personally i don't get the outrage. these are two private citizens who made a decision to go away. They don't and should not need Nenshi's blessing to go someplace.
I am pretty sure that would easily win a lawsuit if they were fired for travelling outside the country.
i see the rules for elected officials being different as you are appointed by the people. if you are making lockdown decisions, and out on social media telling folks to stay at home, then you have better stay at home regardless of how many years in a row your family went to a tropical destination......
this is cancel culture run amok.

Ugh, an admin assistant is not news worthy in this case. C'mon I can't stand Nenshi, but no way he should have to answer for how city employees spent their holidays. As many above have posted, elected officials, and those who make the "rules" should be held to a higher standard then city staffers

I apologize. I couldn't remember what it was called. If the mods want to combine this one with that one, I probably wouldn't be the only one to appreciate that.

The YYCCC thread specifies two people, and should renamed as the general yyc politics thread.

Yeah, I don’t know why anyone would think the Chu and Farkas thread was the right place to post a story about Nenshi.
But really, all of the [XX] politics threads here are just places for people who hate the current government of XX to go to rant with like-minded posters. It would confuse the heck out of people to see posts and tweets dunking on Nenshi in the same thread as posts and tweets dunking on Farkas. So maybe keeping them split is keeping with the spirit of CP.

I think this is a case of where the admin assistant had the bad luck of going to Hawaii at the same time as bigger targets and therefore got caught up incidentally in the story.

lol and Farkas couldn't help but grandstand by saying the staffer won't be paid for the 14 day quarantine period... which not only isn't city policy (guess what, the staffer would already be working from home) but there is no 14 day quarantine period because of the rapid testing pilot.

City of Calgary employee policy is that you still need to serve your 14-day quarantine period in full, regardless of the rapid testing pilot. The staffer may be working from home, but wouldn't be allowed to go into the office until 14 days had passed.

Is that true? Nenshi seemed to say differently on the Eyeopener this morning
(sidenote: that interview did not go particularly well for Nenshi)

Think you really have to listen it TBQH, but Rob Brown held his feet to the fire and he got defensive, especially on the matter of whether employers can actually approve/disapprove where employees go for vacation. It felt a bit like trying to get out on a technicality when he said it better the other day, i.e. that he was aware and he should have pushed them more strongly to reconsider.
Then Rob implied his response (not punishing his staff) might have been different if he was running again in the fall to which Nenshi objected (rightly, I think) but it still wasn't pretty.
I still give him points for showing up though (and Rob Brown made a point of doing the same), so if you compare Nenshi's response to the very low bar of Kenney's... well, it's not really even worth comparing IMO.

Finally someone brave enough to take on the cyclists. Farkas is a shoe in for mayor, Nenshi need not apply.

Chu has put in his papers for the next election. Is anyone aware of decent competitors to him in Ward 4?

If that is the hill anyone is dying on amongst everything happening to the city - cyclists as the problem and fighting them as the solution - Calgary is truly in trouble.

My concern with Farkas is that he's probably fine as a 1 term mayor, but it's extremely difficult to defeat incumbents, particularly in municipal politics and I can't stomach a decade of him
