I dont understand the idea of "we don't want to make the Bennett situation a bigger distraction" by dragging it out even longer. Rip the bandaid off and move on.

Those 5 guys right there is more truculence than what the Flames have now.
The Lightning were soft for years and went out and got tough and won the cup.
The Leafs have been soft for years and this offseason went out and got Simmonds, Bogosian and Thornton.
It's been a key ingredient for decades yet some posters on this board keep ignoring it and wanting the Flames to go all skill and small.

Have to be careful as there seems to be a conclusion some are jumping to that not liking Sam Bennett (or at least thinking he can be let go of fairly easily) equates to not liking heavy hockey. I don't mind letting Sam go as he is expressly not heavy enough.
It's hard to build/coach a team when you don't know what a player will bring season in and out.

Because that's not how trades work? You have to have a committed partner and a return of value that you're comfortable with. You can't make a trade just for the hell of it.

Fans would probably hate this, but what about a cap saving move?
To OTT:
Sam Bennett
Flames 3rd
To CGY:
Braydon Coburn (already cleared waivers)
Logan Shaw
SJ 2nd
Cap space up over 2M if Coburn stays on the taxi squad, and frees up Mackey to go to Stockton as their season should start sometime.

But Lazar was also 21 when he was traded. If Bennett was traded three years ago, given his pedigree, potential and upside of course he would be worth at least a 2nd like Lazar was. But that was three years ago. Same with Baertschi who was 21. Bennett is 24 today, you're no longer paying for potential so again the Lazar comparable just doesn't fit.

Anyone been following that Lazar pick and what it turned into by chance?

I actually think the Flames are one of the more truculent teams with Lucic, Rinaldo, Chucky, Bennett, Buddy, Ritchie. The Flames dont have the high end talent to let these types have a regular shift though (not talking about Chucky or Bennett). You can mix in more role players when you have the star power like Tampa and TO. The Flames start giving Buddy, Ritchie and Looch more ice time and it goes down hill quick. Our stars cant elevate them and / or compensate for those guys getting more ice time.. we need big bodies that can play or more more high end stars that can drag these types around and bounce pucks off of them. We have plenty of pure role players.

How could the Flames make something work with Tampa for Tyler Johnson?

Alex Formenton. Decent AHL stats but yet to stick in the NHL.

TJ wont waive. They're stuck with him. I thought this was documented in the offseason.

Eventually people just stop listening to you. You may continue to report things but no one really cares.

He didn't want to go from the Stanley Cup winner to Detroit. Understandable. He might do it for Calgary, knowing that he would have a real shot at second line minutes. Tampa would have to eat 50% of the salary.

Johnson is from Spokane too where lots of people are Flames fans. Just a thought anyway.

Johnson is still a 45 point player. At 5M and their cap challenges it's a bit much, but they aren't going to need to retain 2.5M to move him (if he waives).
