I doubt he was really serious about walking away from millions of dollars. People say lots of things when frustrated.

Then simply trade him to Kraken. His NMC becomes a modified one. Not sure what the conditions are but if he made a list of teams he wouldn't be traded to I don't know if it would have an expansion team on it.

I would think the condition would be for the expansion draft only.

Technically correct in that it’s not impossible.
But it’s not happening. Thought he has a decent game tonight

And never sign another player or have them waive to come here again

If Lucic stays healthy, he could squeeze in his 1000th career NHL game this season. Which would be a nice bookend. Just saying.

I actually think Lucic would want to play in Seattle. He's from Vancouver and has expressed that he wants to be close to home and family. Can't see him saying no to this request.

As the Vegas example has shown, expansion teams aren't necessarily the boulevard of broken dreams they once were. Not the worst sunset to ride out on.

So he could go from the closest team now, which would be second closest then, to the new closest team
I feel like the hour flight without border crossing is kind of closer for practical, time based purposes

You can take a train or drive in just over 2 hours. Faster than going through security and flying plus travel time to and from each airport. He could also live just north of Seattle to further cut down on the trip.
Border crossings with a nexus are very quick. When I could do them, I did it weekly. Usually no wait time unless it was a holiday. I worked down in white Rock once a week, and we would cross for lunch sometimes to get Mexican food.

Plus, Lucic has a ring. He’d be a fan favourite on Seattle, with little pressure.

I expect that Lucic will waive to go in the expansion draft.
Assuming he doesn’t mind going to Seattle, you can convince me that he won’t put any restrictions on the Flames ability to give Seattle draft capital to select him.
But as Vegas saw, there were pretty good players available with cap for free or even with draft capital attached. Fleury even brought a 2nd round pick with him.
Lucic is a plug with pretty substantial cap hit attached. The cost to get Seattle to select him would be enormous. It would start at a 1st round pick.

If your suggesting he could go to Vancouver and play he said he never wants to be back there. This was years ago after he was partying there and another person picked a fight with him . Specifically a canuck fan when he was still with boston. It wasn't even the first time he's had issues in Vancouver. This was actually a big reason he chose to go to Edmonton over Vancouver . He's even stated it would be a dream to play for the Canucks but he's been attacked many times in Vancouver.
Direct qoute
"“I have no reason left to try and defend my city, and the people of my city,” said Lucic at the time. “I’m done trying to defend the city I’m from. I’m disgusted and outraged that it had to come to that. Other than being at Rogers Arena, no one will ever see me in downtown Vancouver ever again.”

It’s one thing if Lucic waives for expansion , it’s a whole other thing if he is taken. I couldn’t imagine the draft capital it would take for Kraken to take him. They are not going to do it for a 2nd round pick. Lucic is a flame until his contract runs out or if he retires early.

Even if it were possible, the Calgary Flames are not going to ask Lucic to waive for the expansion draft, and then turn around and torch that good will by moving him to the minors. SMH

Gentleman's agreement? Meh. I don't doubt that there was a discussion about it when Lucic was acquired. But gentleman's agreements mean SFA unless it's written and signed on paper. A notable example of such an agreement biting the Flames' in the ass was Iggy's so-called gentleman's agreement. Didn't quite work out the way we had hoped.
So while Lucic may have agreed to such an agreement in a gentlemanly fashion, I won't rest easy until I actually see his name on the official league document stating he is unprotected. As a player with a full NMC he holds the cards entirely in his hands and unfortunately the fate of the team along with it. I'd be lying if it didn't make me feel a bit nervous. But by all accounts he's a good dude so hopefully my fears are unfounded.

I think it's a safe bet that he waives, but I am not understanding all this talk of him going to Seattle. There is NO chance that he is claimed, unless he is the only body that we have to expose.
