Baltimore is a half hour up the road, surely they take a lot of people.

Shouldn’t the police be dispersing the crowd by moving them into a confined area and arresting them then and there?

True - but some protests involve a million ? people or more. It boggles my mind how this many people can be accommodated.

This isn’t a coup. It’s a deranged narcissist unleashing his moronic social media followers to cause mayhem.
Far be it from me to correct CliffFletcher, but a coup is not limited to the military. Coups are defined as "a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics." There have been many coups that did not include the military. Unsually the only time the military gets involved is if a high ranking member of the military is the one who desires power.

This could easily be argued it was a coup, but I think it fails an important test. The problem is they did not occupy and maintain an office of power. The only thing this did was probably put the finishing touches on the Trump ####show of a presidency. Had they attempted to take political prisoners or control over a body of governance, then this would have been a straight up coup. But like their sociopathic leader, these morons didn't think this through and have a plan or end game. This is a display of lunacy is just a bunch of mouth breathers displaying their faux rage over change in America and them not being from the majority demographic any longer.

At the very least, if the police felt afraid and helpless, they could have backed down and the terrorists could have opened it themselves. The officers actually physically helped them break the law. That is above and beyond.

It's no different than when mass looting happens. Sometimes the police have no choice but to stand back and observe. But you don't see them go and hold the doors open for them.
How do you know they were working? This apparently unfolded as the crowd grew, forcing it's way closer and closer. There are many reports that they were using pepper spray on the police to gain access to restricted doors. This obviously forced authorities to focus on protecting the people inside the building versus trying in vain to hold off a mob from many access points.

Looting is in no way the same as thousands of people pushing in on you trying to force their way inside a building. They were not properly prepared, but why make the police an accomplice to this? It's beyond petty in this case.

In this case living in a trailer has its advantages.

Not everyone will need to be accommodated. Many travelled for just the day. The surrounding states will absorb a lot, plus, from what I was reading of screenshots from Parler (on twitter), many planned to camp, whether that was in campgrounds or just setting up any old place.

I have a friend in VA that works in DC, as does her husband. She said (years ago) that most of the people who work in DC don't live there, everyone commutes from the closest states.

Right but when you can get to DC in less time than it takes to go from Calgary to Red Deer or Edmonton you could easily protest for the day and head home. If these people are traveling from farther away they could easily stay in Baltimore, Richmond or anywhere in between. It's a weird area where they have lots of towns that aren't really towns. More like satellite suburbs.

that's a little hard to do when the police are literally outnumbered. You want a peaceful outcome, so disperse the crowd peacefully and identify the leaders and key individuals later. Arresting them on the spot might provoke the mob.

Not to mention where they would hold the sheer number of the arrested.

I'm not smart on US law and due process. bu the 25th ammendment is written around the death of a president or his resignation from office. Not for the removal of a sitting President. As well the mechanism looks like there's a vote, there's a set of due processes for the removal, and there's a 21 day requirement for response. But I could be totally wrong, but I don't think it really applies here, and would take longer then the inauguration of Biden.

The East Coast also has Amtrak so you can get from New York to DC in three hours.

It will be EZ to track and arrest people once they've had their microchips injected.
