I think I'd rather a 2nd round pick than a project. Bennett is still an NHL player and has potential. If you can't get a 2nd then I'm not sure hes worth trading unless he's really that unhappy.

It might not be the worst idea to give Sam a shot on LW, with JG on RW.
We know Sam can't handle RW, but that gives JG more looks on his off wing like last night's snipe. It also might encourage him to try less of those goal line shots that just rim out of the zone anyway.
Dump ins would need to be in LW corner to be effective though.

Have to get there first.
Now that this is public, this team will face questions daily about it. You cannot have a malcontent in a dressing room for very long before it starts to have a real effect on the whole squad.
This is a case of "the sooner the better" now.
I just dont think BT gets much of anything for him being he is an RFA at seasons end and requiring a 2.5M+ qualifying offer to any club that may want him as a reclamation project.
Maybe give it a couple weeks and hope some team runs into injury trouble, but beyond that, it is time to end this failed experiment.

I'd toss a 2nd/3rd at him if he was on another team.

He was nearly a point-per-game in the playoffs and tied for the lead in scoring with Monahan. Gotta be worth something.

Yeah, probably wishful thinking on my part. I’m with you that they might as well keep him for one last playoff run. I wouldn’t trade him for a pick right now , only because that means Nordstrom would be a full time player . If an injury occurs ( which it will) then we are down to the Rinaldos playing full time.

It depends on how you read:
"There was a rumor going around (Saturday) morning that Bennett might want a change of scenery, and I did call his agent, Darren Ferris, who said, 'Yes, that's true, he would like it to be considered,'" Friedman reported on the latest edition of "Saturday Headlines."
That doesn't scream that he will cause issues. His leash is short contract wise as well. He will play nice or he doesn't get qualified and gets a league min contract somewhere.
I am also not too worried about finishing 4th in the North division.

You're not getting a second round pick for Sam Bennett. Target a 4th and be happy with anything you can get. That $2.55M cap hit is going to make most teams head in the other direction. Bennett will likely be considered a rental and not going to garner much interest. The market will be small and the return will be underwhelming. A draft pick would be nice, but expect a contract back that also has significant warts.

IMO, the last time Bennett got consistent quality top-six minutes Hartley was coach. Back when "always earned, never given" meant something. Honestly don't think there's anything Bennett can do now to get out of the basement with this organization, so not surprised by this development at all.

And he will be paid, primarily, on what he does in the regular season.
So that 10 game stretch will be obliterated by his 8 pt pace in a 56 game season or his career pace of 28 pts in an 82 game season.
Tack on the money needed to qualify him beyond this year and...yeah....not worth a lot.

Not saying HE will cause issues but the fact this is all out there now will be a problem for everyone.
Its the same as when a player says they dont want to talk about contract extension beyond season start. It becomes a distraction for the whole team to be asked about it all year long and takes away from their focus.
This is nothing new.

The Flames notwithstanding, there are GMs that build teams for playoff success. And I doubt Bennett has gone unnoticed there.

And none of those GM's carry guys for 82 games and a chunk of their salary cap just so those guys can play in the playoffs.
Again....he may or may not go off in the post season once again. No one knows but chances are good he will be at least better than his regular season self.
However he still has to be a contributor to actually get the team there.

Powerplay Quarterback

And that's the answer to the "How come he plays with plugs and they put Leivo or Simon on the top line?".
It's because the coaches are sick of Bennett's play-killing and penalty-taking. You can't give the guy more ice time because you can't spend more time on the PK. Same reason you don't throw Lucic over the boards for 30 minutes a night.
Same exact reason Lucic is on the 4th line is why Bennett is too.
I'm sure he asked for a trade last year, I'm sure he's dead sick of Calgary. Who wouldn't be in his place? But that doesn't change the fact that his hockey IQ is not high enough to be a top 6 NHL regular season guy. Playoff hockey is different, and he's more useful and productive there because of it. But other guys change their game for the playoffs, and Bennett has to as well.
So he'll go to whichever team feels strongly about a reclamation, and he'll play a ton of minutes for about a week, and then find himself on the 3rd line again.

The Calgary media seems awfully easy going. I don’t see the Flames getting bombarded about a bottom roster player who wants a trade. And we don’t know if he’s a malcontent either necessarily.
In any case he’s not worth that much so I just don’t see this as big news nor should it have much of an impact on the team IMO. Trading Sam Bennett shouldn’t be at the top of BT’s list for improving this team.

Tough time to make a trade. With tight cap and quarantine. Might have to keep his chin up and just play out till Seattle can take him.

Yet the story broke nationally on the single biggest viewership night of the week.
This is not a local story anymore. They are going to be asked about it no matter where they play.
Well we know he is not content here, because he wants to go somewhere else....so how can he not be malcontent?
I am not saying he will be raising hell in practice or moping about the locker room. I am saying media, everywhere, wont let this go until its resolved one way or the other.
