How can Sam not know that he could be a healthy scratch? Was it that pass to Backlund from behind the net that keeps getting talked about? He must read CP. It's obviously gone to his head.

Jesus.
If you're that frustrated, maybe you should take a break?

There is a long list of players that should have been scratched before Bennett (if he was scratched for performance reasons). I say this as a guy who doesn't think much of Bennett.

I could understand Bennett's frustrations at the instability with line juggling that has gone on with him. You'd need your head stuck in the sand not to notice it. That being said, we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and or why Bennett wants out.

As a Flames fan, here's my take:

- I don't think it's a big deal to Bennett that he got scratched. He's going to show up the next game and play, just like he showed up to both Montreal games and played. He, like the rest of the team, had a bad game on the second night of a back against the jets, but he wasn't dogging it. He's never been a player who really fits at right wing, and sometimes his play suffers at right wing because he's not a right wing.

- I don't think it's a big deal to Treliving that Sam requested a trade request. Players in marginalized roles do it all the time.

- I do think it's a big deal to Ward that his coaching is essentially being scrutinized by the media. He seems a bit insecure about this situation in general based on how he had to go off about how Sam "wanted" to play the wing (while omitting the context that playing center meant playing with the team's slowest wingers)

- I do think this whole situation is a bigger deal to the Media and the fanbase regardless of which side of the Bennett line you stand on, because this is exactly the kind of polarizing thing that the media thrives on and the fanbase feeds.

- I think Sam probably was overly candid in mentioning "playing games". He probably didn't think much of it, since he was just answering a question. That's the thing people really need to remember about player interviews. Most of the time they are answering a question. It's not like he's tweeting about it from a burner account.

tl;dr

the vitriol being throw around is a bit absurd.

Yeah, he wants a trade. It's his career.

No, that doesn't mean Treliving needs to or will trade him.

No, that doesn't mean he's acting like entitled brat either.

There's really no "situation" other than the one apparent by Ward's insecurity.

To me, the biggest deal about this scratch is this - we didn't ice the best roster we could last night. In fact we have not iced the best roster we could even once this season, though. As long as Nordstrom is in, and the lines are a mess, we're handicapping ourselves.

CsInMyBlood sure does!

Are you saying you think Bennett will break Sittlers record next game!?!? Are you saying he has a shot at Ovechkins goal totals!?!?!? Can’t everyone see that the guy should probably just be on bed rest for life!? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Samuel!!!!!!!!

However it has happened, there now seems to be an unfriendly situation between team management and a longtime member of the team. At the same time, the team played like trash last game and is near the bottom of the division. Doesn't look like much is going right or has been handled very well. With the pace games are played at this season, there's not much time to sort things out. Things need to change.

If anything, Gio will be pulling him aside and telling him to STFU and start worrying about 2 points on Saturday. These guys are not used to being coddled. I don't think they'll be showing Sam a ton of sympathy.
I think Gaudreau, Dube and others have come out publicly and candidly supporting their teammate that everyone including Bennett can play hard for each other with no distractions.

Bennett wasn't pulling any Dubois shifts...

Coach is playing games and creating huge drama and Bennett hadn't said a word. Now Bennett is answering questions but doesn't need to defend Ward's odd behavior.

If Bennett plays he will play hard for the 2 pts. Gio already knows that. Bennett doesn't execute as well as we hoped he would, but his effort is pretty obvious

None of this is incorrect.
But let's be honest here. This is a sports team that needs good PR, good reputation to attract players and coaches. Like any team.

What good does sticking it to Bennett do? Piss him off and get his agent riled up? What benefit for the team, organization or the coach is there?

If a player that hasn't been benched in 6 years is about to get benched, you tell him. Hey Sam, we are sitting you because we don't want you injured prior to trade. Or because we dont like how you are playing/handling the trade request or whatever. But lets keep it private.

Now this is a story for the snet hounds. And Sam has some tales to tell at his next destination. And the organization looks petty and unprofessional.

And for what? Because they didnt want to give the guy a heads up, even a text message or a phone call.

So.... are we 100% sure Sam doesn’t know why he was scratched? Are we 100% sure Ward didn’t communicate with him why he wasn’t playing?

Based on your argument, there are two forwards in the lineup with zero points. So the response isn't brutal

(though in reality, your argument is a bad one anyway)

No one here knows anything, just varying degrees of emotional responses to our franchise's highest draft pick turning out to be a dud who no longer wants to play for us.

No, we don't know a thing. People are way too emotional over this player

If any other bottom 6 player got scratched, nobody would bat an eye. But because it's Bennett apparently he should get special treatment.

And that's not a slight against Bennett, just to the people that seem to take every day to day thing that happens to him as a personal attack on his character. He got scratched. Woopty do. People reacting like Hartley is back terrorizing people again.

I don't believe anyone said that.

I think people were frustrated because the lines we saw in the previous game were worse than the lines in the game prior, and the results were as well.

Honestly, reading this thread is like watching a bad movie with a huge plot hole and I am figuratively **screaming** at the screen.

Some of you are willfully ignoring the plot hole and it is basically trolling now...

I repeat, only because you still don't acknowledge....

If you healthy scratch it's one thing, but when you physically separate him from the team and tell him to go skate with the taxi squad then you , Ward, are the only unprofessional in this tale

I don't get that vibe in the slightest, and I was heavily criticized Baertschi and pointed out numerous times how I thought Baertschi was dogging it, and would barely even be moving his feet out on his shifts, and I got heavily criticized for it at the time.

Whether you think Bennett is any good or not, that's a different discussion. Baertschi was never a useful player unless he was scoring - he did absolutely nothing else when he was on the roster, and was deservedly scratched and then traded. It didn't 'click' with him between the ears.

Bennett at least goes out and plays hard. He may - just like almost everyone else on the team - not have 'good games', but he is working out there and trying. He skates hard, he is still checking. I think it was in his last game that he came roaring back and stopped what would have probably been a sure goal - that's proof that he is working hard in all zones.

So no, the similarities between Baertschi and Bennett start and end at 'trade request'. Everything else that Bennett does is trying to help the team when he is on the ice. I think it is fair to question how he is helping the team, how much, or if he fits the team - but unlike Baertschi, he isn't dogging it out there in the slightest.

The comparison I'm drawing is of the emotional fan reactions, not the players themselves
