Francis on The Fan (I know, it’s Francis) saying that maybe Bennett didn’t request a trade. Might just be his agent?
Also they didn’t necessarily go through the proper channels. As I the media was notified and not the team.
Man I would hate for this to become a distraction to the team, based only on something some wingnut agent came up with on his own.

An agent doesn't do anything the client doesn't authorize him to do (if he wants to remain in the business)...

I think it's also a little lost in translation between the agent and the media. 'Open to a trade' is a long ways away from "Trade me right ####ing now"

^^ Exactly. Why would the agent, without the knowledge or consent of his client, just decide on his own that the player should be traded?
Francis being Francis. Bennett asked for a trade. Full stop.

I thought the same thing. If that was my agent, I would be telling him his services are no longer required.

This kind of seems like a tactic to give Bennett better opportunity - or the opportunity he was promised. It lets the Team know he isn't exactly happy, he's not demanding a trade but he'd be open to one... maybe a bit of pressure on the team to improve Bennett's ice time. If he wanted to be traded right now, that's what would have been said IMO.

If his agent is any good, he'll be encouraging Sam to request a trade. But as mentioned, any agent who prefers to remain employed, would not request a trade without his client's authorization.
Also agree that Sam and agent asking to be traded is very different from pouting and demanding a trade.
In this case, I think the team has been trying to trade Sam for a while and only now has Sam indicated that he'd like it to happen sooner than later.
He's pending RFA, won't get qualified and will go UFA. He's going to take a significant pay cut if he wants to sign because nobody is signing him for $2.5m/yr. That's why he wants a trade. He'd be better off in Ottawa or some other bottom feeder where he can get minutes and an opportunity to increase his salary demand this offseason.

Friedman reported on 960 a few years back that he heard Bennett had asked to be moved. This was like 2017 or so. I don't think the story went anywhere, not much traction, likely then it was just an unhappy player looking for more opportunity. I'm curious if Friedman talks about that during any of his segments on the Fan this week.

Because I bet whatever we get, he will be worse than Bennett.. I'm hoping to be wrong but that's my gut feeling.

Here’s the craziest thing about Sam Bennett’s trade request.
It never happened.
Bennett has not asked the Calgary Flames to trade him.
Several sources inside the club told Sportsnet.ca team management was blindsided Saturday by Elliotte Friedman’s second period report that cited Bennett’s agent, Darren Ferris, as saying his client would like a “change of scenery.”
No one inside the organization is questioning Friedman’s reporting.
But everyone is questioning how a certified agent could think this is an appropriate way to try effecting positive change for his client.
This isn’t to suggest Bennett isn’t contemplating whether the grass could be greener elsewhere.
Clearly his agent didn’t just make this up.
It just wasn’t properly communicated to the team.

Be lucky if they can get a 2nd round pick for him at this point probably.

I'd say a guy like Alex Nylander would be intriguing, but looks like he's injured. RW, shoots right.

Right, that's my understanding. It's all more of a 'my client would like more opportunity, if one isn't available here maybe it's time to find him one elsewhere'
Not a direct 'my client wants out, he gets no opportunity.'
That's kinda how Freidman reported it too but that sort of thing gets lost in translation. People read between the lines and go "He's demanding a trade!"

I find that hard to believe but I guess it is possible.
I would bet my house GM BT has been trying to trade Bennett for at least 2 years and has gotten only insultingly bad offers.
Whether Sam officially requested it is sketchy reporting by Francis IMO. Sam probably didn't request it because his agent told him that the Flames were shopping him with no teams making good offers.
Now Sam/agent are trying to put a bit of pressure on Flames to finally make it happen, even if it is only for a 4th round pick or a bad contract. If the Flames are "blindsided" by this revelation, then I have no choice but to determine they are morons. Of course he wants to be traded.
I'm betting the team said "eric there's been no formal request from Sam" and Francis went ahead and said "blindsided". Remember folks, if it isn't in quotes, then it is Eric Francis' opinion and his opinions are trash.

I'm also not sure I see a trade happening this season. Not in these economic conditions around the league and not right before an expansion draft.
Expose him to Seattle and if they don't take him re-visit the issue in the off season

I don't believe that's what is happening here. Francis is saying that the agent had not yet spoken to the team, but not contradicting that Bennett would like to move to a different team. And I believe Friedman reported essentially the same thing, that Bennett would like a change of scenery.
So seems to me the "story" is that the agent/player is asking for a trade first through the media instead of quietly going to the team.
That's my interpretation anyway. Not how the agent should have handled it, but whatever.
