This is exactly right. The Flames had the edge in 5 on 5, just didn’t put the puck on net enough, and the PK let them down (in fact the second one was going well except they failed to clear and got beat down).

Flames have 10 even strength goals in the first 7 1/3 games. Gaudreau has 3, Backlund and Lucic with 2, each.
That’s gotta get better...in a hurry.

It's not just tight. It's also confusing. If I've been watching hockey for 30 years, it really shouldn't be so common for me to not really know what the call was. If they just blew the whistle and didn't announce the penalty I often wouldn't even know why the game had stopped even with the replays.

Is it just me or have there been an inordinately large number of phantom tripping calls this year?
Or that just in Flames games?

You can’t when everybody is standing still... but why the hell is everyone standing still? Have teams not watched tape on this guy yet? He’s fast, that’s it. Take that away and don’t take dumb penalties, and you can get a win while your 3rd and 4th lines get some reps.
Damn it, now I’m doing it...

Yeah, it’s been weird.
Nesterov actually tripped/hooked two Jets at once and got away with it no problem...but Gio and Hanifin got called for...reasons?

She was “I mean, I mean” like Bailey the teenage movie critic on Weekend Update.
Where does SN find these people? Do they get paid?

2 of those are empty netters, so we average just ever so slightly more than 1 5 on 5 goal a game. But we have kept the lines more or less the same all season so they should e getting to know each other.

Tight officiating is fantastic and they should always do it. If the refs are calling every hook and slash even if it's minor, take the ####ing hint and stop hooking and slashing people.
The concern is when they miss things or allow embellishment, or arguably worse, the guy drawing a penalty by holding the stick. But I haven't seen too much of the latter and really none of the former.

WPG Connor is talking correct about puck support all over the ice. CGY needs to do that

It's a symptom of the fact our coach has no clue what he's doing. He seems completely incapable of judging the results on the ice in real time and doing anything to correct issues If something isn't working he just keeps doing it. Over and over again. It really is Gulutzan 2.0.

It's kind of everything with this team.
Coaching decisions by Tre have always left a lot to be desired. Obviously a ton of coaching talent has been available during Treliving's tenure, Vigneault, Claude Julien, Gerard Gallant the list goes on. But Brad seems to really think that coaches with suspect records of NHL success are the ones to go with.
Hitching our wagon to a core that has proven very little. There is some talent on this team no doubt but it seems like Treliving was eager to lock up this core of players that has delivered one playoff round win over 7 seasons. Not only has he locked up the core but has built around it. Now we see a core that has shown a track record of pretty pedestrian results continue to deliver that level of production.
Goaltending seems to be the one thing he has figured out, albeit for the first time since 2014.

Nah. Fully disagree. This is how you get guys taking dives and suddenly not knowing how to move their feet just because someone got near them.
It will over time become something akin to soccer
