No matter who won this trade, the team that lost the trade is Calgary. We had an opportunity to get a young game breaking center. The type of player with speed and strength that really succeeded with Panarin and I think would have exploded with Johnny. Columbus needed a C and still ended going with a winger. I don't know what Tre offered but he really missed it on this.

Really interesting trade.
First, I am REALLY happy that Treliving didn't 'beat' WPG's offer, because Laine + Roslovic is way too much.. However, it makes sense from WPG's perspective, because they move two guys that they are having trouble negotiating with. TO them, Roslovic is gone, and with Laine, it was only a matter of time as well.
So they turn 2 malcontents into a strong young C. IT's actually a great trade from their perspective.
For Columbus, turning an unhappy player into Laine and Roslovic is a huge win. No one else was going to offer them more than that. In the end, they lose the player who will most likely turn out to be the best player long term. And their salary cap is going to feel the brunt of this.
I think Columbus loses the trade, but does better with this package than they were going to get anywhere else (so that is a win in itself).
In the end, the trade makes sense for both sides. I am REALLY happy that Treliving didn't submit a better bid than that.

Would you have offered Tkachuk?
Because that’s the only equivalent to Laine

Would you have moved Tkachuk?
Because with Laine on the table that’s what it likely would have taken to outbid Winnipeg.

Agree. After reading dissentowner comment I did a quick google search and found 6 articles on how hard he works in the offseason to get stronger and quicker at getting his shot off. One article listed a bunch of Fin players listing their main workout and very few of them listed on-ice stuff, mostly shooting, explosion work, etc.

You talk about ceilings and upside I think Laine definitely is the superior asset but Dubois does play the more important position and with Schiefele forms one of the best 1-2 center combos in the league.
Trade makes sense in the fact these players are the same age, similar pedigree and both wanted out of their situations. It is funny though that these are 2 of the least desirable markets in the league and there are chances these players will be pushing their way out again sooner than later

With the cost being what it is I don't think the Flames missed out on anything.

That game breaking centre’s best season would be the 5th best season of Sean Monahan’s career.
So, there’s that.

Laine will be a big trade chip for Columbus at some point... I think Laine could be happy in Calgary and we do need a right winger. I can dream

Laine was upset play on a line with Little and Ehlers in 2018-19 ... In Columbus he could end up with Rosolvic as his centre.
Now that PLD is gone Torts is looking at benching Domi.

Don't kid yourself. Laine was upset because Winnipeg. He's just too polite to say publicly what every one of us thinks.

Maybe Tortorella can push the right buttons. You never know with these things. I feel players have a respect for Tortorella after awhile, unlike say Babcock for example.

I wonder what a Laine deadline trade would cost. Dube and a late 1st?

What was the return in the Hall trade last season? I think that would be the framework.
