All I know is I'm super excited to watch the Flames play tonight, and if our success or failure this season is predicated on whether Ryan or Nordstrom is on the 4th line, so many other have things gone terribly, terribly, wrong.

I reckon I'll give Nordstrom a chance to play at least one or two games before I get upset about it on the internet. Hahaha.

Hockey is back baby.

I feel like the Flames should beat Winnipeg, but the 2398 year streak of losing the first game of the year might be too overwhelming.

Are you me? I want to believe, but in my head we're already 0-1.

I still remember that 2009 opening win. We played the Canucks and I was up in the press level (sport chek zone at the time) and it was an exciting game. I also remember a couple of days later going to my first ever BOA in Edmonton. That was a hell of a game as well and far more memorable. Conroy fought Ganger, flames scored almost immediately and after the Oilers battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game and then with less than a minute Khabibuln came out of his net and David Moss was able to chase the puck down and poke it into the open net for the win.

Still 6-0 lifetime in Edmonton (including both games last year)

Just good memories and can’t believe that was more than 11 years ago!

Lol.
Limited viewings? Its not that difficult to watch other teams games, but sure.

"unconcious" bias?

Hmmm....ok. I was out cold when i watched him play the last several years. I guess that makes sense....somehow.

Nordstrom cant kill penalties apparently and all the actual and tangible non-subjective statistics are wrong because fancy stats say so.

Get me a spreadsheet stat!!!

The Flames have set up 4 "pairs" of forwards that just happen to be LW-C pairs:

Tkachuk-Lindholm
Gaudreau-Monahan
Mangiapane-Backlund
Lucic - Bennett

Then the idea is that the RW position will rotate through the lines leveraging Dube, Leivo, Simon, Ryan, and Nordstrom.

Honestly it's an interesting approach and I think we will see a lot of different permutations of moving the RWs around the lineup based on how things are going.
I feel like Dube-Bennett should have been the pair.

They have great chemistry.

Damnit, how did you do that? I edited it before you quoted it!

Anyways, I am bored and work and obviously it is showing in this thread, so don't take my pestering to heart. It's not personal.

No thank you. I'll look for the first little mistake he makes, apply it to the remainder of his Flames tenure and blame a 4th liner for larger failures the team makes.

Nordstrom v. Ryan is a silly argument to begin with but, with no exhibition season, the Flames know what they have in Ryan and maybe want to see Nordstrom in a game. This is as good as any.

Just like the Anaheim curse got old about five years into said curse, this season opener curse is getting old too.

Jets have the better goalie, but Flames have the better team. We should be good to go here.

The Nordstrom vs Ryan debate isn't so clear-cut in my opinion. I do think that the cap hit is what really is driving this at the moment, but perhaps it is also a match-up question. Nordstrom does bring in faster foot-speed and physicality, which makes him a useful forechecker.

The PK difference is moot in my opinion - Ryan has great FO ability, but Nordstrom is quicker and has a longer reach. I think they are both very effective on the PK.

Personally, I am happy that Ryan is out and Nordstrom is in, if only to see what the new guy can do. I really like Ryan and I do feel he really contributes on the Flames - overpaid for his role or not, he contributes. However, if the Flames can save money while experiencing the same level of results, I will be happy too. Tonight we can see how Nordstrom fits in and what he brings to the table as a Flame.

There's a slight difference between simply watching hockey games (very few, if any people on this forum have watched anywhere near enough Bruins games to get a good judgement on Nordstrom) and blindly listening to the "Oh. He played the most PK minutes on the Bruins so he must be good on the PK!" talk and accepting it as fact when stats show he was average at best and no where close to the "Elite PK'er" talk that some are suggesting.

Anyone suggesting having Nordstrom in the lineup over Ryan is beneficial to the Flames is just simply wrong.

The Flames have not won a season-opener in more than a decade. Clearly they are resigned to this fate and have decided to bank a little bit of cap-space instead.

Beneficial to on ice only, or to the team’s situation in general? Cap hit is a real thing, especially if you can save up for later. Especially since Bennett is playing centre and you maybe don’t need Ryan’s skill set and minutes as much.
