Flames 2 Habs 0
Game Takes: Flames 2 Habs 0
- Markstrom steals two points, that's the game story
- Gaudreau keeps his points streak alive with first period game winner
- face plant second period keeps Calgary streak of less than 60 alive
- better third at least

People were freaking out after the last game but should probably be more concerned after watching this one
Without Markstrom we get embarrassed, and after a players only meeting the performance tonight is pretty concerning. They really coasted with a one goal lead
Lucky win and the better team lost tonight IMO. Thanks Markstrom

My thoughts EXACTLY.
I'm happy we got the two points, but jeez the amount of people that absolutely s*** on you for pointing out the negatives in the Flames' play in an undeserved win is almost hilarious, even when you point out that they played/deserved way better than their 3 straight losses indicate.

Name a Flames season in recent memory that didn't have a "players only meeting" as a season story line to right the ship?
I'm going to go with 2014-2015 under Hartley, when we were supposed to be bad, but surprised and missed the lotto chance at McDavid.

It’s all timing. A lot of people just want to enjoy hockey and not find a way to piss on the parade within the first minutes of enjoying the 2 points
|
Agreed. Hockey is funny that way.
In any other case, I would just take the 2 points, be happy and move on.
But what's concerning to me is that the game immediately following a players-only meeting, they had to rely 100% on Markstrom to steal the game for them. I expected them to come out and play an excellent, structured game. That is the opposite of what happened. They showed more emotion, yes, but in doing so they played a horribly structured game in which Markstrom had to bail them out.
I do have high hopes that they'll be able to implement the emotion they showed tonight into the quality hockey they were playing before (even during their unlucky 3 game skid), but I was just disappointed in the quality hockey they displayed after what was apparently a serious players-only meeting.

Ugly game, tough to watch and cheer at the same time with the exception of Markstrom.

Well it's a good thing we aren't letting in many 5 on 5 goals, because we certainly aren't scoring many either.

Tkachuk probably the worst Flame on the night. He hasn't responded well after the Muzzin incident. Someone needs to explain to him if he really wants to win as bad as he supposedly does he would quit trying to make fancy highlight reel passes when regular passes would suffice. We get that he likes the between the legs pass/shot but it's so low percentage many a play die on his stick or result in turnovers. Really frustrating watching him last night.

Yep the only blind pass that made sense was when Allen was out there with him and Tkachuk fired it in the slot. Smart play and the right play. But that was it.
For a guy who people say drags his teammates into the fight, he has a habit of abandoning them once they get in there. Honestly don't think its intentional but it seems to happen.

4.19 goals expected for Habs on the night.
Markstrom completely stole that one.
Flames actually generated 3.66 goals expected so strange to see only 4 high danger chances measured for them? Does not add up. Wondering if shots in the slot that miss the net are not counted as high danger chances?

Flames homers gonna attack you but you’re spot on. Guy was atrocious killed so many zone controls on power plays. Tons of turnovers. He’s been very underwhelming most of this season.
Not gonna win many games when Ryan is one of your best forwards on he night. But hey this teams devoid of criticism throw your blinders on we won

Always love a post where the person basically labels everyone that might disagree with him as biased and wrong.
Well done!
No point in disagreeing with either of you I guess.
(Tkachuk had a terrible game)

I don't think they played a horrible game structurally. First of all, with regard to playing after a team meeting, that isn't going to magically result in more confidence and better play (that is hoping up the wrong tree). What you want to see is more compete. And we definitely got that. SO I think your criticism here misses the mark.
As to how they played, I think the game was a perfect contrast in styles, and showed exactly what I don't like about their system.
First, Montreal. They play exactly the way I want the Flames to play. Without the puck, they pressure everywhere. They attack the puck carrier, and continue to attack until they turn it over. Then, as soon as they get the puck they GO. Just like Hartley's teams (the go part).
Conversely, the Flames. Whenever they generate a turnover, they circle back and regroup, so they can move up the ice in a 5 man unit. The problem with that is that it allows the defense the time to regroup as well. So, 5 men attacking 5 men. In the NHL, that rarely leads to much. Team defense is so well structured, that 5 on 5 attacks just lead to congestion. The other problem with circling back is that, if they make a bad pass, they turn the puck back over in their own end - something they did many times last night, under the pressure of Montreal's forecheck.
That is what I saw last night. The energy was there, the drive and determination were there. But their system sucks the life out of their attack. It is exactly the same thing we watched under Gulutzan.
Having said that, the Flames still generated a lot of good scoring chances, unfortunately, they missed the net more often than not.

Well, there are thankfully not going to be many games in which Ryan is one of the Flames's best forwards.
I thought the Flames were fortunate to win, but this also felt like some retribution for a few games this season in which they were unlucky not to get even a tie. I think the good news here is that we know they can be much, much better, based just on what we have seen through seven games.

Also, I was happy to see how nicely Valimaki bounced back last night after his worst game ever. Some posters were calling for him to be benched for a few games.

Ryan and Valimaki really impressed me....Raz wasn't far behind.
Boy we got bailed out so so many times last night in that second period.
Gotta be a big confidence builder for the fellas but I hope the coaches make them watch the 2nd period and tell them NOT to forget.
25 has to tell his team mates this CANNOT continue. They keep talking accountability so come on ....do it.
19 played a very poor game....something needs to change with him.
Glad for the W.
