League's best 2019-2020 Powerplay didn't capitalize on 4 chances. I'll be curious to see if they can be PP specialists this year too.

The best part of that goal was that the reigning Hart Trophy winner was slowly gliding backwards at centre ice as it was being scored

I think you're referring to the first goal. This is the 6th goal, the game summary does not have Mcdavid on the ice for this.
Regardless, yes, that was lazy defense. Seems like purely a team of 1-way players.

Staples, with the understatement of the decade(of darkness).

The third and fourth lines, however, combined for just 2 shots on net at even strength, while allowing 2 goals the other way. It seems like Operation Bottom Six remains a work in progress.

McAvi is not the reigning Hart trophy winner.
But I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant, that since McAvi wasn't on the ice Raisaitl, who can totally anchor his own line, probably wasn't on the ice either.

They had one chance to get this right.
One. They missed.
I was thinking yesterday. Imagine if they traded Nugent Hopkins in 2015 for say... Adam Larrson. Traded Hall for more picks and/or a veteran professional in 2015 and just punted in 2015.
I wouldn’t have let McDavid even be on the ice with any of the Lowe/Mactavish radioactive failures.
Leave McDavid to follow and listen to what Ference was trying to teach them. Still sign Lucic.
Draft Barzal Chabot or Connor instead of trading the pick for Reinhart.
You might have a chance of being Chicago and will a cup on the last year of McDavid and Draisatl entry level contracts.
It was never close to these what 5 or 6 key moves to build a real team,
They needed an organizational enema, and instead they fell for the sunk cost effect of how great their high draft picks were”going to be”.
Now they’re in purgatory. Too good to really suck / give up / try to lose AGAIN (or the Score boys will want out) and not good enough to be a real contender.
McDavid and DrySaddle learned all the bad professional/party/defensive habits of the Oil Change era boys.
You get one chance to develop a player. They’re a finished product.
You could put Giordano & Doughty on their backend and the Hart brothers wouldn’t follow their leadership.
It truly is a work of art.

It's effectively pre-season games, which the Oilers are the reigning champs, and they still lost! Only going to get more difficult as goalies and defense get into game shape.

I think they were bad but how can the be good when game 1 ice for their big 3:
McDavid 26:24
Nuge 23:17
Leon 20:59
Why do you play a forward 26+ game 1 when you play again tonight? To play 26 that starts right from the start of the game. Depth got no chance to play
I've said this many times during off season. Oilers depth sucks but they will never get better sitting on the bench. Oilers fans think look we got turris we got jesse back. Look at our depth now. They need to play them and if they fail and McDavid gets 20 mins a game and it costs them a playoff spot at least they know and they get a better pick in draft. But they still haven't learned what it will take to win. They can't just ride 3 forwards from game 1 through the rest of the season and 4 rounds of playoffs. Edmonton is no good

Nope on that 4th goal, Draisaitl dropped his man in the corner to rush to poke the puck for glory, and miffed it, then as the Canuck was moving in on the goal with no one within 10 feet of him, Draisaitl pivoted in the neutral zone and softly drifted, maybe hoping that Koskikojo would make a save and he could be hit for a trophy winning break away.
He dropped his coverage for a shot at a goal and failed.
You know what the greater thing is going to be this year. When the Oilers learn that people aren't lining up to sign with the Oilers to serve the glorious feet of McDavid and Draisaitl when RNH tells them to get stuffed during contract negotiations, and they trade him for pennies on the dollar.

Its funny that Tippett did this on a back to back series, McDavid, Nuge and Draisatl are going to be even more mentally fuzzy.

Oops...my mistake. I got my 2017 & 2020 Hart winners confused. Both equally as bad at backchecking imo....

Theoretically, The early games in the season are where McDavid should really shine, especially this season.
Defensive systems aren’t very practiced and polished. McDavids individual talent should be able to take advantage of that. Teams this year are going to be able to practice defensive systems a lot that shut McAvi and Raisaitl down. It’s not going to get easier fir them as the season goes along.

The realtor running the contest probably has to giveaway houses for people to live in Edmonton too.
