That's if Zator comes back. I think he's at the point where if he wants to make a move to England, this is the right time to do it. Boskovic was released by TFC II and I really don't want him here.

So we have Mason Trafford and then nobody else signed at CB? That's got to be next.

I'd agree. Unless Tommy thinks Boskovic's flaws are something he can coach out of him, I'd steer clear and try to find some solid 25-29 year old CBs to play with Trafford (and hopefully Zator). Defenders tend to need a little more time to develop, so I'd opt to keep my youth in other areas if possible.

Looks like Edmonton is getting a UWS franchise. A slow build to a women's domestic league, I'm sure.

Episode 4 of Pinder's interview with Tommy. Tommy says Cavalry are "in the market for a game changer". Sounds like Pasquotti will be back based on this video, but it will depend on his injury recovery.

At the risk of turning this thread into "The Shermanator Show" ™, the league released an update on plans for the 2021 season. The important news; the league is targeting a 28 game season to start on May long season.

Quote:
This year, we will build on the success created by demonstrating our resolve to deliver the 2021 Season that our Supporters and Fans deserve.

We at the League office are working behind the scenes with our Owners, Clubs, Players and Staff to prepare our best year yet. While focused on playing our season, we continue to review multiple scenarios – with the safety of all at the forefront of our competition.

Our plans call for the start of play this Spring – while recognizing that a major factor will be our nation’s progress against this pandemic. Based on where we are right now, if health authorities say it is safe to do so, we are focused on targeting a start date of the Victoria Day long weekend (May 22, 2021) – Canada’s “unofficial start of summer” for a full 28 game season. To that end, we will remain flexible but also adaptable in our planning. To be clear, our ultimate goal is to see our Supporters in the stands as we take to the field!

Hoping by May, with the stadium being outdoors, we can have a few hundred fans at least.

I know someone who works for the team and I've suggested numerous times (in vain, so far!) that they allow only the supporters section in and have us be spread out in the stadium. They've assured me that they have a few contingencies, so hopefully something comes together!

The U21 minutes threshold increasing to 1500 is interesting, but maybe I’m overthinking it. Were there any teams in 2019 that didn’t hit that number?

Edit: just looked it up, looks like Cavalry had the fewest U21 minutes in 2019 but still had 1563, so this rule change shouldn’t really have any noticeable impact

Didn't Forge not hit it but they changed the rules for them? Or am I way off base?

Forge has hit it both years, but they cut it close in PEI. Forced to start a backup keeper for at least one game because a couple of their U21 were injured.

Cavalry have their backup keeper, Tyson Farago. Thought he was really good when he played for Edmonton years ago. Had a pretty bad year with Valour and was cut in training camp last winter. For a backup who's only going to get a few starts, this is a good fit.

I thought that Dylon Powley was going to be our backup when I read he left FCE... guess he might have found a starter job somewhere.

Farago didn't look awful (from the POV of being a backup level keeper) in 2019 (far from Valour's biggest issue that season anyway), so provided that we have some CBs other than Trafford with some quality, I'm sure he'll be fine as a backup.

Powley is looking for more minutes, so a move to Cavalry was never in the cards this year. I know there's mutual interest though.

Zator, Zebie, Northover and Wheeldon won't be returning to the club.

Zator is a huge loss, but he has interest in England. It's either move up or become an accountant. Zebie just doesn't have a spot in the midfield with the acquisition of Di Chiara, and they want to bring back Loturi to use him as one of the U-21 players. Northover and Wheeldon were cheap depth who are pretty old by CPL standards. Really didn't make sense for either of them to stay.

Replacing Zator is key to Cavalry's success in 2021.

Wheeldon sucked anyway. Better Majors CB’s in Calgary.

Losing Zator for no transfer fee and because the league can barely pay minimum wage is a serious concern. 2021 has to be a big growth year, followed by a bump in pay, because I can see a lot of casual fans not sticking around if they see too many players retiring because they can’t afford to stick around. It’s one thing to sell players to other (better) leagues, it’s another to lose them to a day job. Casual fans expect a lesser MLS, not a lesser USL Championship.

Northover was not exactly a star player, but when you see guys like him and Gasparotto walking away to take a pay raise in a 9-5 gig, that looks really bad.

Agreed that Zebie and Wheeldon are not at the Cavalry level (frankly, neither was Northover in 2020), and their departures make sense.
