Calgary Flames: 10 Takeaways After 10 Games

Originally posted on The Hockey Writers | By Brett Krauss | Last updated 2/5/21

The Calgary Flames have begun their season in the Scotiabank North Division, finishing 4-5-1 in their first 10 games. They have games in hand on the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks, but the Flames will need to start turning things around quickly to compete for a playoff spot. The good news is they are playing fairly well and doing the right things. The bad news is the things they are doing poorly are really costing the team.
The team is just under a fifth of the way through the season, and there isn’t a ton of time to turn it around. If the team can find a cure to some of their ailments, they’ll have a better chance to make the playoffs. After the first 10 games of the season, here are 10 things that have been noticeable from the Flames.

“Playing fairly well and doing the right things”. Maybe once in a while.

It’s like that article was different by 4 different people.

We have no coach. How do you cure problems when you have nobody willing to make changes?

I know it’s a different sport....BUT,

Leadership and winning starts at the top, as in ownership. The players are accountable to the coach.
All three coaches had little to NO head coaching experience when hired.

“Pittsburgh Steelers – The Steelers have been a consistent threat ever since Coach Chuck Noll took over the Steelers reigns. A huge reason as to why the Steelers are ranked one is they have had the best ownership in the league this entire time. The Rooney family is consistent, they care about their players and the players play hard for them. Since 1970 they have had just three Head Coaches and all three have won Super Bowls.

In 50 years....Mike Tomlin continues to be their 3rd HC.

I'm not sure what you're advocating.

Ward seems to be the kind of coach the Steelers have hired over the years -- some success as an assistant and at lower levels but no previous head coaching experience at the major league level. Do you want the Flames to stick with him for the next 15-20 years regardless of how the team does on the ice?

That seems to be the Steelers model.
