That, and the political objectives of The Squad aren't even extremist positions by any reasonable standard: universal single-payer healthcare, affordable post-secondary education, protection of the environment. Those are mainstream policies -- even among many conservative parties -- in every other industrialized nation except the United States.

Well, that and the fact that the "far" left you're talking about would be centrists in most Western democracies. The fact that their fairly moderate policies by the standards of most industrialized nations are what someone would bring up as a counterpoint to Qanon type craziness says a lot about the state of the right and the left in the US today.

Ooh Ooh don’t leave out the “far” left not being an organized movement that includes specific, named domestic terrorists who try to achieve goals via violence and intimidation.
But other than that yup, two sides of the same coin really.

Like bombing US government buildings in protest to a war? It's a crazy time for right wing politics but lets not try and pretend that it hasn't gone the other way before.

What does the Grandma say there?
Thank you Mr Trump for inviting a riot at the white house?
Is she saying that sincerely or blaming him?

I feel like she was going for “inciting”, blame.

Really historically there has been violence? You don’t say? Interesting I was unaware of that. Or I was directly addressing exactly what he said about the far left and far right today. On the right you have actual nazis, proud boys, oath keepers, etc all with public leaders and faces who often use extreme violence and intimidation to try and achieve their goals. They killed a lady in Charleston just in the last couple years. Ran her over with a car whilst trying to drive through a protest.
On the left you have...huh. Nothing. Weird. Oh right there’s the spooky spectre of antifa and trying to tie a nonspecific leaderless movement to the left. Do you see the difference?

Did mainstream Democratic politicians court the Weather Underground and their ilk in the '60s and '70s? Did LBJ egg on violent protesters? Do you think that nearly half of Democrats back then would've said they supported a leftist mob storming the Capitol when Nixon's EC votes were being counted like Republicans did in a poll?

I've heard it speculated that it's a standard procedure to arrest someone under the charges that you know are going to be really straightforward and investigate and make stick (ie. 'entering a restricted area'), and then worry about the more motive-based crimes (like sedition), or those that have some complex legal issues (felony murder) later.

makes sense. I'd want to make sure I have them on the slam dunk charges first, and not one with any chance they'd get off.
Derrick Evans for example, is probably crapping himself a bit right now, thinking about losing his cushy job and getting a criminal record, and possibly jail.
I love the fact so many of these idiots made it easy by posting about it.

I mean, a Right-Left Extremism thread could have legs.
On topic:
https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/...n-capitol.html
Quote:
Security video obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive under a public records request clearly shows Rep. Mike Nearman, a Republican from Independence, open a door to the Capitol during a Dec. 21 special legislative session, allowing raucous demonstrators who were protesting immediately outside the door to illegally enter the building.

I spent most of my week training new end users, so I missed a lot of the events as they happened and took today to catch up on the thread. I gotta say I am not surprised by what we saw. I am thankful that it didn't get worse. The things I see and hear on a regular basis in red America have had me worried for some time. People continue to be dismissive, but there is a plain fundamental divide in how 2 groups of Americans see this country.
As an atheist, I have been reflecting a lot on the bible passage from romans 8:31 "If God be for us, who can be against us?" (preface - this is NOT an all sides, many sides defense) Both ends of the spectrum believe they are right. Both believe they have god and liberty and freedom on their side. And at this point most see the other side as an actual enemy. I am just not sure how we move past this divide. It is so very fundamental at this point. I often wonder if we just need something similar to the partition of British India.

I'd probably go with something way less bloody, maybe Yugoslavia than the horror of India in 1947
