It's note solely their responsibility, but somebody has to be the adult in the room, you know, for the sake of governing the entire ####ing nation. The work needs to be done.

What would granting statehood to DC mean? Easier to call in national guard?

They would have their own guard plus they would have representation in Congress which would almost certainly be Democratic.

edit- Same with Puerto Rico and maybe Guam.

Grant statehood to Puerto Rico while they're at it.

Isn't this a bit of a misrepresented issue on the left? I thought PR didn't overwhelming want statehood because they have a sweet spot with American protection and no federal tax right now?

I could be very wrong though

The past referendums had a majority voting for statehood. It is shrinking though with more and more people actually becoming in favour of decolonization (they are technically still a colony) and independence.

There are political motives for Democrats to want DC and Puerto Rico to become states, but keep in mind that Republicans pushed for Hawaii to become a state for the same reason. It was seen a sure thing for the Republicans to get guaranteed reps, but fast forward to today, and it backfired.

My understanding is that statehood requires a clear desire from the citizens of the proposed state to become a state -- which there is in both DC and PR -- plus simple majority votes in both houses of congress followed by approval from the President.

With the Dems now having control of both houses and the White House, both could be pushed through if all votes were along straight party lines.

I don't know if all Democrat Senators would necessarily vote in favour of statehood for either or both.

PR isn't a guaranteed Democrat stronghold, but DC is. Adding 4 new senators would almost certainly break the tie and give the Dems a little breathing room.

DC would be such a weird state. Lots of people work there, but almost no one lives there. You could easily see the whole state in a day. Almost all of the land is federally owned. It's good strategically for the democrats, but it's pretty hard to justify it being a state.

If there was only a resource where you could look that information up and find out how very wrong on all accounts you are?

Yet everyone that does live there pays taxes, but has no representation. They should be a state.

I think it’s weirder that it’s not already a state, personally.
