Dang. Was almost more excited for Brantley. Dude is an ultimate pro and has less of that astros stink on him.
Someone ####ed up somewhere for this to be leaked that bad. And good on Brantley/agent for then leveraging into a deal with Houston.

With Guerriel - Springer - Hernandez in the outfield, Brantley only offers so much incremental improvement anyway. They will get a lot more bang for the buck spending it on starting pitching

Two year deal for Brantley is perfect for Astros. I expected between $30 and $35 million and it comes in at $32. I’m curious what the Jays three year offer was.
Astros also have a DH in Yordan Alvarez who is incredible but hampered by bad knees.
Rather strange how it played out.

We've been tricked! We've been backstabbed! And we've quite possibly been bamboozled

The bright side is that the corner outfield is not an area of need, and with 4 legit MLB outfielders as well as Vladdy & Tellez the DH spot isn't a weakness either really.
Don't like how that played out at all, but the team still got much better with the Springer signing, and I highly doubt the Jays are done yet.

The benefit of Brantley would have been that he's a left handed hitter, and the Jays still seem a bit heavy with right handed hitters. Of the current group of regualar impact hitters only Biggio is a lefty, and Tellez is more of a platoon type. So it would have been a nice bonus to get another regular left handed bat into the mix.
I've never looked hard enough into analytics to see if a 315/370/850 slash line is any better than a 240/340/850 one. Brantley has always been a pretty high average hitter, with a good on base, but lower slugging number. So he's a bit of a throwback from the Modern game of Tellez types who get to a 800 OPS number by having a slugging percentage that is double their batting average.

Depending on cost I feel like Tanaka could be an interesting name to look at to shore up the rotation.
Could see them shifting focus to pitching now...or maybe they circle back on Realmuto.

I would take a long look at Didi Gregorius, I almost forgot he was a free agent. LH bat, solid power and defense, low strikeout rate. Bo can shift over to 2B, Biggio moves to 3B.

Baseball America ranked 6 Jays in the top 100 on their latest ranking.
6 in the top 100 is the 2nd most of any MLB team's farm system.
14. Nate Pearson
19. Austin Martin
34. Jordan Groshans
69. Simeon Woods-Richardson
70. Alejandro Kirk
96. Orelvis Martinez
Very impressive considering the youth that is already on the big league roster. I'd imagine Manoah and Moreno aren't that far from the top 100 either.
Have to mention that the Padres have 7 in the top 100 still, which is unbelievable after all the trades they've been making.

They've been getting absolutely phenomenal value for some of their upper-mid level guys. Their system is so deep it makes Mariana blush.

So if I look at who is left out there and what the Jays need my list of free agent targets is:
1.Bauer
2.Gregorius
3.Hand
4.Paxton
5.Wong
A couple of buy low guys I would keep an eye on are Nomar Mazara, still only 26 lots of talent there, if they can get him sorted out like they did with Hernandez it would be a big win. Chris Archer had some of the best stuff in the AL East not that long ago. Julio Teheran, if he is healthy he could be a nice bounce back candidate.

Didi would be a nice add, especially if he's willing to play some 3B. Nice veteran left handed bat, and a strong defensive presence.

Gregorious would be a fun add.
Really hoping we can resign Taijuan Walker too. He had some extremely positive things to say about his time with the Jays recently too.

Bass signs a 2 year deal with the Marlins. I liked him with the Jays last year, hope he does well in Florida.

So just having a peak at the projected rotation:
1. Ryu
2. Ray
3. Pearson
4. Stripling
5. Roark
A crap ton of wild cards in there.
Ryu can struggle with injuries
Ray struggles with control
Pearson has the goods, but is unknown at this point
Stripling coming off a bad season
Roark is trash but will likely eat innings
Then you have depth starters:
6. Chatwood
7. Merryweather (if stretched out)
8. Kay (if stretched out)
9. Hatch
10. Thornton (not sure when he's back)
11. Zeuch
12. Waguespack
Lots of depth, but lots of question marks.
They definitely need to sign or trade for a decent to great starter IMO.
I also wonder if they plan to use a 6 man rotation (at least at times) this season to keep the overall innings down on most of the arms.
Bauer is obviously the top target, but I doubt he even considers TO.
I'm hoping for Paxton personally. I think he'd be a great get.

The Reds have acquired right-hander Hector Perez from the Blue Jays for a player to be named later or cash, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet was among those to report. This move clears a 40-man roster spot for the Blue Jays, who should formally announce outfielder George Springer’s signing soon.

The Yankees just gave 3 prospects for Jameson Tallion from the Pirates.
Seems weird to me that they'd go that route rather than sign Tanaka or Paxton. They must think they can spin their Yankee magic on Tallion I guess.
