The Bennett-Patrick swap gives them a very good playoff contributor and tough guy to help them get through the east.
The flames get a lesser but still electric forward and get to take a chance on Patrick to make up the difference.

Last year Konecny was the better player but a fair margin. And consider years of control left.
And the potential gap that Patrick has is just way more than Bennett.

i had forgotten who was drafted after Nolan Patrick, and the Flyers could have had a couple gems in Heiskenin and Makar. 20/20 hindsight

Why do so many people assume that money solves every problem? It is bizarre to me that the allure of being close to family and friends is so casually dismissed by some as seemingly irrelevant or inconsequential.

I would say if your ambition in life is to be a pro athlete and family and friends is a must have nearby issue, then that career choice is probably not for you. It comes with the job.

Plus, it'd be different if Johnny's already locked in long term, then you can argue his future wife might have to adjust and move to Calgary. Johnny has the option to explore UFA in less than 2 years, and he can really decide where he wants to be in the future. What's to entice him to stay in Calgary, other than a long term contract that overpays him?

Money doesn't solve every problem, but IMO it's generally at the top of the player's list when considering contract offers in the NHL.
In JG's case I'm not sure, however, that the Flames can offer a lot more money than competitors anyway, especially considering taxes in some locations. So if they can't beat other offers and maybe only tie them, then the other stuff certainly becomes an issue.

Was he a better player by a fair margin? He was absolute trash in the playoffs and had slightly better offensive numbers. Not sure that qualifies being better by a fair margin more like he was marginally better based on stats.
Gaudreau is a ppg player over his career. Konecny is 0.63
Flames definitely give up the best player in the trade now and in the future with a Gaudreau-Konecny swap

A guy in his best season was slightly better than Gaudreau in his worst.
Gaudreau is the better player...I don't want to hear some of you complain when Gaudreau scores 100 points on another team

Gaudreau's jersey shore house is irrelevant...that is a summer home. He isn't living there no matter where he plays.

Vancouver's probably thanking their lucky stars they didn't win that draft lottery. They had to settle for Elias Pettersson instead.

Konecny..: 66 games, 61 points
Gaudreau: 70 games, 58 points
if that is 'a fair margin', what is this?:
Konecny..: 82 games, 49 points
Gaudreau: 82 games, 99 points
Yes, Konecny is younger, and cost controlled for longer. But his best season to date was marginally more productive than Johnny's worst. Gaudreau had 78 points at the same age as Konecny's breakout season of last year.

Yup Gaudreau is the better offensive player, that shouldn't be questioned.
Konecny is grittier, and might be better defensively, but Gaudreau is a tier higher level when it comes to offense.
But Konecny closes some of that gap because of the 3 extra years he has at $5.5M on his contract.
Honestly it's an interesting question for Philly because they could look at it as 2 years of Gaudreau vs 5 years of Konecny...but if they trade for Johnny they easily have the inside track at re-signing him so they could actually look at it as 5 years of Konency vs up to 8 years of Gaudreau.
Honestly if I'm Philly I'd probably trade Konecny for Gaudreau...I just think Gaudreau gives them a dynamic they don't have and I think they could probably re-sign him to a deal that's probably a bit below market level.
And if I'm the Flames I'd probably do Gaudreau for Konecny, I think that gives them a RW that extends the window and fits a need on this roster.
I actually think it's a trade that could make sense for both teams.

Not disputing most of this, just want to point out that Vignault expressly said that Konecny was being scratched last game because he was among the forwards not buying into 2-way play as he was stressing. Konecny's defensive reputation is, IMO, undeserved.
IMO that's why the Bennett-Patrick swap is also needed. We have no way of knowing if Konecny will definitely be a reasonable offensive replacement to Gaudreau outside of one season. Ergo, we need something to make up the difference. Trading our high and frustrating pick forwards might be just the ticket.

Jokes aside, I feel like Johnny has come in this year with a renewed commitment to 2 way play. He has spent far less time hovering around the blue line while the rest of the team plays D this year.

Last game I saw him cover for a D who went deep and then break up the play going the other way.

Bennett would be a folk hero in Philly. If you step back and look at risk-reward for a JohnnySam for Patnecky it's closer than you would think.

Yeah, and it’s part of the job from ~15 years old onwards. If you bust your ass for 14 years trying to get yourself to a position where you can make that decision, if you like, I don’t see how it isn’t a priority.

Well factors come into play. How good is the player? Is he willing to take less to play closer to home? If you are drafted like in the NHL you won't get that choice until you are qualified for UFA and if you are not a top tier talent you are probably not getting your hometown choice. The majority of pro sports players do not fall into the category where they can always lure the home team to pick them up. It doesn't work that way.

Yeah I know they don’t. But the best can create that opportunity for themselves. Johnny is top percentile in the league.
