This expansion sucks cause we are going to lose someone we don’t want to unless Tre makes a move to protect the guys we want.
That didn’t work out for a lot of teams last expansion so it’s risky.
In a perfect world we could protect all of:
Gaudreau
Monahan
Tkachuk
Lindholm
Dube
Mangiapane
Bennett
Backlund
Andersson
Hanifin
Gio
Kylington
Markstrom
As bad as it is to think, it’s somewhat lucky Valimaki didn’t play last year or else we would have even larger problems.

Trade Backlund for a young RW that is exempt = Expansion, cap, salary and positional problems solved.
It's ok to let go, people. Sometimes you have to let logic win.

Logic tells you not to trade your second line center until someone has shown they can take his place permanently. That hasn't been shown yet.

Keeping the AHL guys in the mix makes no sense. The Flames should have a 26 man go to war group focused on getting out of the gate as best as possible.

I think ricardodw's point was valid, and an argument can most certainly be made that with only a week to go before the season starts, getting the team together and focused is a pretty reasonable strategy.
Maybe you could offer something useful as a response, as opposed to just attacking other posters?

I guess it depends on what the longterm game is. Colorado traded both O'Reilly and Duchene, who was arguably their first line centres at their primes. Of course, Mackinnon beasting at the right time is probably the biggest reason for the Av's turnaround. But even then, they had to suck a few more years to restock their cupboards, and that, combined with some savvy moves by Sakic, they're up to their eyeballs in young talent.

Lindholm could easily do it. Monahan-Lindholm as 1-2 is fine by me and was the Flames center core for a good chunk of last year during the failed Backlund wing experiment

Pretty funny how you state you need to let logic win and throw out a completely illogical solution.
What team is trading a player drafted in 2017 or later with less than 25 pro games and has the 5.3M in cap space to take on Backlund (don’t forget the NTC)?

I think he can to, but it hasn't been tested yet. That's my point. It's pre mature to trade Backlund right now because we think we have his replacement.

Do we know if Zary and Pelletier will go to camp now, or back to their teams?

They're both coming to camp.

Rooting for Pelletier to come in and steal a spot.
More so than I normally would given that Junior hockey isn't going on.

As much as I enjoy seeing our prospects succeed and make the NHL I am very surprised to see so many wanting to shoehorn pelletier into the line up that fast. He had a good showing in a tournament vs some other quality prospects but we have nhl bodies and some other prospects who have been seasoned and are more physically matured. It would be good to see what he have with these older prospects. Pelletier could turn out to be a decent NHLer but I wouldn't want to rush his development unnecessarily. We arent so desperate for talented depth like the clowns up north that we throw our prospects to the wolves asap

I disagree. Lindholm played a good chunk of the season as a center and was successful. He also played center a bunch in Carolina and he was always good for 0.5ppg.
Having said that I don’t see the team trading Backs. Depending how the season goes he may be exposed in expansion but that is the only way I see him leaving the team. The organization absolutely loves him and he loves it here. One of the best guys in the community. Treliving spoke how he would take a bunch of the leftover food to the homeless shelter on his way home from the game. He is a class act and the type of player this organization covers for his skills and character

[I didn't quote the originator, as he is on my ignore list]
If that makes sense, it would make sense for the other 30 teams. As far as I know, all teams are carrying 30+ players this early in camp. It makes sense to have 2 reasonably full teams to scrimmage.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

They don't have teams to go back to. None of the junior leagues are playing right now, so Zary, Pelletier, and Wolf will all be coming to camp. Zary and Wolf will also likely start the season in Stockton until the WHL gets going (the Q is supposed to resume later this month, so Pelletier will likely go there if he doesn't steal a spot out of camp).

Precisely,
There's a couple other threads where fans are adamant that a (arguably) 4th line winger be protected over (arguably) Calgary's most important centre. The contract and age factors has quite a few posters openly hoping for Sam's progression and Mikael's regression.
Mikael Backlund will likely be the next Captain and will probably still be a Flame when Bennett, Gaudreau and Monahan are long gone.
I still think Sam Bennett gets his wish and gets a chance to be a top six forward on another team.

There is no universe where Backlund gets the next Captain unless Tkachuk is also gone, which he won't be.
