Vegas, the league's top UFA destination. I have my doubts that Taffoli picks Calgary over Montreal or the countless other teams offering contracts.

I want nothing to do with Virtanen. I also would not want to face playoff Bennett in a series. I would be trading him out east.

Domi was a valuable asset, Calgary didn't have an equivalent RFA or anything close

Virtanen's pace is way better than Bennett's at the NHL level and he's two months younger.
If Virtanen had played 370 games, based on his current pace he would have

65 goals 58 assists for 123 points. You lose a bit of offense, a bit of physical play, and a lot of playoff heart and performance but Virtanen is 2 months younger.

It’s true, as I said above.

Gotta round up, 66 goals. But it's more that he actually fits positionally and potentially adds to the top 6. He also had almost 20 goals just last season, and shown growth thorughout his career. Bennett has shown the exact opposite.

Last 2 seasons (not including this one):
Bennett 123 games 21 Goals 18 assists 39 points -7
Virtanen 139 games 33 Goals 28 Assists 61 points -8

One of these players is growing.

I may be off base, but Virtanen doesn't strike me as a good bet. He screams Mason Raymond to me - someone who due to a lack of depth on a team, plays higher up in the lineup and accumulates more points because of it.

I hear stuff like "Bennett has no hockey IQ" - which I disagree with actually, and it shows often at both ends of the rink. However, for those that feel that Bennett doesn't think the game very well, just ask a Canuck fan about how Virtanen thinks the game, or what his commitment level is.

If the Flames are trading Bennett, I would much rather it be in a package for something good, rather than a 1for1 trade for something that you know just won't work out.

We already got that from Vancouver. It’s Josh Leivo

Any team that has Sam Bennett on it is likely to be on the bubble of making the playoffs and then dispatched early. There is nothing to fear about Sam Bennett except Trelving's undying affection for him.

To be fair to Mason Raymond - he scored 25 goals at one point. Something the rest of these guys probably will never do.

I had no idea Sam Bennett was the worst player in the league.

I’d be a lot more concerned about his commitment than hockey IQ. I think if the Flames tried for him it would be because they wanted exactly what he can do - skate fast, accept a pass from a higher IQ guy and shoot the puck hard, and not think a whole lot. He’s faster and bigger than Bennett, shoots the puck better, but I’d agree it’s a sideways move skill wise.

I think if they did it it would be to make the lines make more sense:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Dube
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Mangiapane
Leivo/Lucic-Backlund-Virtanen
Lucic-Ryan-Leivo/Simon/Nordstrom

But if he tends to be out of shape, no thanks.

You don't see this as stepping into an oddly personal place?

Bubble players between the third and fourth line generally don't seal the fate of a hockey team on their own.

They can have Leivo back for Virtanen. Honestly, that’s all I’d be willing to give up for him.

Is this supposed to be clever?

There is only one (1) team with him on it.

So if that is the fate of the team, then you can substitute the name of any of his teammates, and the statement has the exact same meaning

Profound

Hopefully it's nothing but we might have more postponed games.

Vitranen is a notorious floater. If we didnt already have that in spades I would say sure but we are not in the position to add another player who floats in the neutral zone.
