My choice would be Dube with those guys, because all 3 are super cerebral players

You're probably right - this is what they might do. But I don't think it would be the best for offensive development.
Performance-wise, I could see it working.
It is not about what anyone "deserves." It comes down to what makes the best team and promotes the most on-ice success. If the Flames choose to roll lines this year, then young players like Dube and Mangiapane are not going to suffer for a lack of ice time or quality line mates.

Again, I agree, this might be the optimal lineup for performance.

But long term, development is more important than anything.
Hopefully they get to play in a number of roles and have sufficient ice time.

Yeah, I could see that third line getting quite a few minutes if Ward decides to roll the lines.

The NHL is not a development league.

And besides, both Dube and Mangiapane have already shown an ability to be highly effective in a checking role, and they have both already moved up the lineup through their really strong play. I am not remotely concerned about their development moving forward.

Do you think scouts just generally watch there own team?

It has nothing to do with being deserving of top lines minutes, it’s about having a balanced lineup.

Dube and Mangiapane are good enough now to be impactful on their own lines, so it’s more about depth and creating a balanced team that can roll 4 lines.

The one thing that always seems to be common for cup winning teams is they don’t just load up all their best players in the top 6.

What I proposed is just one way to have a lot of valance, another alternative would be.

Tkachuk- Lindholm- Dube
Gaudreau - Monahan - Simon
Mangiapane - Backlund - Bennett
Lucic - Ryan - Leivo
(flip Bennett and Ryan if you wish)

But if you put both of Dube and Mangiapane on those top 6 lines then I think our bottom 6 looks weak.

There were two winners tonight! It's a shame only one side got a trophy!

They're pulling an Oilers, even awarded themselves a trophy for it. Doesn't bode well.

If there was a trophy awarded, there needs to a corresponding banner raising.

Aren’t we technically 2-2 in preseason?

Agree to disagree. Players clearly develop in the NHL (especially at the top end). And development matters even more than winning (and drafting) because it can benefit the team for a number of years and it's something the team has control over.

One you get to a top 6 role, the best way to improve is to play with other quality players. If you want to learn to think quickly, or to improve playmaking, I'd argue you actually need the right line mates to do so.
If you're playing with Tim Jackman, you can't expect a pass to come from nowhere. If you're playing with Adam Oates, you can.

I'm generally against UFA rentals under any circumstances. In generally, the future is always what matters - even if your team is a contender. Because to win a cup, you need several quality kicks at the can (see Washington and St. Louis). Not one extremely good kick at the can.

A lot of good things from last night's scrimmage. Have to give a huge shout out to Monahan. Looks way more engaged and made some really nice subtle plays out there. I expect he and Johnny Hockey to have a big year. Lindholm looked awesome as well. Really driving the play every time he touched the puck. Backlund was surprisingly good everywhere. He's normally a bit of a slow starter, but he looked good in both ends of the ice.

On the wings the standouts were Mangipane and Dube. Both look ready to make a big impression this season. Dube looked like he was trying to force a few things, but you have love the motor and willingness to play whatever role, on whichever team, his coach asked of him. I thought Simon was surprisingly good. Really complimented Monahan and Gaudreau. Nordstrom looked good as did Leivo. Based on this viewing I fully expect the lines to shake out like this.

Gaudreau- Monahan - Simon
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Dube
Mangiapane - Backlund - Leivo
Lucic - Bennett - Nordstrom

The goaltenders were interesting. Markstrom was pretty underwhelming. Rittich looked good and made a couple of saves. Dominigue in relief was surprisingly good and provides some comfort knowing they have a third goaltender that can step in if pressed.

Lets get this second COVID Cup chase going!
