if Chevy shops Laine around, does he get a better player back than PLD?
I doubt it.

Both clubs were in unenviable positions. Shuffle the deckchairs and see what happens.

Was that it? I wasn't following the situation so I didn't know if he had a beef with coaches or other players.

I just have a hard time believing the Jets had to, or agreed to, retain that much salary.

Kind of a shuffling of the deck chairs trade. Both teams unloaded disgruntled players and both ended up receiving players that will probably not be long for their new markets. I think the Jackets come out ahead as they get the more gifted player that will score more goals and they get a decent player in Roslovic who has good wheels and hands. Not sure this moves the needle much for either franchise but at least they solved short term problems.

Will be interesting to see how this shakes out on a couple years. I'm not so sure Winnipeg lost.

It doesn't really impact them at all though.

Yeah, if you accept Laine for PLD as even, it seems like retaining salary and adding Roslovic should net more than a 3rd rounder.
I have to assume that both teams see PLD as being a more impactful player, but that doesn't seem obvious.
Also, why are people so sure that Laine won't want to stay in Columbus long term? Did he make some comments that suggest that is the case? After Winterpig, he knows that things can always get worse. I also can't see him wanting to play in a warm city because I don't think they make an SPF high enough for someone as white as he is.

I think there are two things that will decide whether he stays in Columbus or not:
1) guys who can feed him the puck
2) a nice big fat juicy new contract (like $9M minimum)
are either of those things going to happen?

If one of the teams can ink a contract long term including several UFA years than that is where the trade is won.
I doubt both teams achieve such. Too much selfishness and entitlement from both players for such loyalty.
Will be interesting if both move on first chance they have as UFAs. That would be my guess.
Jets do get one more year of RFA control from PLD before he reaches 27.

What are the odds that one of these two players ends up playing for the Rangers when they hit free agency? It seems like a lot of the "I'm too good for this market" players always end up a Ranger.

I also think that because Laine broke into the NHL as an 18 year old, he is eligible to become UFA by 25. I think it's age 27 or 7 seasons, whatever comes first.

Trade couldn't happen without it.
Even with the retainment Columbus is already over the cap will have to do some juggling or leave Laine on the IR, Plus the owners probably wouldn't eat the extra cash considering in real $$$ this season Laine makes $7.5m and now Roslovic $1.3m, Dubois only makes $3.35 in real money.

Both GMs were in a tough spot.
It is conceivable that the only component of this trade that sticks with either team long term is the draft pick and even that could move on to greener pastures.

If you can trade a disgruntled player to the worst destination city in the league after your own AND John Tortorella coaches that team AND you get a bonafide #2C as the return...
Could do a lot worse.

I’m lead to believe this actually is what PLD was wishing for.

They've been speculating on 31 Thoughts for a couple weeks that "there's something more to the Dubois story than we know".
On this most recent episode Marek confirmed that a source that wished to remain anonymous said there's definitely something else about the situation other than Dubois/Tortorella and Dubois/Columbus.
With the talk of the QAnon / Trumpers on the team, I do wonder if that's what the issue is. I'm sure that sort of conspiracy BS would get really old really fast in a locker room, and those sort of people aren't exactly quiet or subtle with their beliefs either.
If so, then it coming from their 2 mainstays in Werenski and Jones has got to be especially problematic.
