Bennett needs a little self awareness. Players that play at replacement level do not need an explanation from the coach.

Half the team, many of which are new to the team this year, with a smaller body of work, should be hoping for the exact same.

And we don't even know how long ago this original request was made. It's possible it was as long ago as last season or earlier.

It was only made public recently because Freidman was in touch with his agent and inquired about the situation.

What's he supposed to ask, exactly? He's not exactly one of this team's top minute munchers as it is. The team utilizes him as a bottom six forward. Bottom six forwards get scratched.

It sounds like after the news came through last Saturday, Tree and Bennett met and discussed it - I think it's probably safe that to assume at that time Bennett did formally request a trade.

The relationship is definitely broken seeing his answer about playing games.

Not a Bennett fan but they scratched him after couple of good games before they scratched Lucic or Backlund or Leivo all who have sucked every game so far. Just zero accountability.

I'm glad he called them out on it. Total mess, laughable.

You've played like a can of smashed @ss holes.

You are a healthy scratch. They didnt call your mom to inform her. You found out when you got to the rink.

Sounds about right. What is the problem here?

That they brought him back to the main group today, and then made him available to the media as if nothing was going on haha.

I think Ward was acting like a rookie, bad coach and because of an injury it created a hilariously awkward situation.

I think a guy that has never been scratched before would at least be given a heads up and an explanation. Out of respect.

I think that most regular players would get that. Sam, like it or not, is a regular here. This isn't Dalton Prout that was scratched.

I was surprised to hear Ward to be so defensive about Sam's placement on the team when the news broke out. He was quite upset about it. Felt like some bad feeling were being aired.

One does not simply scratch the Sam Bennett without following the proper protocols afforded a franchise player in his standing. Your churlish impetuousness and brazenly intentional obtuseness regarding the high end quality of play he brings to the bottom 6 and overall value to the franchise is blatantly obvious.

Or he asked to be traded then got mad when he got sat. Whatever. He’ll be gone soon enough.

Tough situation for the Flames GM, Bennett has not played well which I am sure does not make it easy to make a trade to get anything back of substance.

From reading the quotes linked in earlier posts, clearly Bennett is sour.

Ryan is injured, Sam gets back in. Hopefully it lights a fire under his arse, he does something on the ice next game and he can up his trade value so he might have his wish granted to leave the Flames.

Ward demoting him to the taxi squad without explaining what was going on moved everything beyond "Hopefully it lights a fire under his arse", Ward moved him off the team. When he did that, it ended the professional relationship in my eyes (...as an outsider...speculating on sparse amounts of information).

How about "what do I need to do to get back in"? "Is there something you want me to do"?

Another possibility is that he or the team was told before the previous game about what players needed to do or there'd be scratches and Ward thought Bennett could figure it out.

The other possibility is that Ward can't tell Bennett about a potential deal.
