Since this is the closest thing to a general American politics thread, I was glad to see this news.
Quote:
President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. plans to name Jaime Harrison as his pick to lead the Democratic National Committee, part of an effort to bolster the committee ahead of what are already expected to be challenging midterm elections for the party, according to two people with knowledge of the selection.
A former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, Mr. Harrison became a national political star last year as he shattered fund-raising records in his race against Senator Lindsey Graham, who was up for re-election.
Jaime is the real deal, and remains the only politician I've ever given money to. I'm glad to see him have an important role in Democratic politics for the next stretch, even if he couldn't unseat that disgusting sycophant, Graham. I hope he runs for something again in the future. He has real potential, especially in the south. Here's hoping he becomes the new Stacey Abrams, but on a national level.
Its hopelessly buried now, on my attempts to find it..but I directly quoted part of a post in here to my buddy who was ranting about the "death of free speech" because of the Trump ban. All I did was point out Twitter is a private company, with a clear Terms of Agreement, its not the government...and he called me a communist hahaha. Then accused me of "probably having a communist Chinese flag in my house". Then started sending me links backing up his point, almost exclusively from Breitbart News. I couldn't believe it!
This is a friend I've known for almost 25 years, and neither of us have ever given a crap about politics in all that time. I don't think I've ever even had a political conversation before with him until this past year, he's just a fun party guy who's kind of a knucklehead and loves to get in one. Just unbelievable how worked up and mobilized people are getting lately, even people you'd never expect. Its scary AF.
It all started purely because he got a kick out of Trump, he just thought he was really funny at first. And it somehow turned into him buying in to all the crap. I guess thats how it starts... Still can't believe thst conversation I just had, things are so crazy these days.

The amount of panic and vitriol from the right over Joe Biden becoming president would be utterly hilarious if it wasn't so damn terrifying.
This guy is as centrist as it gets and these people are freaking out about communism?
It's because sensationalist media (social media) has won. People read about very particular people, saying things out of context and apply it to a group of people who loosely fit under the same label. Some democrat in local politics says guns should be banned - "damnit everyone who is a 'lefty' must feel that way".
I don't think this is because people are stupid, I think it is because they don't spend enough time talking to and meeting people who are different than them. Instead of understanding that people are complex, and have complex beliefs and reasons to uphold their beliefs, they caricaturize regular people with click bait articles, and troll infested comment sections.
This isn't an isolated thing either, everyone regardless of ideology. We spend too much time reading and not enough time actually meeting people we disagree with.

I mean I fully expect them to throw a full on blow out and leave the place soaked in booze and puke, with coke residue everywhere and with turds left in every toilet.

No worries. Uncle Joe knows how to square things up right quick.
“I’ll do my best to give the place a good scrubdown, but I can’t guarantee there won’t be a few ‘souvenirs’ left over from my time in the saddle,” continued Biden, picking out shards of a broken lava lamp from the cushions of a damask settee that was draped in several large beach towels to hide its numerous cigarette burns. “S--t, clock’s a-ticking. I better get a move on.”
According to aides, Biden crammed several embroidered drapes into the 123-year-old home’s washing machine, sprinted into the kitchen, where he dumped an entire bottle of detergent into a sink overflowing with Lenox china, and then left the faucet running as he grabbed a piece of coarse steel wool and turned his attention to buffing out the words “Ratt” and “Crüe,” which had been carved in large letters into the decorative molding of his dining room chair rail.

Haha, sad to report he's one of my best friends. He was NEVER like this, it's so out of left field. He moved to Toronto a year ago and when I talk to him the last few months he just seems different... think the year is getting to him, just not as jokey as he used to be. And we're both pretty chirpy with each other, but lately he's been taking mine all personally, to the point I've made a mental note to stop with that when I talk to him.
Now he's apparently discovered Breitbart News, which he said just cracks him up, but clearly it's gone way beyond that. Just crazy to see someone so laid back and funny and not at all into politics take such a bizarre turn so quickly..sign of where people's mental states are at the past year I guess. Scary stuff man..
