Tennesse and Baltimore are example where it works in the NFL . But you have to commit

A tough team can succeed , but that has to be your identity . Your build your team around an identity.

This is where Calgary fails . The one time we had an identity for half a season - fast , chance taking , capitalize on turnovers , erratic - we were in first

Then the coach complained they didn’t play enough D or structured and we started dumping and locking the neutral zone

This is a flawed team. But almost every team is flawed

You have to play to your strengths and build over a 5 year period

The Flames trying to play tough would be like the Ravens trying to be a passing team.

Bieksa is smarter than his open mouth breathing indicates. He is bang on.

We don’t have to be tough. But we need some direction towards having an identity. I don’t see that. Gio is tired. Tkatchuk is important but I don’t see him as the leader. We need another piece.

Is it possible to disagree with him on what type of identity he likes/wants to see but agree with the premise the Flame's don't have one?

That's where I would be. I don't really agree the Flames need to be a tough/physical team, but I do have a tough time defining what this team is or wants to be under Ward. You see a little bit of everything in their game but nothing consistent in terms of how they want to play the game.

I agree that Bieksa isn't entirely wrong, but his take is so generic that it can be applied to almost every team.

It's like saying, "<Struggling Team> is struggling because they don't score enough and let in too many goals."

Yeah, thanks Kojak.

The guys said it this morning on the radio and its absolutely true.

The identity of this team? This teams identity is inconsistency. Even in our wins we are inconsistent.

World beaters on Tuesday, disinterested unmotivated by Thursday. I don't think this team will have any sustained success regardless of talent.

You look at this roster up and down. Have a look at the top 9 (From last night) in no particular order:

Tkachuk, Lindholm, Leivo, Gaudreau, Monahan, Simon, Bennett, Backlund, Mangiapane.

As an opponent who exactly are you afraid of here? When you see this team coming up on the roster I can't see any team thinking they are in for a tough night. By my eyes there is only 1 player in that list that gives a #$%^ all the time and a couple that give a $%^& sometimes sprinkled in with a bunch that don't seem to give a #$%^ ever. Maybe its just perception but you look how that game rolled out last night how can anyone think otherwise? They showed a shot of the bench and I think it was the third, they entire team looked disinterested. No talking, no motivating just deer in headlights. I know its only a snapshot of a moment in time but good riddance.

Move onto the blueline:

Gio, Andersson, Hanifin, Tanev.

Not a lot to fear here. Maybe Tanev is a little difficult to play against and sure Andersson is fiery but nobody remotely intimidating. Heck, even our 5/6 is pedestrian. I hate to say it but we are all thinking it. What exactly is Mark Giordano now? I think we all the know the answer but does the organization?

Sure its early in the season and maybe are just flat for 3 games but yikes. Pretty disheartening week here as a Flames fan.

What would it take to get Tkachuk out of Ottawa? Imagine the two brothers together I'd imagine that would give some teams nightmares.

Brady Tkachuk is untouchable. The only chance of him moving is on a RFA offersheet.

What's the likelihood of Ottawa trading Tkachuk for Bennett?

Gaudreau with under 2 years of controllable contract remaining, not sure the return is going to be much at this point.

Flames don't have the assets to acquire a top line player at that age imo

Better chance of Matthew being traded to the Sens than the other way around.

I don’t know....

I’ve read some rumours about the Ottawa Senators being traded to Austin Matthew’s in a poker game with Eugene Melynk.

Total hypothetical, but if Ottawa offered us Stuzle for Tkachuk, would we entertain it?

No. We need more grit not less. Not to mention Tkachuk is proven, Stutzle is not.

Tkachuk is a proven play-off non-performer and a guy that has issues keeping on his game when faced with distractions. I wouldn't say yes either, but that's a pretty good start on what you'd be looking back for Tkachuk

Little early to call him a known playoff non-performer.
