Is it misandrist to say that a player must play for the team closest to his wife's hometown if she so chooses?
Sure...but once a player is a UFA who may warrant a NMC, it's a decision they would make together.

Reverse the above for the potential cost. Silfverberg would also require some cap considerations.

Out of left field, but what about trying to trade Ryan for Connolly? I personally don't think he's even worth Bennett at his contract value and playing level .

Ryan+2nd for Connolly - Connolly can play RW with Johnny-Mony while Backlund will have 2 of Bennett, Dube, and Mangiapane to paly with for consistency.
Not liking that idea.

I think we can aim higher for a better/younger RWer, especially if we are trading a 2nd rd pick in a package.

Connolly is 27 and pretty good

You won’t get much better players with term for a 2nd

Florida looks good under the new GM though so I doubt they are looking to add draft picks for roster players right now anyways

Edit: nvm the last part just read the Friedman article

Sure. But Textcritic and some others seem to think it’s a foregone conclusion that her wishes will take priority, which is not how ‘making decisions together’ actually works.

Disagree - Ward and the rest of the coaching staff have already put the ball in Bennett's court by giving him the option of which position he wants to play. They are catering to 3rd/4th liner. What more do we want the coaches to do? He's been getting some time playing with Backlund and Monahan the last few games against the Jets... and quiet honestly hasn't looked like he can be a top6 player.

I get that some of the past coaches are partially to blame for his development, or lack there of, but other players have also gotten better under those same coaches as well (Ferland, Tkachuk, Mangiapane). I feel like at this point everything and everyone who can be blamed has been blamed, from coaches, to line mates, to utilization, to minutes etc etc, except for the player. At some point the responsibility has to be on the player to reach his potential.
I would love nothing more than to see Bennett prove all the doubters wrong and solidify himself as a top6 forward, either on the Flames or not, but from everything I've seen of him in the past number of seasons, it's getting harder and harder to qualify why and how that will happen.

I'm one of those who called for Bennett to be given a legit shot with good players. He got that last game and I admit, he looked terrible, absolutely terrible.

I still want him to get another 9 games of playing with top players. I want to make sure no stone is left unturn and he was given all the opportunity but it just didn't work.

I thought Bennett did well last night on that line, and brought a different element for the opposition to be aware of, letting Johnny be Johnny. It's like that one play where Bennett took the puck at the blueline, and just bulldozed his way to the front of the net for a shot. It's not something anyone had to worry about on a Gaudreau-Monahan line, until Bennett got there and added that physical element.

Once Bennett was added to that line, they barely had any zone time. Mony/Johnny like to play the transition game, and they score on the rush. Bennet is a dump/chase, grind a long the boards which Mony/Johnny do not do. There's a reason he never gets an extended look on that line, its been what, 4 coaches now?

The coaching staff are not catering to him. The said after the playoffs he would get a chance at centre.. then the move Lindholm to centre as well making him the #4. He then asked if it meant playing up the lineup if he could go back to wing. This kid has been bounced around and moved so much he has nonidea what he is as an NHL’er. He won’t produce points playing 4th line

Again, I'm just going by what I think. Even without his fiance in Philly, I'm sure playing close to home for the childhood team and city you cheered for is enticing. He seems to be a guy who loves hanging out with his family. The fact that his fiance works and is from there just is another reason on top of it.

Would I like to be proven wrong? Absolutely. I am just not feeling it. I'm sure Tre's had these conversations with Johnny, so I guess we'll see where it goes from here.

Bennett as a winger is a dump/chase

Bennett as a center is a rush player

nhltraderumors is one step above Eklund, they generally spout the obvious and act as if it is a revelation, but they are currently expounding the shopping of Jeff Skinner.

I was wondering, right now his is the worst contract in the league, but would it be the worst contract in the league at half price ($4.5M/six years) and the NMC waived?

It would be sneaky, but if Lucic waived to go to Buffalo, and Skinner waived to come to Calgary, and both waived for the expansion, Skinner would look good on Backlunds wing, instead of fourth line in Buffalo. Buffalo is then on the hook for two years of Lucic instead of six of Skinner, and Skinner might play up to his salary here.

That's a lot of waiving.

Development isn’t linear.

Regarding Benny: I always recall the Burke quote of how power forwards develop later. It’s probably corresponding to physical maturity. Look at Bertuzzi. He took until he found naslund and Morrison before he really started asserting himself both offensively and physically. I’m not saying Benny could be a bertuzzi. Look at iggy as well. It took him a while to get going. It was the conny acquisition that really started him in that next offensive level.

Benny is a frustrating player but he is very tantalizing with his skillset. thus with his usage\performance he has really been a polarizing prospect.

I think you just give him more than a two game audition with Johnny and monny. Maybe a couple months. I don’t think he will hurt more than he will help. He is going to open a lot of space for those two softies of a first line. Sure they play off the rush but that’s why they are easily neutralized, Monahan anyway. Perhaps the struggle should fall at the feet of the biggest post season performers, I mean duds over the guy who brings his body to work nearly every game of this attrition we call nhl hockey.

Bob McKenzie on the BOS/PHI intermission report.

Mentions he's heard Calgary, Detroit, LA, Anahiem all checked in on DeAngelo... "just doing their due-diligence". Barf.

Yah, there is no way I'd want the Flames to be saddled with that contract. Trade for Skinner, and you pretty much eff your cap for 7 years, especially when we are looking at a flat cap for the foreseeable future.

I call BS on the Calgary part, they just dealt with a racist issue last season, do you think they are going to get into another one. I just wish the stupid media in the east who never watch a Flames game would leave the Flames out of it.

Excuse me? Where did I say any such thing?

My first post on this topic was made in response to another poster who was essentially arguing that a player's wife should have no objection to or opinion about wherever her husband plays, because money.

It was callous and sexist.

Yeah, even regardless of the contract, I don't want Skinner on the team in 6-7 years when he's well into his 30s. He has already started to regress big time.
