Depends what you think they need.

Speed and more scoring off the rush? Maybe Mangiapane

Sandpaper, a guy who can also carry the puck some, can play a heavy game and create some space? Maybe Bennett

Dube is a bit in between and is on an upward trajectory

There have been a few lineups that have been suggested that put Ryan at 4C and have a better top 9.

Or, you could also split them up

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Leivo: I think Tkachuk and Lindholm are the top 200 ft forwards on this team, and I think putting Dube or Mangiapane here is a bit overkill, those players help out lines 2 & 3 more.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Dube: This line needs some speed and tenacity and Dube brings that. The play Dube made on Lindholm's goal is exactly what this line is missing, somebody who can get behind the d-men with speed and win a puck battle in the corner. Having somebody like Dube on this line will keep the defense more honest when playing Gaudreau.

Mangiapane - Backlund - Bennett: They looked good together in the third, might as well keep it going.

Lucic - Ryan - Simon: I could see Ryan and Simon working well together and even though Lucic was bad last night I think he just needs some time to get his legs going.

Edit: Sounds like the lines are the same as they were to start last game. Ridiculous...that 4th line didn't work all night and Simon deserves to get in a game.
This.

Except, I'm done with Looch. Appreciate his playoffs redemption in the summer, but he is really done. He's out, Nordstrom still in. Engage.

??? I thought we were talking about Leivo.

If Lindholm is at C, he's the best RHS forward.

Anything you've suggested is not an improvement.

Further it's not like he played badly last night.

Not an improvement?

So putting guys with full NHL seasons under their belts, and differentiated skills isn’t an improvement over a bubble player?

Lol

Whatever

A few more games of Monaghost and Gaudreauvertime and I’m going with this lineup until Treliving trades one of em out of town.

Mangiapane - Nordstrom - Simon
Dube - Tkachuk - Leivo
Lindholm - Bennett - Backlund
Lucic - Gaudreau - Ryan
Monahan

Seriously, you guys obsess about the lines more than can be healthy. If that energy went into more important things we’d have global warming, disease and income disparity licked.

This would be a likely lineup if Gulutzan were still the head coach.

I'm hoping that Simon and Gawdin get into the lineup. There's no way they can be worse than Lucic and Nordstrom in terms of production.
The games are extremely close. So many of them are going to overtime. The Flames lack superstars and need to roll 4 lines. Therefore, the 4th line needs players that can actually produce. This will be the difference in many games.

And if one player has no offensive abilities whatsoever, it can actually suck the production out of the entire line. If you cause productivity to stagnate, it doesn't matter how physical or defensively sound you are. You're going to be a liability.

Well, if you read anything I wrote, you would know the answer to whatever straw man you are trying to build.

No.

All I read was an indictment of a player after a single game based on essentially nothing.

But you go GF.

Feel free to enlighten me on how Leivo is a top liner, since you are confused

He's not.

My 'troubled' reading of sureloss' post indicates he's on the second line. Or as you probably call it, 1B.

I will go out on a limb and assume you are Leivo’s mom

Ma’am, I don’t think your son has earned a slot on a line with the team’s top offensive duo several years running

He seems like a nice boy

Tkachuk, Lindholm, Dube, Gaudreau, Monahan, Mangiapane, Backlund, Bennett belong in the top 9. Then have Simon or Leivo fill in where needed on the RW. Roll 3 lines equally 5v5. Keep Ryan as 4th line centre with PK duties and limited 5v5. Stick Lucic in the press box if he looks like he did last night, or he can find his legs on the taxi squad.

Also saw that Kent Wilson tweeted Monahan and Gaudreau had the lowest zone start % yesterday, with just 33% Ozone starts. Thats ridiculous and they need to be starting in the Ozone way more. Let our better defensive lines in Lindholm's and Backlund's start in the Dzone more, ideally Backlund.
This is one of the best posts in this thread.

We should be putting our players in a position to succeed.

Bang on about Ozone starts as well as who our top 8 forwards are.

I think Ryan is also one of our top 9-10 forwards depending on how Leivo turns out but he has shown he be effective on the 4th line, is 34 and not a long-term piece.

Tkachuk-Lindholm-Dube
Gaudreau-Monahan-Leivo
Bennett-Backlund-Mangiapane

I actually thought Leivo was skating hard and looked quick out there. I think we should give him more leeway before casting him to the 4th line.

I agree, I thought Leivo looked dangerous (although I did miss some of the second period), and was skating hard. If anything, his linemates looked like they weren't used to his quickness....

.
Ward has a pretty clear system though, all players get to play. Start with line 4, then line 1, then 2, then 3. Repeat that throughout the game. Slightly shorten the bench in the third because the parents who want to win may get mad otherwise. Give everyone orange slices after the game.

Lets give Lucic more than 12 minutes to write him off.

Is he a player that you want on the roster at his ticket? Absolutely not ... but he's been a 50/50 xgf% player for the last five years in a role that has diminished.

Hopefully he bounces back to be a 12 minute a night guy that breaks it even.

If not ... honestly I wonder if his retirement thoughts come up again, like they did last year before Peters moved on. He may just hang them up if he can no longer player at this level (fourth line, popcorn). The game gets a little faster every season, maybe the year over year this off season has pushed him out.
