If the Flames have been trying to trade Bennett and IF other GMs thought he was a mismanaged diamond in the rough, then he for sure would have been traded by now. That was the original point of my post which OP has misquoted.

But you're walking back your statement. You said clearly 30 other GMs didn't have interesting in him, and called that a fact.
Now it's no GMs think he is a mismanaged diamond in the rough ... once again a leap.
Why say "fact" and "for sure" when neither are true?
A GM could easily think he could rehabilitate Bennett, but when it comes to asking price the Flames just won't go as low as they need to be to get the deal done.
Don't think I'm cherry picking at all. You are making claims as certainties that just aren't so and getting called on it.

Except that's not what you said. What you said was:

What an odd thing to pick up of all the stuff discussed in this thread.

Which was neither a fact, nor correct.

Yeah this

What did he expect though? To play center ahead of Backlund, Monahan, Lindholm?

Sam doesn't strike me as a deep thinker. But I suppose he could easily imagine that Lindholm would end up back on the top line RW, since he'd never stuck at C before.

Bennett + 2nd for Manson
Feel like something like that could be beneficial for both teams.
|
Why are we trading a 2nd to get a third pairing Dman (for the Flames). Seems like it is tossing a pick away.
When you read the other board despite his poor numbers he is a player that fans of other teams covet. I think his gritty style of play, proven playoff performance and high draft pedigree will allow the flames to do okay on a Bennett trade. I still think the right target is a similar former high pick that has yet to gain a ton of traction with their team.

Where did he think he was going to play when he said he wanted to be at C?

Same could be said for Lucic and Nordstrom though lol. They're all on the fourth line because the Flames don't have the depth to keep them in the pressbox at this point.

I doubt it was the line number that was the issue, but whom he'd be playing with.
I think he probably thought he'd be on a line with Lucic and Dube again...instead he was played with Lucic and Nordstrom.

Sure. Probably went something like this.
Random GM: Hey Brad, interested in moving Sam Bennett?
Treliving: No, not really. We still believe in Sammy. He just needs some time to find his game and we believe that is happening in short order. It's all part of the process.
Random GM: If you say so Brad, but he appears to need a change of scenery. We're interested in taking a chance on him and giving him opportunity that doesn't appear to be there in Calgary.
Treliving: Okay, what are you offering?
Random GM: We'll throw you a 4th rounder or "player X in the same situation of not having panned out."
Treliving: I'm thinking a first round pick. Sam is a former 4th over all pick and he's electric in the post-season.
Random GM: Brad, get serious. He's a sub 20 point producer at this point in his career. He's been good for you in the post season, but you've had your head caved in when that happens. Plus, you're paying him a lot of money to produce little. We're taking the risk here. A 4th seems about all the guy is worth at this point, and that may be generous considering the cap situation, his qualification status, and the up coming expansion draft where I might have to spend a slot on protecting him.
Treliving: Okay, the 4th makes sense, if you include two seconds. Sam is an electric player!
Random GM: Thanks Brad, but no thanks. When you come around to your senses give me a call. I might still be interested, but remember that with each passing game my offer is dropping. *click*
Treliving: The process is really coming together!

Fair - yeah maybe a pick doesn't need to be added in the Manson scenario.

3C and Lindholm at RW is the assumption.
It could also just be a linemates thing.

Wasting Dube with Lucic and Bennett just seems like a poor choice.

Then he still didn't do the math, with Lindholm also at C, since that required Dube to move up the lineup. Leaving him with one of Leivo, Nordstrom, Simon or Ryan. But in any event, he couldn't have imagines getting more minutes or better situations than Backlund, Lindholm and Monahan.

@Fan960Steinberg
#Flames head coach Geoff Ward says coaching staff gave Sam Bennett a choice as to where he wanted to play to start the season.
Ward says Bennett chose centre initially. A few games in, he requested to go back to playing the wing.

Crash and Bang Winger

Tkachuk Backlund Lindholm
Gaudreau Monahan Mangiapane
Lucic Bennett Dube
Simon/Nordstrom Ryan Leivo
I'd like to see them roll with that for 5 - 10 games and see how it goes.

Bennett has played no better than Lucic or Nordstrom...those guys could say the same thing. Sam can't make or take a pass for some reason.

Bennett needs to play better regardless of who his linemates are. Certain skills aren't reliant on the linemates - for example, making the smart decision and being able to drive the play. To me, he has just has never shown that.
Putting Bennett on the first or second line likely won't make Bennett a better player but will likely make those lines worse lines.

I could see why Bennett would think it was an option though...that was the Flames best line in the Bubble.

They could have easily made it work and it was that way to start pre-season.
These were the lines at one point in the camp, and it changed with Dube moving up before the season started.
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Leivo
Gaudreau - Monahan - Simon
Mangiapane - Backlund - Ryan
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
So I don't think it's crazy to think that Bennett thought if he played center he was going to stick with the same linemates he had success with in the bubble last season.
