Anyone’s guess if anything happens on the 20th?

Well, considering the Pentagon just approved 750 active-troops to defend the Capitol, I think the government has a strong indication of possible violent attempts.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/0...ecurity-460203

Most of these troops appear to specialize in neutralizing bombs and detonating devices.

Personally, I hope it's all media hype; I could see nothing happening, thank god if so.

I can't see anything happening right at the Capitol. The security is just too tight.

I could see extremists going after soft targets outside of DC though.

My Dearest Martha,

We have been encamped at the Capitol now for several days, waiting for what we do not know. We count our blessings when we can, such as this morn when the local townsfolk shared with us their meager spread of Red Robin hamburger sandwiches.

Yours always,
Jimmy

I agree re: nothing major in DC on the 20th.

I think the security there, plus the FBI preventive measures and big tech purges will push things underground in the near term. What I think is more likely is one or more Timothy McVeigh type events in the weeks that follow against Federal targets or Democrat State governments.

Basically I think they're going to go more guerilla than army from here on out.

If it all goes smoothly at the inauguration, I'd love to see Biden extrapolate the security measures to the larger issues like the pandemic or even climate change. In a lot of cases, the right level of response is going to look like an overreaction in retrospect. Governments need to be proactive in tackling emergencies whenever possible.
If the US (and other nations) had done the Covid response right, it would have looked like an overreaction, because it would have been a massive response for a disease that results in a much smaller number of deaths.
If combatting climate change is done right, it looks like a massive mobilization and sacrifice, for a threat that never fully materializes (because that massive mobilization and sacrifice is the thing that neutralized the threat).

For a pandemic, would you really want National Guard troops roaming around? I think you'd be hard pressed for majority approval in that situation. Police having the ability to enforce the law would go smoother, I would think.

To your second point, humanity may never realize the negative effects of climate change until it is too late to change anything (feedback loops). A similar effect occurred during the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), where the global temp rose around 5 degrees C. Unfortunately, we are currently emitting multitudes higher of carbon than during PETM.

Yea sorry if the post came off as dismissive, I fully accept the gravity of what happened that day, as well as the horrific acts that resulted in the loss of life of people trying to protect the Capitol. I just found those particular videos to really illuminate just how, well, disorganized and incoherent the collective effort was inside the building. People looking at random papers thinking they might be of use, one guy sitting in Pence’s seat while another person says to not disrespect the VP and get out of the seat (as they cause the VP to evacuate into hiding). They came across as just stupid and impotent once they got inside.

As far as hitting the root problem I’d fund PBS or create a national broadcaster in America with a show or segment on the nightly news disseminating the daily offerings of misinformation from social media as well as the major media outlet.

The fact they're all masked up (including with surgical masks, not just face-hiding masks) indicates they're not the crazies, and their identifications says 'police', and at least on the guy on the far left, the label just above the identifier appears to say 'NY' and then another word I can't read.

edit: That patch with the horse and band looks like US Army Cavalry Division, and the rank insignias are consistent with US Army. Not sure what's up with the police identifier unless that's some sort of identifier issued by the police.

True patriot was going to sell Polosi's stolen laptop to the Russians.

Quote:
A woman who was allegedly part of the mob that stormed Capitol Hill earlier this month may have stolen a laptop from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office and tried to sell it to Russian intelligence. The FBI is investigating the claim from a "former romantic partner" of Pennsylvania woman Riley Williams, who has been charged with disorderly conduct and entering a restricted building.

According to court documents, Williams' supposed ex (identified as W1) contacted an FBI tipline and said she intended to send the laptop "to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service.” W1 claimed to have seen footage of Williams taking a laptop. However, W1 said the plot fell through and that Williams either still has the computer or she has destroyed it.

Pelosi's deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill confirmed that a laptop was stolen from a conference room at the Capitol. However, he said it was only used for presentations.

It also appears Parler is making it's way back to life, hosted in Russia. So, uh, how much personal information did you have to turn over to them to get verified? Feel comfortable Russia has it now, Ted Cruze and others?

The green horse patch is from the 1st Cavalry Division out of Texas. Wonder if they bought Trigger the horse with them? But that's regular army not National Guard.

Can't see the other patches.

These are Guardsmen.

Patch Primer: The left sleeve is for the soldier's current unit patch. If these soldiers were in 1 Cav Div, the patch would be on the left sleeve.

The right sleeve patch is known as the "Combat Patch" and soldiers are authorized to wear the patch of the unit they were with in a combat zone for a specified period of time. For example, if he was with 1 Cav Div in Iraq ten years ago, he can wear their patch now in the NG.

Because there isn't any requirement at this time and better to air on the side of caution (IE, no negligent discharges). The mags are in their pouches. Do they have ammo? Who knows. Probably not.
