I agree the team under performs after one of his controversies, but that is on this current team.
If we bring in some more pests and try to make that the identity of this team at least its an identity versus what we have right now.
The ducks were good at doing so much outlandish antics that the refs couldn't possible call every single one a penalty becuase they would be penalized all game. At least it would be entertaining to watch.
I know this probably isn't the answer, but Lord is this current team hard to watch some times. The media is playing it out like we are the bad guys in the Division because of Tkachuk and the players aren't using that for motivation to win, so let's bring in some guys who would thrive on that. Easier said than done I suppose though.
I think it's about bringing more players in who are committed to doing what is required.
With Tkachuk what I like is:
- His compete level
- His desire to drag his team mates into that competition
- His overall combo of skill and grit
What I dislike is:
- When his own behaviours make him less effective as a skilled player
- Sometimes the stuff he does is pretty silly
- Needs more consistent production
- How his behaviours can really wake up the competition
He's got to pick his spots better sometimes.

I agree 100% with everything here.

Is this team suffering from Sven Baertschi syndrome? Sven comes in on an emergency recall when he was absolutely lighting up the Dub and scores 3 goals in 5 games.
Year 2 in the rebuild the Flames got a lot of luck and played with a lot of heart and were extremely lucky to face a Canucks team who really shouldn’t have made the playoffs either and had a lucky season themselves. Gaudreau and Monahan put the team on their back when Gio went down and Hudler had the season of his life.
World Cup before Johnny signed his deal had myself and many feeling like he could be a top 3-5 player in the league. Amazing rookie season and then 6th in scoring as a sophomore. Looked as good as McDavid, MacKinnon, etc during that tournament.
After the big Hamilton blockbuster that brought in Lindholm and Hanifin we have 5 players who scored over 70pts and they finish 2nd overall in the league.
People can sit on their couches and call Treliving a brutal GM but this team has teased us enough to be patient and show they are capable of being a top team.
Where we sit today Gaudreau is a great first line talent but not a franchise player. Monahan was on his way to being a two way top end center and he has turned into a solid goal scoring, poor defensive player who despite his size doesn’t play big.
The fact the team kept trying to speed up the rebuild by moving picks for Smith, Lazar, Hamonic (absolute brutal move in hindsight) Elliott etc proved to be just plain bad moves that got the team no further than the first round.
Mistakes and shortcuts were taken and the team hasn’t developed like many thought they would. Hard ass coach to soft coach has happened 4 times since the rebuild began. Neither works but the hard ass seemed to get more (Hartley series win, Peter’s division win).
I am all for reading picks when the flames get back a proven top 4 Dman who is 22 like they did with Hamilton but making the moves for older guys with less term like Elliott, Smith and Hamonic were bad moves. Even if we want to nitpick more the 15th pick in 2015 could have been Barzal who would have been the franchise center we needed. At the time though having Monahan+Bennett had us looking set for a decade.
I think our ownership group wants results immediately. Feaster joked that in year one of the rebuild they wanted to be a playoff team. Making it in 2015 I wouldn’t be surprised if the message was to do it again right away which is why the Hamilton deal made sense. When they drafted 6 in 2016 I wouldn’t be surprised if ownership told Burke and Tree that this better be the last top 10 pick.
Unlike some on here who are ready to jump off the bridge I am going to wait until the offseason to choose which side of the rebuild/go for it side of the fence I am on

This team knows how to put just enough effort in to make it look like they almost pulled out a W, enough to keep that little bit of hope in the fanbase simmering at the surface. A missed chance here, a bad bounce there and it would have been closer! It’s the same players, the same core, the same effort. The bulk of the minutes are Johnny, Monahan, Backlund, Tkachuk and Gio. We know what this team is, there is no mystery, they’re not all of a sudden going to flip a switch and be like “oh right this is how to win!”. They’re a mid tier team with a flawed construction, no top end talent down the middle, and our best players are very slow.
Sounds like the GM " I almost pulled off a trade to make the team better." This team needs a coach like Hartley or at least someone that isnt a push over powder puff and can get these guys to play 60 minutes and knows when to double shift a line and when the 4th line should actually go out, etc. I think this team has more to give but its being held back by bad coaching. Too be fair maybe it needs to come from the room since players just ask for trades now rather than taking criticism from the coach.

I watched the last 2 games and honestly I was so turned off by this team that I don't really care to watch another, I honestly can't believe they hired ward for head coach

I agree. Alot is made about finally having a proper pest on our team. However, when looking at body of work, I think of Doughty and Kassian, and I am not sure the impact is as big as it is made out.
After the Doughty hit and feud, Tkachuk was an ineffective player for like a month.
Kassian and the Oilers actually smashed the Flames the next game after that whole thing.
I love MT, but he is a much better player when he is focused on hockey. Also enough with the attempted toe drags this year.
The Flames won the game after the Kassian thing...and won that game because of it.
People have commented here about how Tkachuk is better when he sticks to hockey, and, I agree that he is a great hockey player.
But that "other stuff" that he does, it's a calculated part of this game. He gets under people's skin and throws them off.
A recent example is in the Vancouver game where Myers punched him in the face after the whistle, and got a penalty. The Flames' deadly powerplay eventually went on to score 5-on-3. That frustrated punch didn't just come from a few seconds of misjudgement by Myers... I'm willing to bet that Tkachuk had been chirping or being a pest all game prior to that and it boiled over. I'm sure there are many other examples; and it's part of the complete package of what makes him a good player.

Maybe
But it also seems to motivate them
And sometimes it seems to throw himself off.

Yeah I agree.
There is no obvious successor to Gio at this stage.
Which is telling.
If you had to replace him TODAY (let's say he retired) it would probably be Tanev.
In the long-run, Dillon Dube might actually be the guy.

A scorched earth rebuild doesn't guarantee anything either.
We could finish last place for two straight seasons and lose the draft lottery and pick #3 and #6 or something.
We could miss on a pick. I don't want to pick on Sam but that pick didn't work out. And at the time he was the guy that was going to be the next franchise player. Remember some people (especially me) were worried that we would have to "settle" for Draisaitl because Edmonton might take Bennett?
There is a lot of luck involved with this stuff and unfortunately the Calgary Flames never have any.
