To be fair, didn’t Cogliano play on the oilers’ cup finals team in 06?

What about Drake Batherson. A 22 year old right shooting right wing. One year left then an RFA. Saves some money on cap. Former fourth round pick. Has not done much at the NHL level but trending up nicely.
Helps Ottawa with centre depth, and cap not an issue.

What does that have to do with Cogliano's desire to not play for a trash organization and his happiness?
The Oilers were still dog#### while fluking their way to a Cup final in 2006.

No. Didn't join them till 07-08 the first full season of rebuild 1.0 after trading Ryan Smyth. Him Sam Gager and Robert Nilsson were the first trio of new stars that was supposed to restore glory of the 80's.

Could you leverage Bennett in a trade with Gaudreau to PHI and improve the return?
Edit: prompted by a story I just saw on Flipboard that a JG trade to PHI is inevitable given he has no intention of resigning here - according to the article. Not posting the link as the speculation is nothing new.

I would not be in favour of that. Bennett hurts the return on a Gaudreau trade, not helps it.
If we decide to move on from Johnny, it needs to be a blockbuster. We must get back a return that sets up this team to succeed and win.
Using Johnny to get rid of a Sam’s contract would not be a good move for the team from an asset management perspective.
Best bet is let Sam go to FA or trade him for a late round pick or a player who is also a pending FA and overpaid to see if they play well enough to warrant a new contract. That’s if we make a move now, which I highly doubt happens.
Bennett is going to be a FA this summer. I don’t see why anyone would trade for him. Maybe as a depth guy at the deadline on a team with cap space who doesn’t want to make a blockbuster? In that scenario, flames maybe recoup a 3rd.
If anything, I could see this trade being requested because Sam knows he won’t get a decent contract from the flames or from anyone else when he goes UFA and thinks he can up his value if he plays elsewhere for the rest of the season. I find that to be wishful thinking on Sam’s part tho.

He has no defining characteristics as a player. Not a good passer, doesn’t use his line mates well, doesn’t make them better, isn’t particularly tough (except last playoffs which we still lost), almost never fights, isn’t particularly physical (except last playoffs which we still lost), doesn’t kill penalties, isn’t smart, doesn’t have a great shot, doesn’t have good hands, isn’t a PP specialist, he’s not a scorer, he’s not a set up guy, he’s not a checker, he’s not a grinder. He is the literal definition of an nhl plug.
So what are you seeing here? Except defending him against false narratives. Build him up, post some stats, some observations about his skill set, anything! Just don’t repeat that he was gritty once in a playoff series and we need playoff warriors because clearly his amazing performance didn’t help us win.

Speaking of false narratives, you have NO IDEA what the 30 other GMs think of him.

I just dont understand why Philly would be dealing for Gaudreau.....they arent very good trade partners IMO.

Well I know they don’t value him enough to have traded for him already. That’s a fact.
What an odd thing to pick up of all the stuff discussed in this thread.

The way Johnny is playing you have to keep him until at least the tdl. If we are losing, then maybe. Otherwise we keep him.
Sam i would trade for anything with a heart beat. All the better if it plays rw. Gusev is my favourite option in the thread so far.

He’s RFA but he isn’t getting qualified, so he’s effectively a UFA.

Which is why i really doubt Seattle would choose him in the draft.
Take another (Kylington maybe?) and if they really like Bennett...just sign him as UFA,, very unlikely he will cost much.

At this point Seattle will be taking Tanev, which honestly would be a big loss.

Realistically, I think wherever he goes, he will be the same player.
There are maybe a handful of players over the last decade that played as much as Bennett and then broke out. Is Wheeler the last one?

If he fails elsewhere, there would be far more I told you so's that if he succeeds

???
Why would the Flames leave Tanev exposed? Andersson, Hanifin, and Tanev seem like the protected list?

Still early in season but if things stay the same Gio should be left unprotected.
