But especially head scout. But especially coach.
Hell throw in the nba. I could coach a super team for sure.
I would also be the perfect owner who would never meddle. Because I’d also be GM, coach and head scout. I’d also be the mascot. I’d also put myself on the team. Nothing crazy though, just an “A” for me. Gio can still be captain. For now...
