Even with a cheat code the Oilers can't make the playoffs.
Edmonton is no good.

I have seen Oilerz fans mulling over protection lists for expansion, coming up with the following as most likely...
Defense:
Nurse
Bear
Klefbom
Forward:
McDavid
Draisaitl
Nugent-Hopkins
Yamamoto
Puljujarvi
Benson
Turris/Kahun
We spend a lot of time here stressing about who the Flames will lose in expansion for not having enough protection-slots open. Just imagine how depressing it would be to have Tyler Benson on the Flames list with one more open spot. That would be like protecting Glenn Gawdin.
The Oilers are hilariously bad.

I think Seattle is going to use the pre FA period at the expansion draft and sign one of RNH, Larrson, or Barrie. Might as well get an NHLer instead of wasting the ink to write down a name that is the same calibre as Griffin Reinhart.

The Oilers could volunteer to protect Neal, and it literally wouldn't affect them at all.

If that’s their list, then goodbye Caleb Jones...to keep Pulju,Benson, and Turris.

Looks like Kahun is in line to get the 2019 Neal points and the 2018 Chiasson points while Neal and Chiasson get nearly zip.
Does that really make them better? Neal was essentially a 20 goal scorer who now looks to be shunned by the team. Will Kahun match his production? Neal had more points last year.

Word I have heard is that they'll pick the option that allows them to protect more defensemen because their forwards are awful outside of three guys.

That is obviously a much better option for them, but only because they have so few NHL quality forwards, not because Jones is such a great defenseman.

No matter who they pick, the player will be so grateful that I predict a huge jump in play.

Bringing in another marginal forward.
Because...yeah, that was their weakness. Their one and only Achilles' Heel....

RNH to Seattle is interesting. After trading Hall one for one and Yakupov in the KHL, having another 1st overall lost, this time to expansion, would be hilarious.

I’d rather they extend RNH at a complete overpay and screw up their cap forever.

So the Oilers need McDavid & Draisaitl to stay healthy, have years like season, as well as an insane PP% again on top of improvements in other areas.
It could happen, sure. But that's a lot to just assume will happen again this season, like it's an automatic given. Because if it's not, they could be in deep trouble.

Nothing really indicates that they won't continue to be a poor 5 on 5 team that has to make up for getting beat at even strength with PP goals from or through their two stars. The awesome recipe for success that has garnered them so much success to date.
If Koskinen plays below average (~.910) they probably won't be able to outscore their problems. We know Smith is already a lock to do that.

I think their goaltending is gonna be especially brutal this year. McDrai will need to score at least 5 goals/game just to have a chance, and they'll need to be gifted a s*** ton of PPs by the refs.

I think only 6 opponents hurts them too...teams will be prepared for their 2 player attack

I think it would be funny if Seattle did the same with Hall. Get the whole crew back together!
