Small correction: HAS been hiring exclusively since letting Darryl quit coaching and do GM'ng.

THIS.
Sooooooo this.
Won't be easy though. Letting go the son of a very very very rich and infuential Canadian icon. Then yeah, you gotta undo the No Movement clauses he slammed us with.
They're in deep. Real deep.
All the same, seems inevitable.

This would certainly be the most Calgary Flames thing to do.

Now is not the time to blow it up.
We have Jacob Markstrom. For the next six years, we actually do have a player capable of winning a round or two on his own.
Now, we get to build a team that isn’t constructed specifically to account for not having reliable goaltending. That’s the only reason to pay what we paid for Hamonic - they thought they could out-defend bad net minding, and that’s impossible.
There’s lots to work with. Maybe we do need to trade Gaudreau. Maybe we could try giving him an elite HC to work with instead of Rube 5. I don’t know.
But blowing it up is not the answer. They didn’t spend $36M on a goalie to put a bunch of children in front of him.

I suspect the reason the Flames are struggling is because the coach is trying to implement a new system. Having a team meeting it's just communication. That is a good thing because the players need to be on the same page. It also means they care and this allows then to reinforce some of the details that makes them successful. Probably lots of encouragement and support for one another goes on at the meetings. Not sure how much a player gets paid really factors in when the outcome is to refocus. These guys are good players they are probably just missing some assignments and need to get on the same page. It happens!

Wow.
Pretty early in the season no?
Usually this thread shows up about 20 games in. I guess it’s the shortened season.

This is just not what’s coached at the higher levels. They say to get a stick on it 100% of the time. It’s a percentage game.

LOL, no, you obviously don't know me.
I want to win a championship. That's it. And if the team that is assembled isn't going to get it done you need to find a way to do it. Tweak it, blow it up, rebuild, whatever. Just do something that puts you on the path to being a true contender. I personally don't see players like JG and SM leading this team anywhere close to a championship. So IMO they need to figure out how to change things. I'm actually not even advocating a true 'blow it up' scenario, even lateral moves that can change the identity of the team would be welcome. Keeping the two mentioned above with some minor tweaks and hoping things suddenly change just seems like a waste of time to me.

Getting rid of leadership that doesn’t lead is fine. Blowing up is just no guarantee of success.

I think it would be Conroy who they have been grooming for a decade.

This isn't a new season to the "blow it up crowd". It's the same season over and over again, like Groundhog Day. That's the issue.

It's BT's team and I worry this is the best he can do. I think he's painted himself into a corner. What moves are left that'll significantly improve the team? I think BT is screwed and it shows in our RWs and 4th line.

A real hockey trade with Gaudreau could have helped change the makeup and culture of the team. That ship sailed before last offseason though. And that trade is easier said than done. Though you'd think you could have got a haul fresh after his 99 point season.

“Stick on puck” is a universally approved and encouraged defensive principle, taught to defenders by educated coaches, around the world.

Except then you’re trading a 25 year old 99 point forward signed for 3 years at $6.75M.
Tough sell.

Generally, yes. Blocking passing lanes, absolutely, close checking, yes
Clear shots from the point? Get the #### out of the way
Goalies want their D to give them the shot sometimes. And D are taught not to screen their goalies too

If this was even remotely true in the slightest way, absolutely we'd keep going.
But there isn't a goalie in existence anywhere, and never has been where this holds water.
Using poor past decisions to make even worse future decisions is never the answer.
This is a young man's game. Maybe we'd play it better if we had a few of them.
