Well clearly some people care, some people don't. How could you possibly know who cares and how much? Not sure why you care so much that people like discussing hockey. What you call psychoanalyzing, the rest of us call hockey talk.
Maybe stop taking it so personally and it won't bother you as much. Speaking of psychoanalyzing, you appear to need to psychoanalyze why people hold their opinions and can't just discuss the player.
|
Do you, baby. I'm just expressing my opinion as someone who likes discussing hockey

I'd say 57th ...
That's 385 forwards (12.5 / team).
Bennett is the second most physical player on the average NHL team, which is in fact a physical player.
He's fourth in Calgary though which is interesting.

And you don't think Ward is ultimately responsible for the record and coaching decisions? Good idea to spite Bennett at the cost of the team? Ridiculous.

Guys like Bennett, Lucic, Ryan need to step up and start chipping in. What have they given the Flames aside from being completely overmatched whenever on the ice this year? 5 points combined while counting for roughly $9 million against the cap?
That kind of dough comes with expectations that you should be at least chipping in every few games with something more than not taking penalties or winning a few draws.
|
Then why isn't Backlund a healthy scratch by your reasoning? He costs more than Bennett and has played worse.

In the last few years this team has been the most talented group we've had in a long time. Especially this year, a legitimate goalie, great balance on D, forward group seems it should be deeper than years past. Yet I can't help but feel there seems to be a dark cloud over this team.
Possibly the Sam Bennett effect. Should be good, shows signs of being good. But isn't very good.

same coach who trots Lucic out there every night in key situations and then does a surprised pikachu face when lucic coughs up a pizza that ends up in the back of the net
he's not an objective "anything to win" coach or Nordstrom would not be in the lineup before Bennett

Which would be one reason to sit him. I personally don't agree with it, but that would be up to Ward

Last game I think it was when one of the analysts/broadcasters ran a replay of Tkachuk mucking it up and then they commented on how the team backed him up. You know who "backed him up" in the scrum? It was Benny.Benny was also out there laying hits last game, unlike everyone else.
This team seems to want to play emotionless, slow, soft, boring hockey by design. I don't believe in this approach.
|
Simply false.
Hits last game:
Nordstrom 3
Backlund 2
Monahan 2
Lindholm 2
Gaudreau, Lucic, Tkachuk, Bennett 1
I guess he outhit Ryan, Leivo, Dube and Mangiapaine who had zero. I'm assuming that's who you meant? They are everyone else?
This is the problem with the Bennett apologists, exaggerating everything he does.

It's been mentioned that Bennett doesn't want to play on the wing, but he isn't one of the top 4 centers on the team. As a winger, he is an OK 3rd or 4th liner. As a center, he is going to eat popcorn on occasion. I think that is the takeaway here.

So much energy/attention wasted on a pretty useless player. Tre needs to just move the guy already. Get a body back, the team won't skip a beat.

He's a guy who handles the puck like a hand grenade and cannot even make a simple pass to his linemates. Heck he can't even muster a shot that can challenge an NHL goalie. There's no need to fear for who is replacing a guy like this when he's not using his best asset - physical, intense play.
|
This just isn't true. Not sure why some of you have to create this narrative.
He's been disappointing, he's not a core piece, he certainly hasn't lived up to his draft billing ... but he produced like a 8-9 forward on an average NHL team. That's not replacement.
This year ... he's entering that replacement player realm with his start, but 9 games as a sample size doesn't amount to much for a label.

But you showed 4 wins/5 loses and Nordstrom played in 7 games. How is that different if I showed 4 wins/5 loses and Bennett played 9 games?
I would bench Nordstrom before Bennett, but the difference between Nordstrom and Bennett is sadly not that great.

I'm wasting energy on this but I don't feel like the Flames themselves are too concerned.
