Now that the first round is done, how do you think you did?? Do you regret taking the guy you did? Are you happy with who you got?? Do you think you know more then the guys in the NHL?

I'm pretty happy to get the #9 pick, Brian Lee with my first pick in the Second round. So far I'd say that was the steal of the CPHL draft.

Matt Niskanen, CPHL 4th round NHL 1st round. good steal

Sabres had four first rounders in the NHL draft (McArdle, Rask, Cogliano, Niskanen)

Bolts didnt fare too well... My strategy of picking top ranked Russians seems to have backfired a bit. There were questions if the new CBA had something to do with this.... Anyone have any insight??

Well this is basically heralded as the worst cohort of Russian players in recent memory. Even if the CBA was like the previous one, it's likely that you wouldn't have heard any Russians called until like the late 2nd round. Still seeing as the CPHL and NHL have totally different rules in regards to draft rights, I can see the CPHL and NHL draft being quite different in the future. NHL teams will draft who they can sign in 2 years, and probably wait a couple years to see which Europeans they can convince to come to North America and start looking to free agency to aquire rights. Whereas in the CPHL the CBA still allows you to draft the best players and wait for them to make the NHL. Still Fantasy GM's are likely to adjust their styles to emulate what NHL GM's do.

I did craptacular...

Radek Smolenak CPHL - #31, NHL - #73
Sergei Shirokov CPHL - #46, NHL - Not Drafted
Tomas Kudelka CPHL - #48, NHL - #136
Nathan Davis CPHL - #76, NHL - #113
Jason Matsumoto CPHL - #113, NHL - Not Drafted

That is what I get for using the Hockey News for my main reference.

Lets not do this again next season.

Wild had a good and bad day with a mix of OK, good and bad picks.

The Bad

Marek Vapil CPHL #90 NHL: 163 (still think this one is a sleeper though)
Colton Yellowhorn CPHL #108 NHL: Not Drafted
Paul Szczechura CPHL #143 NHL: Not Drafted

The OK

Marek Zagrapan, CPHL# 9, NHL: 13

The Good

Dustin Kohn CPHL: 65, NHL: 46 (Wild have since traded Kohn)

Taylor Chorney CPHL: 92, NHL: 36

Kris Letang CPHL: 106, NHL: 62

Jonathan Sigalet CPH #132 NHL: #100
- Interesting note about this one is that the NHL Bruins now own the rights to both Sigalet brothers (Jon and goalie Jordan), and the CPHL Wild also own both Sigalets.

With the NHL draft concluding and the CPHL GM’s researching their picks to see how their drafting skills ended up scoring with the NHL scouts, I can’t help but to look into my own Hurricanes picks. Coming out of the CPHL draft I was really excited about the players rights now owned by the Hurricanes, now that the NHL draft has ended I’m absolutely thrilled about the boys I was able to come way with.

Gillaume Latendresse CPHL (6th) NHL (45th)
Outside of Skidney there’s no player in this years draft I would rather have. I’m excited as hell to have Gillaume on my roster. I knew when trading up in the draft to pick him that I would be going off the chart, but I never thought by this much I’ll admit. I was hoping that he would fall to 26th but what can you do. One of the great things though is after he leads the Q in scoring next season, with a little luck he’ll be playing in my hometown and I might get a chance to get a real good look at my franchise player.

Michael Blunden CPHL (24th) NHL (43rd)
Before getting the call from the Jets, Blunden was the guy I had slated as the Hurricanes 1st pick in the draft. Very much like my 29th pick last year of Bruce Graham, I drafted a guy that in the future I would really hope is on my team, a guy you would hate to try an acquire. I don’t see him with the upside of other CPHL 1st round picks but I see him as a 3rd line guy in the NHL and picking a NHL player that late in the 1st round is considered successful in my eyes.

Anton Skorykh CPHL (79th) NHL (Not Drafted)
I don’t know why I drafted this guy, but hey, I only had three guys on my list.

Vladmir Sobotka CPHL (81st) NHL (106th)
Once again like my first 3rd round pick I selected a European that I thought had more upside then current value. It was more of a free pick as I really had my eyes on a guy I was hoping would still be around for my 4th round pick.

Brett Sutter CPHL (99th) NHL (179th)
I took everything I had to hold off in the 3rd round with Brett and by the time my pick came around in the 4th I wasn’t risking letting him slide another round. This pick falls in the category with Dylan Hunter (whom I was lucky enough to sign before even being drafted by the NHL Sabers). As a team in the CPHL we’re able to carry 39 non-CPHL players, many of which were never see the AHL never mind the NHL. With saying that there has to be a couple spots for us GM’s to pick with our hearts after all this is a fantasy league. The fact that I can look down and see that both Dale and Darryl’s sons in my organization makes this league fun for me.

Derek Joslin CPHL (136th) NHL (149th)
I was just drafting by position and looking for a rearguard that had more upside as I’m pretty weak with Defence prospects.

Gord Baldwin CPHL (153rd) NHL (69th)
The only Hurricane that was drafted higher in the NHL then the CPHL and that really brings out a smile for me.

Conclusion
I headed into the draft hoping to get one of three players (Latendresse, Blunden, Sutter) and I was able to get all three. As it ends up I may have picked them a little ahead of what they ended up being picked in the NHL but in the end all that matters is that you get the guys you want, and I did with all three. Both Baldwin and Joslin can turn out being a wonderful gift that I never expected. I don’t think I came out of the draft with high trading assets fantasy league wise, but for the first time since taking over this team from Beerfund, I really think that this team is now starting to take on the personality of it’s GM and it’s starting with the ECHL.... so I'm a little slow

I'm open to criticism or comments

HannaSniper,

as per russian youth coach, Skorykh was ranked top 10 among euros in winter, but failed to even crack russian roster for youth world cup. In latest tournament in Czech coaches were hoping for him to shine, but "Skorykh was not even remotely as good as we were hoping he will"

as per the same source, best russian prospect among these draftees is Zubov, with Sopin and Buravchikov 2nd and 3rd. Highly touted guys like Istomin and Krysanov were horrible lately.

Well I finallly got down to checking the who's who of the draft and the Flyers didn't do two bad. With 12 picks in the CPHL draft, 10 of my players were drafted into the NHL.

Brian Lee CPHL #38-NHL #9 Ott
Tyler Plante CPHL #75-NHL #32 Fla
Simon Bolduc CPHL #82- NHL N/D
Marc Andre Gragnani CPHL# 85-NHL #78 Buf
Vladmir Mihalik CPHL #94-NHL #30 TB
Jordan Lavallee CPHL #100-NHL #116 ATL
Stanislav Lascek CPHL #114-NHL #133 TB
Patrick Hersley CPHL#115-NHL #139 LA
Vitaly Anikeyenko CPHL #129-NHL #70 Ott
Tom Wandell CPHL #131-NHL 146 Dal
Ryan Wilson CPHL #139-NHL N/D
Matt Keetley CPHL #158-NHL #158 Cal.....Wow...Karma or what???

Bigest jump was 64 spots by Mihalik, basically giving the Flyers 2 first round picks in a draft where we didn't have any. Boy the Hawks are gonna be p*ssed about that one

One way to size up the Pens Drafting was :doo:

Although I will not rate the drafting untila couple years down the road when the
players develop, judging by NHL standards the Pens drafting was subpar at best.

Chris Durand #25 CPHL, #52 NHL...Of the 5 mock drafts I viewed 3 had him in the 1st round(2 in the top 20) and the other 2 early 2nd so I was surprised to see him go so late in teh NHL draft.
Jakub Vojta #26 CPHL, #94 NHL Everything I read on this blueliner was promising. I think he will turn out to be a lot better then most people expect.
Dan Ryder #32 CPHL, #74 NHL I knew I took Dan early but I thought he was going to be drafted early to mid second round. He is now property of the Flames which helps his CPHL value for sure. :P
Jeff May #80 CPHL, #151 NHL ISS had May ranked as high as 40 in teh final rankings, but May slipped all the way to 151. The Pens still have hope that May will make the CPHL in the future.
Marek Bartanus#88 CPHL, #92 NHL The only player who the Pens drafted that went close to that spot in the NHL.

Overall if we go by the NHL then the Pens picks in this years CPHL draft were horrible, however it will take at least 2 years before we see who were really the winners of the 2005 draft.

Kinda weird, 15 years later I randomly turned on TV, happened upon a game where Shirokov was playing, and recalled this post.
